I don't think I remember any conflict with so much images / videos on the internet.

I used to watch lots of video reports on the Chechen wars and the most "immersive" was from a Russian soldier who had a "portable" VHS camera (and it was very vintage, you couldn't clearly understand what was going on - except that this was a mess)

any of this on  youtube?  The fighting there looked like hell on earth.

It's due to phones being everywhere.  Also I think the Ukrainians are purposely doing this for morale/psyops.  I wish that Iraq/Afganistan would have such footage.

There are these ones, but I can't find the one from the Russian soldier, which was the most interesting and "relatively" immersive (I remember this soldier had a moustache, he filmed several operations and in one of them the Russian soldiers collect Chechen ears - but it didn't help me find the video. I saw it either on Arte or France 5).

This one is in three parts.

This one is more journalist focused (not my favorite one).

These nerds claim to have collected all the visual info on the internet and have continually updated a list of Russian/Ukrainian vehicle losses.

It really looks like typical WW2 Soviet ratios- When the Soviets attack, they lose 3-5 times more vehicles but when they defend it is around 1 for 1.  The Russian style is to treat vehicles and their crews as somewhat disposible- push them forward to the max- in the offensive and refill them after the operation.  The organizational structure of their units reflects these tactics, with much less ammunition/fuel, service and support than Western-style armored/mechanized formations.  And low-cost/more crude but still high powered equipment.

Unfortunatley for Ukraine I believe that these are marginal losses relative to what Russia has in their units, they must be rearming with their huge stocks as I post this.  I am surprised that these guys spotted 1st Guards Tank Army, an elite of the Russian army.

https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html

Russia - 901, of which: destroyed: 358, damaged: 10, abandoned: 150, captured: 381

Ukraine - 272, of which: destroyed: 94, damaged: 4, abandoned: 44, captured: 127

It seems like non-elite Russian infantry are not issued optics, which is odd as this cheap device is much better than iron sights.  The vehicles are well armed but the Russian infantry are not well equipped by American standards.

For this self-propelled artillery, which is being used right now...the  Russians developed "small tactical nukes" (basically a 152mm shell that has a small nuclear warhead in them...)

I suspect that weapons like these are why the Ukrainians shy away from counter-attacking the Russians.

I'm increasingly convinced that a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is now all but inevitable. If not now in Ukraine, then in the next few years someplace else.

The only scenario in which I can see that being avoided is regime change in Russia, but that is very unlikely to happen. Extremely so even.

Literally the President of Ukraine is pleading for America to start WW3 on TV...

His "No fly zone" is basically asking NATO to engage in air combat with the Russian air force over Ukraine.

He literally wants NATO to go to war with Russia..

I find it interesting that this "Special military operation" is, categorically- not considered a declaration of war.  Thus it is illegal for Russia to activate reservists.  Putin has repeatedly emphasized this.  But if Russia declares war on Ukraine the reservists will be activated...

Right, but on the other hand, Russia cannot afford to commit all/most of their troops to Ukraine.

Already Japan is looking at some contested islands. Apparently some of the garrison that usually occupies those is now also in Ukraine?

If he activates the reservists, he will generate a lot of motorized/mechanized infantry formations, and send them into Ukraine.

Wall Street Journal interviewed a US defense official who said that the Russians are recruiting Syrians for the war in Ukraine because the Russians need people to fight house to house.  On the Ukrainian side, they have already raised a legion of 18,000 foreigners (last I heard).

Analysts at this institute are predicting that the Russians will launch a "battle for Kyiv" in 24-96 hours (3/8/2022)

Very insightful report on current military situation.

Ukrainian War journalist Andriy Tsaplienko:

Spoiler

https://t.me/Tsaplienko/2306

Ukrainian War journalist Andriy Tsaplienko, current situation:

The Ukrainian army stopped the offensive of the Russian troops in all directions. However, the situation remains tense, the enemy continues stubborn battles in order to achieve new breakthroughs, conducts massive bombardments of cities and villages in Ukraine in order to intimidate the civilian population and force them to stop resistance. The Russian command shifts the direction of the main strikes to the Donbass. The climax of the battle is coming and there is a struggle for strategic initiative, Ukrainian opportunities are increasing.

The situation west of Kyiv remains tense. The grouping of Russian troops continues to attempt to capture Kyiv and is trying to cut off the communications of the capital. Makarov remains under the control of the Ukrainian troops, there are heavy fighting. The enemy is fighting in Irpen, Bucha, Gostomel, Vorzel and the surrounding area. The Russians went to the Zhytomyr highway to threaten Fastov. The Ukrainian army is not yet able to quickly grind down such large forces, but is actively reducing their numbers. The enemy is trying to expand the bridgehead. At the same time, the enemy is trying to break through from the eastern direction to Brovary. The situation remains tense, there are fierce battles.

The situation near Kharkov. The Russians are afraid to approach the city, there is no threat to Kharkov on earth. Russian aviation continues large-scale artillery and air strikes to tie up the actions of the city's garrison. On March 7, Ukrainian troops liberated Chuguev near Kharkov and confidently control the situation around the city.

Mariupol continues to fight heroically surrounded for 8 days. Water supply, light, heat are completely destroyed in the city. Corpses lie on the streets and in apartments that are no longer cleaned, the number of civilians and children killed is already in the hundreds. A direct hit destroyed a hospital, an intensive care unit, and there is nowhere to save people from serious injuries. The Russians do not let people out of the city so that they continue to consume food, water for themselves, and reduce the supply of supplies for the city's defenders. The enemy conducts continuous reconnaissance from the air and strikes at any target. Pure genocide. However, our warriors are incredibly steadfast in the most difficult conditions, and inflict powerful blows on the assault group even in such an environment. Mariupol, with its excellent resistance, allows Ukraine to control the corridor to the Crimea from the Russian Federation, and distracts a large grouping of the RF Armed Forces. The situation in Mariupol is the most serious on the entire front, the Russians will try to take the city by storm, it cannot be ignored.

Chernigov. Fierce battles are going on around the city. Russian troops are trying to completely surround and block the city. Ukrainian troops are not just sitting on the defensive, but counterattacking at the slightest opportunity. Russian troops retaliate for the defeat of the bombing of residential areas.

Sumy and Okhtyrka. Russian troops are trying to completely surround Sumy. In the area of the city, the enemy suffered heavy losses.

Ukraine has managed to mobilize sufficient forces to put up barriers in the direction of the attacks of Russian troops. The turning point in the war depends on the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to counterattack the long guts of the Russian advancing columns, and to tie down the enemy with active offensive operations in all directions. The Russians are superior in technology and weapons, dominate the air, but the Ukrainians are superior in numbers and motivation.

The threat to Kiev is great, but there will be no assault on the capital, the number of defenders of the capital exceeds the number of advancing formations of the RF Armed Forces. Therefore, the enemy concentrated all reserves in order to surround the capital from all sides. The pressure on Fastov will continue because the Russians must maintain pressure on Kyiv and prevent the Ukrainians from transferring their forces from here.
