COLOGNE, Germany -- Berlin's Cinema for Peace gala has signed up its first A-list attendee, with Leonardo DiCaprio scheduled to attend the Feb. 9 event.

DiCaprio will use the black-tie party as a platform to promote awareness of environmental issues.

Now in its eighth year, the Cinema for Peace gala has always been a forum for celebrity proselytizing. Nicole Kidman attended the event under the auspices of a United Nations campaign protesting violence against women. Richard Gere used Cinema for Peace to raise his favorite political issue: the plight of Tibetans under Chinese rule.

For Berlin stargazers, the gala also is the celebrity high point of the Berlin International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 5-15.
