Deus ex (series)

Deus ex is a series of games, set during the 21st century, focuses on the conflict between secretive factions who wish to control the world by proxy, and the effects of transhumanistic attitudes and technologies in a dystopian future setting. The series consists of: Deus Ex (2000), Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003), Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011), Deus Ex: The Fall (2013), Deus Ex Go (2016) and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016).

I really really liked the first Deus Ex, but the last one (mankind divided) is the best in my opinion (and it's not always the case for games or movies - far from it actually)

Deus Ex rocks because:

a) Adam Jensen

b) JC Denton

I actually found the most recent Deus game a wee bit overrated, but some of the features in the earlier games were really cool. I loved being able to build up the 'Augs' carefully, because strengthening in one area usually came at the expense of another, and those choices led to different strategies. Somewhere along the line, it might have been in Human Revolution, it became a bit easier to get all the Augs before the end of the game, so although there was more variety on offer, I missed the emphasis on strategy a little. Still though, some of my fondest gaming memories are from playing Invisible War. :hehe:

True. The aug system in the latest games is not as good as it used to be. I can also add that the weapons are not so great and not diversified (I only used the stun gun). Still, there are major points in Mankind Divided that make it really great (IMO):

- the story is really good. Deux ex was on conspiracies, social unrest and AI; I really liked it. Deus Ex MD is all this plus the idea of division in humanity. Even more interesting.

- Adam Jensen is a kick ass charcter. JC Denton was very good, but Adam is better :hehe:

- graphics are great! It's like being in reality. Pavements in Prague are so realistic!

@Enrico_sw  I heard today that "human revolution" is actually a concept in Buddahism (sounds similar to nirvana, I'm not completely sure)

I didn't know that. I don't know much about Buddhism, but it sounds interesting.

I think that the mysticism and the sort of "mythological" artwork are part of the reason why this game worked so much. They have a lot of references to the Greek mythology, like Icarus. The reference is very explicit it in the trailer of Deus Ex Human revoution (I really like this trailer). They start by Rembrandt's "Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp" (the science guys working) and then Adam becomes Icarus who gets his wings burnt.

Icarus and Daedalus were A.I. in Deus Ex 1.

The music itself is both futuristic and kind of mystical. They often combine electronic music and plainchant.

They should do a movie. This would be a great material for movie.

have you seen Ghost in the Shell and its sequel?  There is also a TV series that explores such things in depth.

I enjoy the theme of Icarus very much.  It causes human beings to go on a journey of discovery and take great risks and radical action.  The idea of rising to a higher level of existence (mostly in the external world, but also  in the inner life) within a short period of time with radical efforts.  This is the story of the communists, the nazis, and the "next american century".  Buddhism and Hinduism is more about aiming to rise in one's deep inner life to get full control of consciousness.
