Torres press conference

"You know you'll compete with the best in the world once you play for Real Madrid"

Miguel Torres is very much aware that the only way he's going to accomplish his goals is by working hard. During today's press conference, the defender talked about learning from teammate Sergio Ramos, "one of the best players in the world."

Did you know that Raúl sleeps in a special bed?

The first I heard of it was what I read in the news. I've never been to his house and didn't know about it, but send me one if you want me to try it out.

Why might a footballer be interested in a special bed?

It supposedly improves an athlete's performance, but I don't have any proof that Raúl has one. I assume it helps him, and anything that helps a player's output is a good thing.

You do realise that you're going to have trouble playing on a regular basis, don't you?

I knew that the club really went out on a limb to keep me and that things wouldn't be the same as last year. There are great players on this squad and it's hard to play on a regular basis, but I am young and have plenty of patience. I have to work hard to convince the coach and take full advantage of every opportunity I'm given.

Does the rotation system benefit you?

It's important that the coach thinks I am fit and able to play. I have started finding my name on squad lists and little by little am getting playing time. All I have to do is train harder and harder.

Is it hard when Bernd Schuster only uses you as a right-back, where Sergio Ramos is playing now?

This year the coach only wants to use me as a right-back, when last year I played every defensive position. I can still play on the left, right, or in the centre. Sergio Ramos is the best winger in Spain and one of the best players in the world. I have to work very hard.

Do you think it's a little crazy to consider Spain the favourite to win the Euro?

No, as a Spaniard I have always thought Spain can win it. The team is comprised of great players. I think they are in great shape right now and that they'll be peaking when the Euro rolls around.

Your thoughts on all the injuries stemming from international duties...

Playing for your national team is always an honour, and we know that we are more at risk of getting hurt when we play more matches. Fortunately, they aren't serious injuries and they should recover quickly.

Have you thought about leaving the team?

You know you'll compete with the best in the world once you play for Real Madrid. Of course you will look for an exit option if you can't deal with the situation. I made a tough call and have always dreamed of succeeding at Real Madrid. I know it's hard to compete against Sergio and Michel because they are both elite players. I have to continue working hard and taking advantage of the opportunities I get.
