ToniGarrnMania Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 EXCLUSIVE: Catbird's Leigh Plessner And Model Constance Jablonski Spill Their Jewelry-Stacking Secrets, Favorite Fall Manicures And More! Ask any Lucky editor about her favorite source for truly special jewelry, and it's virtually guaranteed that she'll namecheck Brooklyn shop Catbird. Located on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, it's quite literally a jewel box of a boutique, a tiny store packed with even tinier treasures, from those signature gold stacking rings to dainty personalized necklaces to cute cards and even unique beauty buys. Catbird has amassed a growing fan base over the past decade; everyone from fashion insiders to NYC locals to well-accessorized tourists to celebrities have been known to stop in for a sparkle fix. Amongst the many famous faces you might spot in the store on any given day? French mega-model and Estée Lauder face Constance Jablonski, who's been a brand fan for years. She recently stopped by the shop to chat all things jewelry-related with Catbird's general manager and buyer Leigh Plessner—and The Estée Edit was there to capture it all. What's the first really special piece of jewelry you ever owned? The first piece of jewelry I ever received as a present was my baptism chain but I lost it when I was six years old on the playground, and I remember my mum being really upset. The first piece I ever cherished was a matching friendship bracelet that I bought with my best friend when I was 10 years old at a cheap jewelry market. It said "amies pour la vie," which means "friends for life" in French. We are still friends today! Tell me a bit about your current "stack du jour"—the jewelry you're wearing day to day and never taking off. What makes these pieces so special? I wear the same necklace every day, a very thin and tiny flat diamond, which I only take it off when a stylist asks me to do so for a photo shoot. I always have one starfish on one ear and the same rings on—little rubies I received from my brother, and an open arrow ring. This summer I lost two tiny golden rings that I had forever while wakeboarding in Mykonos and I was so upset with myself for not taking them off! When did you first start wearing small, stackable jewelry, and what do you think makes this type of jewelry so appealing? I started wearing small stackable jewelry when I first arrived in New York. I’ve been obsessed ever since. I think the great thing about small jewelry is that you can wear a lot of it and it's never too much, it's not too 'in your face'…it's delicate. Each of my pieces has its own story or has been given to me by someone special. Tell me how you first discovered (and fell in love with) Catbird! I first discovered Catbird two years ago while walking around Williamsburg. I live in Manhattan and I don't go to Brooklyn often, so Catbird became THE reason to cross the bridge! When it comes to jewelry, would you argue that less is more or that MORE is more? When it comes to jewelry, less is more! I like subtle, not obvious things. Subtlety is more mysterious and mystery is exciting! To me, it's not about the size of the diamond; it's about the design of it. I appreciate any kind of jewelry, whether it is inexpensive and casual or intricate and expensive. As long as I love the piece I will wear it regardless of its value. Do you have any hard and fast rules about mixing and matching your jewelry? Yes—in fact, I think every woman has rules about wearing jewelry. I am not a big fan of mixing silver and gold; for me, it's always one or the other. If I wear silver one night, all my golden rings are going back in their boxes for a few hours. If you had to pick just one type of jewelry, which would it be: earrings, bracelets, necklaces or rings? Necklaces! I'm not sure why, but if I’m not wearing earrings, bracelets or rings I'm fine, but without my necklaces, I feel naked! What's your single most prized piece of jewelry? My most prized piece of jewelry is a Rolex watch, which is odd since I don't wear a watch very often. I really love and appreciate horology and find the movement and calibration of time in a watch quite fascinating. What's your fall manicure color of choice? I love to switch up my manicure! In fall, I like darker colors, such as dark blues, greens and reds. My latest obsession is the Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Black Plum. Are there certain polish shades you feel fit certain types of jewelry—metals, stones, shapes—better than others? I think any gorgeous colorful shade can fit with jewelry, but I do love a deep red nail with gold jewelry pieces. They really complement each other. luckymag.com Such a natural beauty. Quote
