Raising a racket Apple 18th b-day bash for Czech star

The Post's Marc Berman reports that rising Czech tennis star Nicole Vaidisova will celebrate her 18th birthday when Reebok throws her a Manhattan bash at Stereo Thursday night. Vaidisova, ranked eighth in the world, has become tennis' new "It" girl, and will be joined by Dave Matthews' Band singer Boyd Tinsley, former Miss USA/MTV VJ Susie Castillo, John McEnroe and Jim Courier. And word has it Andy Roddick, who apparently has a taste for the European tennis starlets, and Ashlee Simpson may pop in. Reebok is set to embark on a significant advertising campaign.

Vaidisova seals Czech win

Nicole Vaidisova defeated Daniela Hantuchova in a marathon battle of the No. 1 players in Bratislava to hand the visiting Czechs an unbeatable 3-0 lead in their World Group II tie with Slovak Republic.

Despite a mid-match comeback from Hantuchova, Vaidisova prevailed 62 67(1) 63 in two hours, 48 minutes to advance her nation to the World Group Play-offs in July.

Having stepped on the red clay of the National Tennis Centre in Bratislava on a sunny Sunday morning, Hantuchova, currently ranked No. 14 in the world, was about to face one of the hardest challenges in her Fed Cup career. With Slovak Republic trailing 2-0 after the opening day, everybody knew that only victory mattered for Hantuchova in a clash against an opponent whom she had never beaten, the big-serving teenager and world No. 8 Vaidisova.

Turning 18: Vaidisova’s birthday bash

Nicole Vaidisova has been making headlines in US papers this week not for her tennis results, but rather for reaching a milestone birthday – her 18th.

The Czech native celebrated the occasion in style, at Stereo night club in New York City in a birthday bash very reminiscent of another tennis starlet’s when she hit the big 1-8. Russian Maria Sharapova also marked her big day with an over-the-top party at the Hiro Ballroom.

As so often with phenoms who make it big, sponsors are more than happy to shine a spotlight on their charges and kick the PR machine into overdrive for any occasion.

That seems to be the plan for Reebok, which sponsors Vaidisova. The sports apparel retailer organized the birthday shindig on the cusp of a major advertising campaign featuring their new golden girl. Funny how Motorola did the same for Sharapova. In what could become a “Battle of the Blondes” (columnists and internet sites are labeling Vaidisova as the new “It” girl of tennis), this party could set up some competition off the court as well.

And no party at an exclusive night club would be complete without a VIP section. Vaidisova's A-list guest lis included former Miss USA and MTV VJ Susie Castillo as well as tennis greats John McEnroe and Jim Courier. And rumors are circulating that Andy Roddick, who was formerly acquainted with the brand, was expected to turn up. Wonder what Lacoste and for that matter, Maria Sharapova, would say about that?

Maybe he wanted to be there for the music... Sharapova’s hip party featured Maroon 5, who serenaded the “beauty queen of only 18.” Not to be outdone, Vaidisova’s camp have secured none other than Dave Matthews' Band singer Boyd Tinsley, a tennis scene regular and aficionado of the sport, and one of Roddick’s favorite musicians.

For added star power, Ashlee Simpson was also a rumored attendee (Maria had Lindsay Lohan drop by her party).

The night is young, and come to think of it, so is Vaidisova, who at age 17 had already reached two Grand Slam semifinals. Perhaps her 18th year will hold even more in store for tennis’ new “It” girl.

I hate the Roddick-Sharapova rumors because Roddick even said in an interview he was seeing this girl from Austin and there are pics of her too.
