Sergio Ramos wins an award

The defender is awarded the Sports Elite Award of Móstoles

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos received an accolade in the 10th Sports Award Ceremony of Móstoles. Rubén de la Red and former Real Madrid players Alfonso and Iván Pérez were also at the ceremony.

The Móstoles Theatre was the venue chosen for the Madrid Sports Awards ceremony, hosted by sports journalist and TV presenter Javier Callejo and model and presenter Eva González.

City Hall of Móstoles has given awards these past ten years to the best sportsmen and sportswomen of Madrid. Former Real Madrid striker Alfonso Pérez -currently on the veteran team of the Club- gave an award to athlete Ángel David Rodríguez and commented on the team's current situation. "Every Madridista was disappointed with the third goal conceded aginst Barcelona, but the team are capable of coming back from that and of winning the League. We must have faith in them."

Later on, midfielder Rubén De la Red, who grew up in Móstoles, gave the Outstanding Achievement Award to a representative of the ONCE - Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles. The Whites' youth system player also shared his opinion on the team's chances this year. "I think we are going to win the League," he said.

When the ceremony was close to an end, Sergio Ramos gave the Sports Journalism Award to Tomás Roncero. "I am very happy with the fact that Sergio has been chosen to give me the award," said the journalist, "Players like him and Casillas will recover the spirit of former players like Juanito, which is the spirit Real Madrid should always have."

"I'm proud of giving the award to a great Madridista like Roncero," added Ramos, "I think that if we don't lose any more points we will be able to win the League."

Following this, the defender turn to received the most important accolade of the evening, the Sports Elite Award, which acknowledges the great work the Sevillian is doing at Real Madrid, earning the respect and admiration of the fans and players from rival teams.

"It was worth the suffering"

The Madridistas are two of the most important members of the Spanish national team. Sergio Ramos' runs down the right wing were a continous threat to Iceland, especially in the first half. And, of course, the goalkeeper's saves helped decide the final result. Following the match, the Real Madrid defender and keeper gave two thumbs up to the victory, despite having suffered more than expected.

Sergio Ramos

“The truth of the matter is that it was a hard-earned victory. The team worked well and we didn't deserve a draw. I think the team went all out in attack and we didn't let up during the entire 90 minutes. [iceland] were closed in on their side of the pitch, making it hard for us to score. Forunately, Iniesta was able to hit the back of the net and we were able to take three very important points. We now have three months to take it easy and we're able to look ahead to our next matches knowing we got the job done.”

Iker Casillas

"We took the three points against a rival who closed up in defence and made things pretty hard for us. I was never able to see Arconada play because all I remember is from Italy '90 onwards, but he was always my idol and pulling even with him is a tremendous success."
