In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

Besson has had a few misfires but by and large, his stuff seems to do well at the box office.

 

Interestingly, this movie seems very Mass Effect from a visual standpoint. Or perhaps Mass Effect was partly inspired by the original Valerian comics, I'm not too sure. :idk:

French Sci- fi IMHO, eg. Metabarons:

 

The creativity is very intricate

On balance, I think Besson was a little too preoccupied with showing off the world he’d created to tell an interesting story. It was an exhilarating ride and there were things in it that were positively jaw-dropping at times, but the end product was more like a series of cool episodes laid out one after another than a cohesive movie. Give it a look if you've got tenner to spare and nothing to do on a Tuesday evening. :laugh:
