Michael* Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 Anyone catch the beginning of round two yet? It didn't start with the same energy as S1 and wasn't as immediately gripping. I always think there's a lot to be said for the double premiere approach, and a show like this needs it more than most. By the time you've introduced and tentatively established four main characters, your 60 minutes is up, with very little interaction having gone on between them. I expect things to rev up and the story to be centralised a bit more as it progresses - it's easy to be put off by outlandish reviews saying it was rubbish after one episode, but my hopes for the season are still high. If there’s anyone in with a chance of enjoying a McConaissance, it’s McAdams. The others seemed hampered a bit by obvious cliches. Gangster who wants to go straight, boozy corrupt cop, ex-soldier with a dark past, and so on. Quote
PinkCouture Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 The beginning of the first episode was kinda sluggish but it picked up towards the end. So far I am really digging Kitsch and McAdam's character. Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Thing is, Nic Pizzolatto has never shied away from cliches. The main objection to this new season seems to be that the supernatural elements are all gone.I found the opening episode underwhelming. Farrell's performance is good (e.g. his nervous behavior in the flashback when Vince Vaughn's character gave him the identity of his wife's rapist), but some of the material he is working with is pretty poor imho.I love McAdams but I hate the fact that Pizzolatto has once again framed his female character through a one-track prism.Basically she is into freaky sex, has daddy issues and has a porn star sister.Do women even exist for Pizzolatto outside of their sexuality? In his universe, their value seems only linked to their fuckability or how their fate might influence the behavior of a male character. Quote
PinkCouture Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 ^ A lot of critics share your observation regarding how Pizzolatto portray his female characters. I agree with you as well Quote
Michael* Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I understand the argument and don't disagree, but honestly, I'm not sure the men are faring much better. It seemed very deliberate that the first thing we learned about each of the main characters was sexual in nature. The early scenes involving Kitsch, for example. McAdams seems to have the most interesting backstory and hopefully, the rest of the script allows her to continue lending depth to the part. There was Vaughn's wife too, she seemed much savvier than him and more capable of smoothing things over with the various shady factions they're trying to court. S1's occult themes have been scaled back, but they amounted to little more than a smokescreen anyway. I would go so far as to say the payoff to the whole murder mystery was pretty unsatisfactory really, it ended on a weird half resolution with a decidedly tenuous leap of logic required to solve it. For me, the most compelling thing about the story was the toll the case took on the two very different detectives investigating it. I hope this new season keeps that theme going. Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 So far, Vince Vaughn's story line seems entirely ripped off from the early 1980s movie "The Long Good Friday".That is also about a criminal who hopes to go legit through a profitable land development. To this end, he also needs to impress and convince a foreign investor (the Russians in TD are replaced by Americans in "The Long Good Friday").Likewise, on the day that everything is supposed to be signed and agreed upon, key people in his organization start dying and disappearing. There were already accusations of plagiarism during season one, I hope we don't get a repeat of that this year. Lyla Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Stolen or not, that storyline is totally boring for me. Just like Rachel's. Taylor is ok, but somehow I was annoyed by his face, lol. Colin had some nice scene, and his character is the most interesting one imo or he played the best... The show lacks the great atmosphere too so far, previous season had it from the first scene and intro and all... But I won't give up on it, i think it will be better. Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 So was anyone else reminded of Colonel Chestbridge? Quote
Michael* Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I couldn't quite put my finger on what it reminded me of at the time, but that's exactly it. Weekend At Bernie's last week, now this. Who says Pizzolatto doesn't have a sense of humour? Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 There's no way that Ray is dead, right? Since there is no way that he would just walk away from two such shotgun blasts to the chest, I'm guessing the twist will be that he was shot with non-lethal ammo. Quote
Michael* Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 The lack of blood seemed to suggest that it was probably just rubber shells, meant to disable rather than kill. Plus, if the Birdman really was going in for the kill, you'd think he'd have just put the gun to Ray's head while he was incapacitated. Either that or the upcoming episodes are going to be unbelievably heavy on flashbacks. Quote
PinkCouture Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 ^ I agree. If Birdman was going to kill Ray he would have shot him in the head. Also, Colin is credited to be in 8 episodes---unless he appears in flashback from this point forward. Another thing, he seems like a smart cop so he probably was wearing a bullet proof vest. Quote

I don't think he was wearing a vest, I believe the top few buttons on his shirt were undone and there was nothing visible underneath. Quote
PinkCouture Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 ^ Nm then I still don't think he is dead but even if he was I would be ok with that Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 ^ Nm then I still don't think he is dead but even if he was I would be ok with that I think he'll still be in the show whether or not he is really shot. But I'd prefer if the rest of the season isn't devoted to Ray flashbacks. Quote
Michael* Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 It obviously wouldn't be the first time they'd utilised the dual time period ploy, I suppose they could do it again with a moustache-less Farrell. However, they've already gone into so much detail regarding Ray's backstory, much more so than any other character. He's the core of the show, both thematically and in terms of performance. Kitsch is still the most crudely two dimensional of the main cast so far, although I thought it was quite a nice touch to have Paul be the only one of the three cops who didn't react to the injuries on the corpse. He's seen some things, man, and some stuff. He wouldn't recommend it. Quote
PinkCouture Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 This is kinda related: http://www.bellazon.com/main/topic/49285-general-celebrity-gossip/?p=3735893 Quote
SympathysSilhouette Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 This latest episode was my favorite. It's got potential to be a decent season. They managed to make Paul a bit more interesting. Antigone is still my favorite character this year though. Quote
PinkCouture Posted July 9, 2015 Author Posted July 9, 2015 I thought the 3rd episode was very lame Quote
