happycanadian2 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 this lady has gone through some hard times the past few years, but starting in may of 2004, she entered a drug rehabilitation program and is now completely clean. she's presently recording a new album that is sure to be her big comeback. anyway, here is a little bio -- not that she really needs one. Okay, so we've all obviously heard of Ms. Whitney. It probably isn't even necessary to do up a profile, but in the spirit of doing things properly, here goes: Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9th, 1963. Her mother, Cissy Houston was a renowned gospel singer and sang backup for Aretha Franklin. Whitney's cousin is Dionne Warwick, so there was music born into her blood. Clive Davis is the man responsible for the discovery and success of artists like Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, and Santana. When he heard Whitney sing at a nightclub, he immediately approached her with the offer of a music contract. However, Whitney was still in High School, and so she declined. He told her he would wait. In 1984, he brought a then unheard of Whitney on live television, on the Merv Griffin show where she sang "Home". People in the audience were moved to tears by her unequalled vocals. Never had people heard a soul singer with such a clear and powerful voice. She would open the doors for artists such as Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton, and set the standard for the now famous "Power Ballad", which we can all watch many attempt each week on American Idol. Here are some records she has broken: She is the third best selling female globally of all time, after Madonna (2nd) and Nana Mouskouri (1st); with Worldwide album sales of 119,500,000 copies, and worldwide singles sales of 49,645,000. She is the ONLY person EVER to have 7 consecutive number 1 singles. That's more that Elvis, The Beatles, or anyone else. She has won 21 American Music Awards - more than any other solo artist. Her debut album, "Whitney Houston" was the first album by a female to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard chart. Also, it was the best selling debut album of all time, until Alanis Morrisette's "Jagged Little Pill". ---However, Alanis' album is considered 'debut' on a world scale, even though she released an earlier album here in North America. The soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" is the best selling soundtrack of all time, thanks to the incomparable success of "I Will Always Love You". ALL THIS AND SHE'S HOT AS WELL!!! (she started her career as a model) pics: these pics are from this year's World Music Awards at the end of September. Whitney performed a tribute to Clive Davis and sang her songs "I Believe in You and Me" and "I Will Always Love You" and absolutely stole the show. and here is the video of whitney's performance, and then a collage of the extremely positive coverage by Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, and Extra. Note Celine Dion and Courtney Love watching backstage. performance: http://www.whitney-fan.com/media/live00s/0...y.wma.clive.ram coverage: http://www.whitney-fan.com/media/news/0409...t.extra.wma.ram Quote
