I'm also going to watch it, depends on the mood, because this genre in general doesn't interest me much.

Out of solidarity with Costner and his dedication + giving not only his soul and heart but money for this project I probably should also watch it in cinema

That seems exactly the main problem. Part 1 have to bring the money in so the other parts can be continued at all. But no one is watching part 1 because "it's just the beginning of a bigger story" so people decided to wait. Now parts 3 and 4 are having trouble ever getting made and isn't it ironic that they could only be saved by a streaming service that Costner actually avoided? lol

People seem to forget that movies for cinema aren't working like streaming services.

My guess is that Costner is a boomer who grew up with theaters being the gold standard so it may not have been a rational move (he always had a 'plan B' ) anyway.

Waterworld & the Postman damaged his career a long time ago and he may have been trying to wash away the bitterness with this gamble in the theaters.

‘Horizon': Kevin Costner Wants to Shoot Chapters 3 & 4 in Spring 2025

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” will be available on Max in two days. The perceived goal would be to grow an audience on streaming so that the already-shot ‘Chapter 2’ can be released theatrically in the very near future.

In May, Costner told me at Cannes that he’d shot nine days’ worth of footage for ‘Chapter 3’ and then had to halt production due to lack of funds. The goal was to shoot the rest of the film this summer, but those plans failed. Then word came out he was looking at a fall shoot. That clearly won’t be happening either.

Costner has now widened the goal posts and is telling NBC that the plan is to shoot Chapters 3 and 4 back-to-back next Spring. I wish him the best of luck and really hope it happens. No matter how mixed I was on the first Chapter, we deserve to see the full and completed version of this story, and I’m already hearing that the second one — set to premiere at Venice in September— is superior to Chapter 1.

The plan is, I’ve already shot a little bit of the third. And to perhaps shoot them back to back next spring […] I love the journey of this thing. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I love this movie. I love the second one — and the third one’s even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story.

There is currently no release date for ‘Horizon 2,’ which was originally supposed to come out in August but was pulled from the schedule by Warner Bros after the first instalment failed to lure audiences. Streamers like Netflix and Amazon have made offers to acquire the films, but it doesn’t sound like Costner is budging. He wants theatrical rollouts.

Is it weird that every bad review just makes me want to see these films even more? 😅 @Lilja K @Cult Icon

Kevin Costner's ‘Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2’ Earns Negative Reviews

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2” has screened on the Lido, and I see six reviews published, so far, and they’re all negative. Variety, Screen Rant, Screen, THR, The Wrap, Awards Watch are panning the film.

Reading through these writeups, they all look eerily similar to the ones the first film received at Cannes. There are many who believe this should have been a TV series instead of a film, and maybe they have a point.

After suddenly being pulled from the U.S. release calendar, ‘Chapter 2’ now has a steep hill to climb to build up any kind of excitement to justify a theatrical release. Screening this one at Venice was another risky move on the part of Costner. If you remember, the first ‘Horizon’ premiered at Cannes to very mixed reviews and that set the tone for the film’s doomed fate at the box-office. Doing it all over again, but this time at Venice, and it’s deja vu all over again.

There is currently no release date for ‘Chapter 2,’ which was originally supposed to be released in August but was pulled from the schedule by Warner Bros after the first instalment, which cost $110M, failed to lure an audience into buying a movie ticket — earning just $29M domestically.

Streamers like Netflix and Amazon made offers to acquire the ‘Horizon’ series, but it doesn’t sound like Costner accepted their offer. He wants theatrical rollouts.

In the meantime, Costner has repeatedly stated that he will be shooting ‘Chapter 3’ in August/September. He already shot nine days’ worth of footage in April before production had to temporarily shut down due to lack of funds. If Costner has indeed found the money to continue filming the third instalment, there is no guarantee that it will even find distribution.

Yeah well.... in Kevin I trust. He'll figure it out 😅

Kevin Costner Isn't Sure How He'll Make ‘Horizon 3'

“Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” did not perform well at the box office, and ‘Chapter 2’ is receiving weak reviews out of Venice, but writer, director, and star Kevin Costner says he’s determined to finish his multipart Western epic.

“I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill. I've gotta go put my hands on it again and start to push it up," Costner said in Venice, becoming visibly emotional as he spoke. "It's a rope that I cannot let go of. I don't know how I'm gonna make ‘Chapter 3’ right now, but I'm gonna make it."

Costner had repeatedly stated that he would be shooting ‘Chapter 3’ in the fall, but now he’s not quite sure that’ll happen. He shot nine days’ worth of footage in April, but production had to temporarily shut down due to lack of funds.

There is currently no release date for ‘Chapter 2,’ which was pulled from Warner Bros’ summer schedule after the first instalment, which cost $110M, failed to lure an audience into theaters, earning just $29M domestically.

Costner explained that the decision to delay the second film's release was indeed affected by the first film’s box office performance. “It didn’t have overwhelming success," he said, per Variety, before noting, “I’ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time."

Costner went on to explain that it was Warner Bros’ “decision” to release ‘Chapter 2’ six weeks after the first film's release, before they backtracked and decided “not” to release it. Still, Costner claims that he’s happy things turned out the way they did.

“For me, it fell back into my plan, which was I always wanted to come out with movies about five-six months apart. And that was going to allow me to come to Venice,” the actor said. “I would have never come to Venice, because they won’t show the film here if it was already out.”

US bankruptcy laws are pretty lenient, and this is often declared to settle one's finances (so he is possibly not actually broke).  I guess this was his passion and I wouldn't be surprised if he thought it was still worth it.

Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: Chapter 2’ Sets U.S. Premiere

Somewhat good news for Kevin Costner‘s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2.” It’s set to have its U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7. Costner will be in attendance for the post-screening Q&A.

There is currently no release date for ‘Chapter 2,’ which was pulled from Warner Bros’ summer 2024 schedule after the first instalment, which cost $110M, failed to lure an audience into theaters, earning just $29M domestically.

‘Chapter 2’ had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, albeit to weak reviews which further complicated matters for a potential future release.

Warner Bros doesn’t seem to have an official game plan when it comes to ‘Chapter 2.’ Its current state is in limbo. Recently, Puck’s Matt Belloni had his sources expressing doubt about it ever hitting theatres, and that maybe, without Costner’s approval, a straight to streaming debut on Max could happen.

This month, ‘Chapter 1’ pulled in very good numbers on streaming — peaking at #2 on the Netflix charts. It proved that there was an audience for this franchise, but maybe not in theaters.

Last summer, Costner shot nine days’ worth of footage for ‘Chapter 3’ before production had to be shut down due to lack of funds. You know who might be willing to kickstart production back up again? Netflix. Just saying. At this point, the wisest thing Costner could do is turn these movies into streaming events.
