Muffin Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 oh yea, Duke got lucky tonight. Deleware St. couldn't hit a shot from 3 ball land early thats what bailed duke out in the end. Dukes does have shotty defensive players but the one thing they do good and I'll give credit to them is that they find a way to play good team defense. They played a marvelous zone defense in the second half forcing DS to shoot over them.I only saw the 1st part. Quote

It's called that cause this area has the most tobacco farms in the state with the highest export. Three teams with a storied history play in this area, N.C State plays in Raleigh, where I live, Duke plays in Durham whose city limits is only two miles north of where I live, and UNC, who plays in Chapel Hill just about 7 miles west of where I live. My team, the University of North Carolina, is famous for its long story history in college basket, winning three national championships and having the longest active streak of going to the NCAA tournament. The greatest coach of all time, Dean Smith, coached here. Many consider Dean to be the pioneer of modern college basketball. And of course, who can forget, this is the school where the great one himself played, Jordan. More recently Duke has been the team to beat. Although they are consistantly voted as the most hated team in America year after year, they have been contendors to win the National Championship year after year after year thanks mainly to the excellent coaching of "Coach Kyzerescki", don't bother trying to learn how to spell that or pronounce it, just say Coach K. In any case after UNC won their last title in 1993, Duke took control of the ACC, winning nearly all of the regular season and ACC tourney titles in the last 12 years. N.C. State is famous for its miracle tournament championship run in the year I was born, 1983. I'm sure you've heard of the Jimmy V foundation? Jimmy V was the coach that year, and soon after winning that story book title Jimmy V was diagnosed with cancer. After that N.C. State struggled until recently, when Coach Herb Sendeck and outstanding player Julius Hodge restored its pride a little. Quote

Their home is in Winston - Salem, NC, but their old town Wake Forest, is just south of where I live. They use to call this are the four corners of college basketball. Actually, many consider John Wooden, the former UCLA basketball coach, to be the greatest coach of all-time. In addition to UCLA winning numerous NCAA tournaments when he coached there, he also coached two basketball Hall of Famers, Lew Alcindor(now known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar) and Bill Walton. babranski Posted March 19, 2005 Author Posted March 19, 2005 UCLA was a phenom, you are correct. But what are they now? Wooden wasn't a basketball coach, he was a recruiter. He recruited the best prospects and just gave them a nudge. You UCLA fans cling desperatly to that great era like it means something, when in fact it means didley squat today. UNC and Duke will both eventually pass every record set by UCLA, while UCLA themselves will continue to either not make the tournament at all, or lose in the first round (like this year). Quote
