She was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on December 3, 1960 as Julie Anne Smith.

Graduated from Boston University's School of the Arts.

Worked briefly as part-time waitress in Boston, MA.

She was on ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY's list of "The 25 Greatest Actresses of the '90s"

Chosen as one of People Magazine's '50 most beautiful' list [2001]

In 2003 she became one of only ten actors ever to be nominated for Oscars both as lead and support (Hours and Far From Heaven)

i just read an article on her..in school she used to be a nerdy, clumsy so called "ugly duckling". it just goes to show you that even the prettiest faces out there went through teasing and had their "insecure" moments. i mean look at her now..she's gorgeous
