One of her first acting projects was a television series for local cable Chicago Force. In 1989, Berry landed the role in the short-lived ABC television series Living Dolls (a spin-off of Who's the Boss?).

Her breakthrough feature film role was in Jungle Fever. Her first co-starring role was in the 1991 film Strictly Business. In 1992, Berry starred in Boomerang. That same year, she caught the public's attention in the TV adaptation of Queen: The Story of an American Family. Berry was in the live-action Flintstones movie.

With Losing Isaiah (1995), Berry tackled a more serious role. She played in Race the Sun (1996), and in Executive Decision. In 1998, Berry received praise for her role in Bulworth. The same year, she played the singer Zola Taylor, one of the three wives of pop singer Frankie Lymon, in the biopic Why Do Fools Fall in Love. In the 1999 HBO biopic Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, she portrayed the first black woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award. Berry's performance was recognized with several awards, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Berry portrayed the mutant superhero Storm in the film adaptation of the comic book series X-Men (2000) and its sequels, X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). In 2001, Berry appeared in the film Swordfish, which featured her first on-screen nude scene.

In 2001, Berry appeared in Monster's Ball. Her performance was awarded the National Board of Review and the Screen Actors Guild prizes, and earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Berry made history by becoming the first African-American woman to receive a Best Actress Academy Award.

As Bond girl Jinx in the 2002 blockbuster Die Another Day, Berry famously recreated a scene from Dr. No, as Ursula Andress had 40 years earlier. In late 2003, she starred in the psychological thriller Gothika. It was a moderate hit at the United States box office, taking in $60 million; it earned another $80 million abroad.

Berry receive $12.5 million for the title role in the film Catwoman, a $100 million movie, it grossed $17 million on its first weekend. She was awarded a "worst actress" Razzie award in 2005.

Berry next appeared in the Oprah Winfrey-produced ABC TV movie Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005). Meanwhile, she voiced the character of Cappy, one of the many mechanical beings in the animated feature Robots (2005). She starred in the thriller Perfect Stranger and wrapped shooting on Things We Lost in the Fire. She is set to star in Class Act and Tulia.

Liu began acting in 1989, after auditioning for a role in the University of Michigan's production of Alice in Wonderland during her senior year. Liu had small roles in films and TV (including the "Hell Money" episode of The X-Files and "The March to Freedom" episode on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) before landing a role on Ally McBeal. It earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Liu cemented her reputation playing bad girls by portraying "Pearl" the sadistic dominatrix/hit woman for the Chinese mafia in the film Payback (1999).

Liu became better known with her turn as Alex Munday in the Charlie's Angels film. The film opened in November 2000 and was a hit, earning more than $125 million in the U.S., and a worldwide total of more than $264 million. The sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, opened in June 2003 and was a box-office hit again, earning more than $100 million in the U.S., and a worldwide total of more than $259 million. In between the two films, Liu starred in Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a critical and box office failure.

Liu next played O-Ren Ishii, one of the major villains in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film, Kill Bill. She won an MTV Movie Award for "Best Movie Villain" for the part. Liu appeared on several episodes of Joey with Matt LeBlanc. She also had smaller roles in the film Chicago and in the thriller Domino. In 2006, she played leading lady in the crime thriller Lucky Number Slevin. Other appearances include a cameo on the animated show Futurama and recently, The Simpsons.

Her film 3 Needles was released on December 1, 2006. Liu's other recent roles include Code Name: The Cleaner, an action comedy released January 5, 2007, Rise, a supernatural thriller, Watching the Detectives, an independent romantic comedy, and Kung Fu Panda, an animated film in which she voiced Viper. Liu has also signed on to star in Beautiful Asian Brides and a new version of Charlie Chan which has been in pre-production since 2000; she will produce both films.

Liu has guest starred as lawyer Grace Chin on Ugly Betty episode 16 "Derailed" and episode 17 "Icing on the Cake". She stars in the Sex and the City inspired TV show, Cashmere Mafia on ABC.
