The situation in the Ukraine is rapidly getting worse, literally by the hour right now.  social media is showing that the Russians are cutting off Northern Ukraine.

Putin has the nuclear triad, which means he can hit anyone. Of course, NATO can second strike him, but all of this would be a fucking massacre.

How the f*** did all of this escalated so quickly?

The Russians have not released their losses (too early).  I think these are just based on Ukrainian claims.  I get the impression that the Ukrainians are boasting a lot- which is understandable given their bad situation and hoping to get aid.

All the ground combat phone clips I've seen are of very small numbers of tanks, armored vehicles, trucks, and mobile weapons systems getting knocked out on a road, often only 2 or so.  I am not sure if these wrecks are Ukrainian or Russian- they use similar style equipment.  Besides that,  if these wrecks are Russian this gives the impression that the Ukrainian forces hit them with Anti-tank weapons and then the bulk vehicle columns left.

Besides that there are a lot of phone clips of helicopters and aircraft being shot down. However we do not know if these are Russian or Ukrainian.

Also, a curious lack of clips showing masses of dead or Russian prisoners in significant numbers.

The Ukrainians must somehow launch a massed coordinated counteroffensive to retake the ground they've lost or else the Russians will continue advancing.   This may be stillborn due to the Russian interdiction that has been going on with all the airstrikes and missile attacks.

They (Kremlin) claimed that they have suffered ZERO casualties.

Yea, I know- the Russians are not interested in accurately reporting their losses to the world...

This is one Ukrainian claim (4300 personnel, 146 tanks, 27 aircraft, 26 helicopters).

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukrainian-minister-says-russia-lost-some-4300-men-invasion-2022-02-27/

The problem however, is even these claims-if accurate- are not high enough to stop the Russians.

The failure in the strategic and operational sense for Russia is hard to make sense of.

Like, how do the Ukrainians still have functioning planes and drones this far along into the invasion?

Russia has massive air superiority and one of the best AA systems in the world. It all makes no sense whatsoever, unless there is a massive failure of leadership from the top all the way down to the unit commanders.

Which would also explain insane stuff, like units that don't even appear to have maps of the area they are invading...

No idea what's going on in this conflict due to the propaganda from both sides, so many things have been proven to be false.

Yea, most of the commentary by western journalists/politicians show a very poor level of basic military knowledge, and a lot of bombastic claims.

What is indisputable however is the loss of territory, and the encirclement manuevers, and also the spotting of Russian columns by Ukrainian civilians in the interior.

Russian army loses 29 aircraft, 191 tanks, 5,300 personnel in Ukraine in four days – Defense Ministry

In addition, according to her, during this period the aggressor lost 191 tanks, 816 armored combat vehicles, 291 vehicles, 60 tanks, and two ships.  Of the weapons, the Russian army lost 74 guns, 1 Buk anti-aircraft missile system, and 21 Grad multiple rocket launchers.

"The information is indicative and can be refined, since it is extremely difficult to obtain it after the battle, because the commanders primarily focus on the conduct of the battle. In addition, we can receive information only at the end of the battle, and battles can be extremely long in time. Data can arrive the next day, or sometimes in a day. In addition, if the battle continued at night, and began on one calendar date, and ended on another, then it is quite difficult to separate on which day certain losses occurred," Maliar said

Ukraine's claims for 2/27 is 1000 casualties inflicted for one combat day plus 44 Russian tanks knocked out.

For certain the Russians are sending detachments of vehicles, sometimes reinforced with tanks into Ukraine without clearing the defenses  methodically.  Literally they are getting spotted far in the rear, and the Ukrainians are sometimes inflicting losses on them.   In their combat doctrine this is called "forward detachment", it's aimed creating encirclements, raiding, or disrupting the enemy's logistics.
