Damn bitmaps! How to fix?

For some reason, al the pics and gifs that I try to save can only be saved as bitmaps. This just happened within the past couple of days. I don't remember changing any settings, and I'm pretty new to computers (very new) and am looking for any suggestions as to what to do. I's sick of converting them to .jpg in paint, and it makes saving animated gifs useless...

I figure that it's just a matter of adjusting or changing some setting, but I don't know how to do it...

I think hes refering to when click save as in Internet Explorer they save as BMPs. This is a known issue with Internet explorer, you can start here

Thanks for the link Maddog. I couldn't follow the instructions completely, but after deleting my temporary internet files, everything seems to be OK.
