well since I have been a Mariah fan since the very beginning, I can tell you it was simply an "exhaustion" breakdown. The woman was non-stop in her music and career from 1990-2001 (the time of her "breakdown") she literally was just so tired and overworked,. She never took one break from recording and she was the #1 music artist of the 90's! so you can maybe imagine how that could take it's toll overtime without ANY break! It wasn't because she was psycho or anything but of course the media liked to make it that way. She had to just take some rest. and than I think the catalyst of her "breakdown" was having a first album that bombed (Glitter) so after that she just wanted to take a break.
