The series is based on characters and elements appearing in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and focuses on the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers. Prettyphile Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Brilliant show! easily in my top 10 all time favorite tv shows of all time.At first I was skeptical of another playing other then Anthony H playing Hannibal, but this guy is amazing! Oh and FINALLY a positive depiction of Aspergers on tv. Quote
Cult Icon Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Is it really, Yvette? Why is it so good?I'm a big fan of Anthony Hopkins and his character (and the first 3 films). How is this character/cast different? The man who plays Hannibal should have a nordic accent and a flat, monotone voice based on his performance in Casino Royale.....I would be afraid that Hopkins owns this character too deep. Quote
PinkCouture Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Only seen 3 episodes. Not yet hooked. Still trying to get into the show but maybe after a few more episodes I will Quote
Cult Icon Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Any thoughts? Has anybody read Silence of the Lambs or Red Dragon? The first episode is streaming on a site I use and I just watched all the 'Dr. Lector' parts selectively. My initial impression of Mads' performance is that much of his icy effect is a combination of his appearance, natural mannerisms, nordic-ness, foreign intonation, and is really not a creative interpretation of the character in the manner of Anthony Hopkins. His soft way of speaking and some of the unnatural pivots in the writing detracts from the forcefulness of the ideas behind his speech. On occasion, it makes him look like he's reciting lines rather than acting and that his words are not in fact his own. There is a lot of paraphrasing from 'Red Dragon' in Mads' lines but really...I see Mads playing Mads rather than Lector here. I also scratch my head at all the openly suspicious Lector remarks inserted by the screenplay writers. Readers of the novel can probably correct me; Did Lector risk his integrity by teasing Will with psychological hints? But to Mads' credit, his performance is closer to the Lector of the novel rather than the more theatrical and openly fascinating/intimidating version from Hopkins. Overall, AH >> Mads but Mads and Lector is >>> almost all fictional villains. --------------------- This is the 'mystery meat'. It looks like some sort of Tofu product. Supposedly, human meat has a neutral taste like chicken but at the same time it has the texture of veal. But what do I know??? ----- I just downloaded the first 6 episodes! ---------- Here's a link to a Dec. 2012 Thread of mine about one of my favorite films- Hannibal. I had a short discussion with Baron. http://www.bellazon....cotts-hannibal/ I welcome a revival of my thread. Quote
Michael* Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 A promising first episode, I thought. I wouldn't be surprised if the show was binned off before reaching anything resembling a conclusion, but we'll see how it goes. Quote
Prettyphile Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 The show needs to hurry up and come back already Quote
KelAnne_ Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 ^ I agree. I didn't think I would be into the tv series but I love it. It's great. The characters are fantastic, the acting is fantastic. I also give props for how they treat females in the show, some male characters from the books have been changed to female because Bryan Fuller wanted more females in the show, and not just as victims, like a lot of other crime shows use women to be - I think I've seen more male victims rather than female.I really hope it doesn't get cancelled though, Bryan has done some amazing shows but they seem to get cancelled after a few seasons, even when critics love the show. Cult Icon Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Which hannibal do you guys like better- Hopkins or Mads? I obviously like Hopkins better but Mads does a good job anyway. I definitely feel like Mads is overdressed for the character. He's too gaudy. I feel like it's not appropriate for the character at all. He's not a gangster with a pimp cane. He's supposed to enjoy these things "internally" and not need to dress flashy just to attract attention. Quote

Old post but I was surprised to see so many scenes and characters from the films reappear in the TV show (eg. manhunter/red dragon and hannibal) Quote
