Well, when I used a qwerty keyboard with a UNIX system I did as follows: press alt+the accent u want and then press the letter.

Example: alt+' then e gives an é

PS: Maybe it was alt+e and then ', i don't remember <_<

U can try to press alt and a numerical code (like 123) and then release alt. It may work, but that's not sure.

On my comp (a mac) when I type alt+e it gives me the ' and then i type e (without alt) and it gives me the é.
