Magdalena is on the new cover of "Pani"! Didn't buy the magazine today, will tomorrow, so I can scan the pics then. Unless, you know, probably sb from tfs is faster and you want to repost from there :p I flipped through the magazine and I am pretty sure there was an interview with her (or Magda talking baout things, whatever) which I could translate, unless, of course... tfs. Also, in some of these pics her rings where branded as 'Magdalena Frackowiak jewelry', so does it mean she has a line of jewelry now? Never heard of it before, or maybe they meant that the rings she wore were hers... although that would sound strange.

Can't wait to see them Layla!

Old, but GORRRGEOUS editorial! Does anyone know if in the first pic, the middle shot with the flower in it, is an individual image?

Yep, I do know some of these are upside down-I turned them but when I uploaded the photos they were just upside down again  also, the photos were in kind of white 'frames' but I cropped them... not the best scans but I did my best! Haven't scanned anything in such a long time

First part of the interview y'all! There's also one more picture accompanying this interview and I can scan the pages with the interview and some pics of her work attached, if you want to polish your Polish :p

Two and a half year ago we met in a charming cafe Doma in West Village, snobistic district of New York, during the time of Magda's previous PANI photoshoot. The place looked fairly simple, but they say you can may meet Sarah Jessica Parker there, who bought an apartment nearby. At that time Magda was renting a small studio nearby, she would drop in to Doma for croissant and latte. We met in the morning. In the evening she was going to the Metropolitan Opera, the previous day she came back from Mexico and the next one she was going to Paris. She drew attention in Doma. Incredibly slim, exquisitly dressed. She seemed like a strong, aware of her worth girl who's conquering the world. A few months later I got to know she came back to Poland. Magda, in a long black dress on straps looks very feminine.

PANI: When we met you said you seldom come to Poland.

Magdalena Frackowiak: I met Wojtek, fell in love and decided to move to Warsaw. It was a spontaneous decision, I didn't analyze all 'for' and 'against' I wasn't wondering what's gonna happen in the future. We moved in together very fast and even though many people were surprised, I thought there's no reason to wait. I think it's better to take a risk not to regret later that you could have done something but didn't. Waste of time. Earlier, I was in a few relationships which are typical for New York. Everyone has its own apartment things to do and we meet when we both feel like it. Since the beginning I knew such relationships cannot survive.

PANI: You lived in New York for 5 years.

Magdalena Frąckowiak: The first 2, 3 years were wonderful. It's an incredible city, full of energy. But at some point the speed of life made me tired, the all-embracing chaos. Also, my job is very unpredictable, there's a lot of things happening. Sometimes I say that a year in modelling is like 5 years of normal life. This is why it is so important to have a stable private life. Solid basis which you can lean on. Wojtek came into my life when I missed stabilization. When I packed all my things on a ship, I was absolutely certain that I won't come back to the USA.

PANI: Didn't you fear about your career? They say new York is the best place for a model.

Magdalena Frackowiak: Somewhere in the back of my head I had various questions. My New York agency wasn't happy with my decision. On the other hand though, I haven't been to any casting in 3 years. If somebody wants to work with me, calls my agency and I get a job for 'direct booking'. When I lived in NY, I often flew to Paris or Milan. Now, from Warsaw, I have it closer, but I have flights to New York-all in all, I spend nearly the same amount of time in airplanes. Maybe even more lately, as in the last 2 years my career skyrocketed. I had many covers for prestigeous magazines and was a part of new campaigns-the last one being for the famous brand Prada which strengthten my position. I think my success has a lot to do with a good mood. I quickly felt at home in Warsaw. I am happy and fulfilled. Here Wojtek and I have places which we like to go to, for example Kultura cinema and Zachęta [that's an art gallery if you're interested-edited by Layla90 :p ) and in the evenings, we like to meet with friends in Beirut [humus and music bar, this time info provided by google :ninja: lol]

PANI: When we were looking at pictures from the photoshoot in our editorial office, we were all stunned. Each of the pictures was incredible.

Magdalena: Thank you very much. Now I can say, I reached the top. I can be feminine, subtle, sexy, sensual, spicy, mannish. I can play everything I know my assets, I know how to pose in front of the camera. Sometimes, when I do make-up, I use tricks which I observed from make-up artists. I think I could even take photographs of myself (laugh). It's the effect of working 10 years in this profession.

The rest of the interview later, unless sb else is faster and provides the rest of the interview :p

The rest of the interview y'all!

PANI: A lot of models are girls from modest households. Their stories are modern Cinderella stories. It shouldn’t be surprising that girls dream about this job.

Magdalena: My home was modest as well, I was raised in Gdansk in ‘falowiec’ (a huge skyscraper which has a shape reminding of a wavy block) in a small flat. I was also dreaming about an interesting life, travels, learnt foreign languages. I didn’t want to be a model though, I wanted to be an architect. When I was 16, my mum sent a photo of me for some competition. I won it, got accepted to the modeling agency but I rarely ever had any photoshoots or runway shows. I passed the international high school finals and I went to the south of France, started studying. Unfortunately, changes in my private life thwarted my plans. I decided to go to New York and will try modeling, save some money and come back to studying. Now I am surprised with myself that I was so courageous But then I thought: “if I won’t make it, I’ll find some other job, even in Starbucks.” I was very determined. After all these years I know that success is born in your head.

PANI: You didn’t want to come back home?

Magdalena: I didn’t consider it, at all. Funny, that now I was happy to come to Poland, and back then all I wanted was to escape the ‘grey’ reality. I guess you need to get distant to appreciate what you have at home. When I landed in New York, I rented a bachelor flat with a Dutch girl and started attending castings. At first it was so-so, but the next season I opened Yves Saint Laurent show. It was a breakthrough, I was noticed by many people. Fashion shows for Dior with Galliano and Alexander McQueen were also important. I felt strong, I needed it. When I came to America I was fearful.

PANI: Your career is still expanding. Yet there are lots of new girls each season. Some of them become successful very fast and then instantly disappear from the fashion world.

Magdalena: Sometimes I explain to the girls that it’s not a big thing to do great campaigns in one season. It is much more difficult to be at the same level or higher level for the next 5, 10 years. My ambition is to be on the top for a long time. Many girls are put to sleep [?? Didn’t know if I could translate it like that, sorry] with the success, they party, they are late for work, they are capricious, stop taking care of themselves, get fat. For a model, similarly like for a sportsman, body is very important. I’m not saying to starve oneself-that is just stupid-but you need to eat wisely. I learnt all the things myself, I eat healthy, I eat little, but often. I can give myself a rigour. Even Wojtek, who is a great cook, won’t talk me into breaking my rules. Anyway, doesn’t matter if you have great metabolism or not, you need to exercise regularly, otherwise your body looses elasticity. I run 3 times a week, I often ride a bike. It’s also worth being nice, punctual, smiling, hard-working. Photoshoots take place on Saturdays, Sundays, start at 4, 5 AM and lasts the whole day. A model needs to bring good mood and help at work, not to disturb. Of course, you don’t have influence on everything. Suddenly there’s a need for a different kind of beauty and you get less offers. But those changes don’t occur to top models. Each of us becomes a muse for some important photographer, who wants to work with her.

PANI: You are the muse for well-known Steven Meisel.

Magdalena: He is my ‘godfather.’ After my first fashion weeks in New York, Milan, Paris I started working with him. Meisel is interested in new, undiscovered [? Sorry, didn’t know how to translate this one-the adjective was about ‘not being seen anywhere yet, that people haven’t seen enough of it yet] faces. It was like that in my case. Soon the photos of me appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia. Since that time I’ve worked together photographers in the world with the exception for Mario Testino. What is interesting, I always thought I’m Mario’s type, because he likes feminine models [lol, really? I mean, Magda is not exactly androgynous, but if I was asked to name 5 most feminine models Magda wouldn’t be one of them… ok, that was my off-coment, which is NOT the part of this interview] and I pass to be one. I believe the occasion will appear.

PANI: You have no resistance to appear naked. You worked with Terry Richardson many times, who takes very sexualized photos, he even gets called ‘the king of porn.’

Magdalena: Last time I worked with him was for Jimmy Choo campaign, the photoshoot for “Purple” was also important. In my opinion Terry is shocking in his private albums only, while his photoshoots for magazines or campaigns are not that shocking. He’s got his style and he is not trivial. Taking nude photoshoots is a thing of professionalism. While the photoshoot for “Purple” I posed naked and I didn’t feel uncomfortable. I like my body. I treat it like a sculpture. I see nothing wrong with a nude photograph made by photographers, who can catch its beauty. There are many false opinions circling around in the topic about photoshoots with naked models but it’s worth mentioning that no one calls Newton’s photos pornography.

PANI: I heard that Karl Lagerfeld likes you a lot?

Magdalena: I had the pleasure to work with him several times, not only in his shows or Chanel and Fendi campaigns, but also for his own brand Lagerfeld Gallery. We did photoshoots for magazines and photos for Pirelli Calendar. Lagerfeld is the modern Leonardo DaVinci. )He is engaged in clothes designing, film, photography, design. He is absolutely unpredictable, a lot more shocking than Richardson. Thanks to my job I met fantastic people. These experiences are valuable and developing. If somebody told me: “You are 20 years old again and you can once again make a decision, are you going the same way or another,” I would without the doubt choose the same. Maybe I only grew up too fast, this adolescent naivety which is very precious passed me by. Although I think these 10 years in this business were something beautiful.

PANI: And lucrative. Top models make big money.

Magdalena: If I wanted to compare myself with Kate Moss, then I think I make not a lot of money, but I have no reason to complain. I invest in real estate, not a long time ago I bought a flat in an old tenement house in the centre of Warsaw. Sometime I wonder whether I invest money wisely. I know I need to secure my future, but I don’t care about living in luxury. Often when I go on holidays, I stay at hostels and rent an old jeep. It seems to be more interesting to me than spending time in an exclusive hotel. I had this period in my life when I lived with a man who could make every wish of mine come true, but he never was by my side/near me because he was working all the time. It is important to have people you love next to you. In New York I had lots of acquaintances, mostly from fashion. Despite that I often felt lonely, because when I had time, they were busy and vice versa.

PANI: What a top model shouldn’t do?

Magdalena: Step down from the level she achieved, engage in uncertain venture. Most importantly she should avoid situations which could put her in a compromising discreditable position.

PANI: You stepped early in the world which has many vices. Alcohol, drugs, inappropriate men. How did you manage to avoid that?

Magdalena: It all depends on the way you were raised and your character. My parents talked with me a lot, explained things. At first in New York my main problem was to earn money for my livelihood. If I showed up to work tired, after a party, I would soon stop getting any offers. I never lost control over myself. I have too much respect for myself. Anyway, you don’t need to be a model in New York to drink and take drugs. If somebody is looking for that, then without bigger problems you can find all these things in Warsaw.

PANI: Lately you’ve started designing jewellery. Is it your Plan B for the future?

Magdalena: I always felt that modeling is not a creative occupation. I have beautiful photographs, but it’s not me who took them, I didn’t design those clothes. Seriously speaking, I am ashamed when people admire me, because the way I look, my face is not my merit. It’s good to know everything in right proportions. Fashion is a big business, but we’re not saving anyone’s life. Many models looks for something for themselves outside modeling. I started doing jewellery from gold myself. I take it very seriously. I bought jewellery waxes, mills/cutters[?], chisels found exquisite jeweler Marcin Strzałkowski who agreed to help me. He thinks I’m talented. Soon our Internet site launches, where one could find my ‘masterpieces’.

PANI: Imagine you are 40 years old….

Magdalena: I live in Thailand, I have a beautiful house, I am sitting in the garden where my kids are running around. I paint, do jewellery. I am definitely not seeing myself in the future in a pursuit of career, I value complacency. That’s why I am working so hard now, to be able to sort everything out one day.

THE END
