Sergio Ramos to AS

"We will fight hard"

Sergio Ramos has placed his bets. According to him, Real Madrid will win every game left until the end of the season, taking 24 points. Sevilla would take 12, while Barcelona and Valencia would only take 10 each. His calculations would make Real Madrid League champions with 78 points after their final game in the competition against Mallorca.

RAMOS' FOOTBALL POOL

"We will have to fight hard because the competition is very tight. I have faith in the team and I'm sure we will put up a good fight. I personally think we will win every game and that our direct opponents will make mistakes. I'm sure of it."

"We depend on what Barcelona do, but they will surely drop points. We must never give up and we should take advantage of their bad results. I'm sure we will celebrate the title with our fans at Cibeles Fountain."

According to the defender, Real Madrid will win the 24 points still at stake in the competition. Barcelona and Valencia will win 10 points and Sevilla 12. Ramos thinks the Whites will win the League with 78 points, followed by Barcelona with 69, Sevilla with 67 and Valencia with 63.

THE RIVALS

REAL MADRID-VALENCIA:

"We no longer have stage fright at the Bernabéu and we will do our best to win. It will be a key game and we won't fail."

ATHLETIC BILBAO-REAL MADRID:

"They have just won two back-to-back games and they are mentally strong. Nevertheless, we defeated them in Bilbao in the King's Cup last year."

REAL MADRID-SEVILLA:

"It will obviously be a very special game for me. The League will be at stake. I hope my former team win the UEFA and the King's Cup, but the League must be ours."

REAL MADRID-ESPANYOL:

"They may be somewhat distracted because they are still in the UEFA Cup and we won't drop any more points at the Bernabéu."

RECREATIVO HUELVA-REAL MADRID and REAL MADRID-DEPORTIVO:

"We will look for revenge to get rid of the thorn we've had on our sides since we lost against them both."

ZARAGOZA-REAL MADRID:

"A draw may be enough for us by then, but we'll be on a role and we'll take the three points."

REAL MADRID-MALLORCA

"We should celebrate that day. We will win and we will go straight to Cibeles."

REFEREE

"We just want to play football. We don't want to think about those things. We only ask them to be fair."

Ruud and Ramos are the Real deal

[22 Apr 2007]

Real Madrid players had been saying all week that they had to beat Valencia to stay in the Spanish title race and they did just that with a 2-1 victory over the 2002 and 2004 champions on Saturday.

Goals from Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Sergio Ramos means that Real move up to second place, at least overnight.

The 29-time Spanish champions are now two points ahead of Sevilla but still two points behind the league leaders and their eternal foes Barcelona with seven games to go.

Both of Real's two main rivals for the La Liga crown also have a game in hand and play Sunday.

Van Nistelrooy scored his 17th league goal of the season with a spectacular right-foot volley from just inside the right hand edge of the area after an inch-perfect pass from Miguel Torres on the left wing.

Real then had a purple patch of around 15 minutes when Van Nistelrooy and club captain Raul Gonzalez should have added to their tally.

However Valencia got back into the game just before the break and shortly afterwards Fernando Morientes scored against his old club, where he had spent eight seasons and been part of teams that had won the Champions League three times.

Morientes found the net seven minutes after the break after finding the space to side foot home a Joaquin Sanchez cross, after the Spanish international winger had outsprinted Torres down the right wing.

Real were clearly determined to maintain their championship challenge against a team that had beaten them in the Santiago Bernabeu last season.

Sergio Ramos got the winner 17 minutes from time when he rose above the Valencia defence to head home a David Beckham free kick.

It was a huge contribution from the former England captain after only being on the pitch barely five minutes and was playing his first game for six weeks after recovered from a knee injury.

Real were overall the better side but still had to survive some nervous moments in the final as Valencia pressed hard for a draw.

Once again, Real's hero on the night was not just the men who found the net but their goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who made an outstanding diving save to deny his fellow Spanish internationals Aitor Del Horno and David Villa in the final minutes.

Madrid resume title march

Real Madrid CF are still in the Spanish title hunt after defeating Valencia CF 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on a night when Real Sociedad de Fútbol boosted their survival chances with a 2-0 win against Clube Atlético de Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy volley

Madrid took the lead after 18 minutes when Ruud Van Nistelrooy met Miguel Torres's left-wing cross with a rasping first-time volley from 14 metres which left Santiago Cañizares with no chance. Valencia replied shortly after the break, however, when Fernando Morientes struck against his old side, finishing a fine run and cross from Joaquín Sánchez.

Ramos header

In an open game there were chances at either end until Sergio Ramos rose bravely to head in David Beckham's free-kick from close range on 73 minutes and move Madrid to within two points of leaders FC Barcelona, who visit Villarreal CF on Sunday. Third-placed Sevilla FC, meanwhile, can leapfrog Fabio Capello’s side with victory at home against Athletic Club Bilbao.

Survival hopes

Earlier on, Real Sociedad kept their chances of avoiding relegation alive with a 2-0 home win against Atlético Madrid. Serbian international striker Darko Kovačević poked in Savio's cross for an early opener and it was not until six minutes from time that Brazilian forward Savio volleyed in the decider. By then Atlético had seen midfielder Peter Luccin and defender Fabiano Eller sent off midway through the second half. Sociedad, who claimed their third win in four matches, remain second from bottom in the league, three points from safety. Atlético are in sixth place.
