Interview
By Rickie Ashman
Sitting down to chat with Chris Colton, model and local jazz composer, the scene was quintessentially New York: a radio mounted on the wall of a West Village pizzeria played back hits from John Coltrane and other legends.
Born and raised in Downtown Manhattan, Colton, who recently tried some of our new winter styles, began modeling as a way to develop his public image. Scouted on Green Street in SoHo, Colton has modeled for Prada, Gap, Nylon Guys and even Vogue - not to mention - he's in the process of releasing his first jazz album.
"Music I write now is more fusion, more power-chords…open sounding, odd time signatures. Like if Nirvana played jazz. More grunge inspired."
Colton, a fan of the Kånken bag since its appearance in the New York scene three years ago (via Opening Ceremony), first noticed the Kånken on a train into the city. After seeing the bag again one day at school, he stopped a fellow student walking to the cafeteria, and asked him where he got it.
“I really like the logo, kind of stamp-like; it was the bright-colored logo that actually got me."
Colton describes the Kånken as a nice, simple bag - small and convenient enough for the city. "It’s the type of bag you don’t have to try to blend with an outfit. It can just stand on its own," he says.
"Fjällräven embodies Swedish design, which is pretty cool," he continues. "North Face and Patagonia have their look, which is classic, and I grew up with them, but I wore them as a kid, and now I’ve kind of moved on. The European feel is a little more modern and edgy. Now that the world is more globalized, I think it’s good to integrate new brands in to one's wardrobe. Makes things more interesting."
Standing on the Highline, a park-of-sorts located in the Meatpacking District, Colton wears one of our newest bags from our higher-end Numbers series – the Totepack No.1.
“The Kånken is the perfect city bag, but I think the tote which converts to the backpack is something really unique.”
Made from a more durable, double-layer of our signature G-1000 fabric, the Totepack No.1 is not only practical for traveling, but will never wear-down. This harkens backs to Fjällräven's eco-friendly ideology that a longer-lasting product is better for the environment.
Colton concludes, "I learned about Fjällräven from the Kånken, but that’s not even the best thing you guys have to offer. 'City' and 'Outdoors' are definitely a great blend. Your 30L or larger bags are definitely something I could see on a train when backpacking around Europe.”
Whether you're a model in the city lugging your lookbook to the next casting or a weekend warrior planning your next hike upstate, from city to summit, Fjällräven has your back!

I love the way he looks geeky one moment and so sexy the next. And he certainly knows he's sexy - flashing that tight little body, delicious treasure trail and tantalising show of pubes.
