Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island is an upcoming American dark comedy monster film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein, from a story by John Gatins and Gilroy. The film is a reboot of the King Kong franchise and will serve as the second film in Legendary's MonsterVerse. It stars an ensemble cast consisting of Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, John Ortiz, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, Thomas Mann, Terry Notary, and John C. Reilly. Principal photography began on October 19, 2015, in Hawaii. Kong: Skull Island is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 10, 2017, in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D and in Dolby Cinemas.

The uniforms and equipment are Vietnam-war era and there is a Nixon bobble head...so I'm assuming it takes place circa 1968.

Would seem to be the case.  The whole vibe the film gives off also feels like it's of that time as well.

Just watched the trailer that was posted on this thread.  I hadn't realized that John Goodman was in this.  Even more pumped for it now.  I was already on board because of Brie Larson, but if John Goodman felt that this was worth his time, then there's a decent chance it could turn out to be something worthwhile. 

I am just wondering if one day a group of unarmed nice Americans land on a mysterious island and find out the island is a safe heaven for extincts animals & Fantastic Beasts (hello Newton Scamander ) They decide to go back home to gun gun land and never talk about the island to protect the animals?
