PART 2

She does not fit into the pattern that models like to be put in [by society] these days. Mostly they are presented as independent, famished creatures. Women like Toni Garrn show how one-dimensional this image is. The starved beauty was a symbol for this centuries first years. Brands and designers took the place of the self-confident supermodels. Fashion designers celebrated themselves as stars, the models only being part of the staging. No personality was supposed to deflect somebodies attention from the clothes, no face should shine over the outfits. Accordingly, models became thinner - they almost disappeared in the clothes they were presenting.

Meanwhile, super-egos aren't suitable for brand-images any longer. Fashion must move closer to the audience. Characters that oneself can identify with are in demand - no artificial bodies. And after the fashion shows have been dominated by East Europeans for a long time, now the nordic blonde beauties are coming back. One is longing for the classical. This decade is made for Toni Garrn.

Of course she met colleagues of whom she thought "they will break down in an instant". But as a model, she says, you need a healthy face. One couldn't do a beauty shooting with eye circles and shrunken cheeks. She has never been thicker than now, she says.

The modeling world, this place of vanity and competition - should a young girl be send out there? Toni Garrns mother Anja Garrn asked this question once herself, when Toni wanted to go to her first fashion shooting. " In the beginning I was worried of course. But Toni has always been very independent and if she has something in mind she wants to do, she will."

In the beginning Toni had to call her mother at least once a day when she was working in front of the camera. Until recently there has always been someone from the agency along with her. And of course, there is a settlement every customer must sign when booking Toni Garrn: no nudity, no fur, no cigarettes. As time drew on, the mothers confidence and trust in her daughter grew. Meanwhile, Anja Garrn has given up her work as a wholesaler and is now her child's manager. While other mothers of 17-year-olds make sure their children come home not too late, she is dealing with contracts.

"Actually you're my employee" Toni wisecracks, receiving a sad smile from her mother. Somehow she's got it all in her tenuous hands. Even those who should actually bring her up. The modeling business made her an adult. She's making her Abitur one year earlier than usual, she has always been the youngest in her class anyway. "It was weird in the beginning. I returned from a job in New York full with adults and all of a sudden I was among peers again."

Only sometimes when she's telling a story one realizes how youngs she still is. For example when explaining what she likes about Karl Lagerfeld. "His studio is full of books, no white walls - real books, no Reclam-booklets!"

There it's coming out, a student's world of a girl. Learning her German lessons in little yellow booklets when flying over the Atlantic Ocean.

In a few weeks she will do her Abitur tests. Intensive course German. Intensive course English. She has to cope with discussions about topics such as "education" and William Shakespeare. To prepare for tests she's taking a time out for only one week in February. One week without any jobs, she says.

This is the world of Toni Garrn. Everything is planned. Even the final tests at school, which represent the gate for being a grown-up for most of the other students, is an appointment with a defined time window.

Is she beautiful? She doesn't know. "There are many views of beauty" she says. She seems to correspond the current catwalk and photoshooting ideal - the beauty of 180cm tall girls with long legs and blonde thatches. "I don't think the boys at my school think I'm hot, though." The beauty that boys want would be big-breasted and tasty-assy and painted.

Back in the days, at the age of 14, she would put make-up on as well. Today not anymore. "Hardly anyone in the modeling industry puts any make-up on." Toni Garrn sees herself as a serious worker. She's providing her body to the fashion designers and her face to the cosmetics industry. For her, beauty is a service. When work is over, she doesn't need to be pretty.

How far shall her career go? For the agency's head it is not a question whether Toni will become an icon or not, but the way this is going to happen: "Can she live with every detail of her private life being dragged into public? Those are the issues we're talking about."

Toni Garrn is looking at the man who is talking about her being a super star in the near future, and seems to be as unemotianal as if he was her tax accountant. Either she really got accustomed to the superlatives that blow over her, or she doesn't care about them. Those were all things that would be later important in her life, not now, she says.

Soon she will move to New York. Maybe that will be the end of Toni, the girl, leaving only Toni garrn, the model, left. Possibly she might quit modeling one day from one second to the other. Ted Linow is not making himself any illusions: "If Toni wants to become a trapeze artist, she's just going to do it - even if she had to leave everybody sad behind."

Shortly before she leaves she tells us what she would like to do once she turned 18. Going to the casino: "I'm a good poker player. People use to underestimate me."

I believe her runway time is over ?

No, it can't ... She looks good in print and has a good portfolio. Maybe she's too busy at school ? Or maybe, she'll do VS and stopped to do runway ?

Well, Women had done a great job with Toni :fun:
