Stawrogin Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 To me the sign of the supermodel is recognised by people who are not interested on fashion business.Right now VS give girls a name! and make them celebrity.Imho, that's right. But in that sense, I don't think that KK or Gisele are the next supermodels, because they don't have what it takes to be successful outside the fashion business, and fashion alone is not sufficient to be a Super-model. I think that today Heidi is the only one who is possibly a supermodel. Concerning modelling, Gisele of course is more successful at the moment. But Heidi is a popular TV presenter in two of the most important markets, USA and Germany, and she's the star of the yellow press. Undoubtedly, Gisele is a TOP-model, but Heidi is a SUPER-model, because she is the only one who has reached a level ABOVE fashion, while still modelling.I don't think that any of the other well-known models can do that, too. Just think of Adriana's poor command of the english language, eight years after her first VS show! The only one with some potential might be Izabel. She has charme and wits and she's done already more outside the fashion world than the veteran Adriana, e.g. minor roles in TV and she was on one of the important shows (Conan), Adriana wasn't. But Izabel is still too young to make a prediction. Quote
Taben Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Where are you from, Strawberry bigmac ? i'm sorry but Adriana Lima is not famous at all in europe, the only ppl that know her are members of internet boards like BZ and readers of men's magazines...As far as tyra heidi and gisele go... well they're not that famous in europe either... actually the only supermodels that are really famous worldwide are claudia schiffer, kate moss, naomi campbell, laetitia casta and cindy crawford IMO... just tell anybody in the streets the names of linda evangelista, stephanie semour, helena christensen, shalom harlow etc and i'm pretty sure they will look at you with big, round eyes... they might have seen them in ads but that's as far as it gets...As i said before, the only ppl that know all the so-called supermodels are either fashion-interested ppl or readers of men's magazines... Just because someone is famous in the USA doesn't mean they're famous worldwide, and i think our take on supermodels is biased because obviously we know who they are and we know that they do a lot of stuff... but just because WE know them and we know that they are everywhere doesn't mean that the average guy (who lives outsides the US and has no interest in fashion, like most ppl on this planet actually) know them... valmount Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I don't agree with you Gisele part.I think she is already reach the level of Claudia,Laetita,Kate.....To me even she surpass them. She has big fashion contracts on europe and usa,big non-fashion contract with world wide brand Mac and of course her legendry VS contract and appearing on every big mag.Her relationship with Leo makes her enough famous to world wide. Her statues is unquestionable. She is the diva now.and a lot bigger and famous than the some of the supermodels you mentioned. Nah,I think Daria's career slow down and she ll not get bigger than the she is now.Gemma has a chance but I don't think she can appeal to none-fashion people.KK is the strongest model now to who has a chance to become a supermodel or she already is.I really think that Ale will hit big this year Quote

Expresso Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Yeah it's true. It's funny actually. I made this new wallpaper of Adriana and Gisele a couple of days ago and my family keeps asking: who are they? Quote
ILOVETrentini Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Honestly, I think that the era of models working as hard as Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and the rest of the legends is over-- permanently. There are too many models nowadays who look too similar, and hardly any of them are your "classic beauties". Give me one girl who doesn't look like another, but has a name that is "Americanized" so that they can be popular in America/Europe/whereever. I think it's difficult for people who aren't interested in fashion to remember names that aren't from their home country, especially if there is weird spelling/isn't spelt how it's sound/etc.Gisele is probably one of the only models who is recognized by people who aren't interested in fashion, but she's hardly at the level of Kate or Naomi. She's still got a few years left in her career, but if she keeps doing VS she's hardly going to get any further. Quote
Prettyphile Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I think Stephanie Seymour says it best.I think the word "Supermodel" is used very loosely. That word was really used for the 90's, when there was a group of models who really became more then just models, they were celebrities, they had names that were attached to their faces, and I think that's what made that group of models different, that they were alive, they were human, they just weren't these perfect little cut out figures.Allure Magazine Supermodel Shoot. Prettyphile Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Currently I think the only current "supermodels" are Tyra, Naomi, Kate, Cindy, Heidi and Gisele. They are known world wide by name and face.Even now I can ask 200+ guys (ppl in my guild WoW Sublime ftw) or my male friend IRL and ask them if they think Adriana, Karolina, Isabeli, Natasha, Izabel, Ale, (ect) are pretty and 95% of them will blink at you as say "who?"But you says Naomi, Cindy, Gisele, Kate, Tyra or Heidi's name, and every single one of them know who they are.Adriana and Ale are very popular MODELS.. However I'm starting to doubt they will ever be seen as "Supermodels" and if they aren't going to become "supermodels".. then the rest of the VS models have no chance in the world of getting the title.However.... odd note.. More then 50% of the men I speak to know who Miss Casta is as well as Helena C who they often call " the Hot Wicked game video chick... aka The "wet dreams girl" / most beautiful woman ever" .. It makes me giggle! Quote
Jennka Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I just want to add, that I live in Europe, in a little country named Slovakia, and when I mention ALL the models to someone here, the only one they know is Gisele they might have not know even Tyra or Heidi, or Cindy and Claudia, but they DO know Gisele, and that´s...hm...whow yeah, I know it has to do a lot with Leo and the Taxi movie, but she´s still the only model whose advertisement was on the WHOLE ONE SIDE of a BIG building (with that D&G perfumme), I mean, there has NEVER ever been such a huge thing down here, and especially not from a fashion! btw, Kate has raised her popularity when her cocain affair occured...eventhough she was popular before, this was like a SHOCK to the whole world Quote
ennaid Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 i've heard so many times that Gisele has been called the supermodel so my mind is already made up that Gisele is already one...and considering all that she has done from high-fashion stuff (she has graced the runway shows of every big designers there is) to commercial and now is starting to cross-over to movies which i think just adds to her popularity...and not to mention her never-ending campaigns Quote
Taben Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Honestly, I think that the era of models working as hard as Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and the rest of the legends is over-- permanently. i'm sorry but i don't think that's true. As Julia Stegner said in an interview, those "supermodels" could be the biggest bitches, be rude, be late, act like divas... they still got hired. Now if you want to get the job you have to be nice, on time, work long hours and don't complain. Some girls do more than 50 shows in a season, and records of the biggest numbers of shows are owned by the newer models like Daria. I honnestly believe that fashion weeks are the most tiring and hardest bits of the year for a model. Just because they get less exposure than the supermodels when they were still in the business doesn't mean they don't work as hard Quote
Taben Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Do you think their is any black women that are up and comming...like what about Chanel Iman and Mimi Roche? i don't think Mimi or Chanel has the potential to be supermodels (Chanel is a newcomer so it's hard to say though, but i don't like her looks at all ). Oluchi could have been a supermodel but it didn't happen, something must have gone wrong in the management of her career Quote
rouge red Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Agreed about Oluchi Naomi and Iman are and for the nearest future will stay the only black supermodels, I think. Liya Kebede could have done it too, but her priority is her family... Quote
