Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire teaming up for Baz Luhrmans "The Great Gatsby"?

It's been a long process bringing Baz Luhrmann's version of "The Great Gatsby" to the big screen, but actual progress seems to be underway. TheWrap got the scoop that Leonardo DiCaprio and his best friend Tobey Maguire were in Manhattan last weekend to workshop the adaptation with Luhrmann.

DiCaprio has long been rumored to play the titular Jay Gatsby, but this is the first we've heard of Maguire being considered for the role of narrator Nick Carraway. In addition, TheWrap has also learned that "The Town" star Rebecca Hall read for the main female role of Daisy Buchanan.

Of course, reading for a role does not necessarily mean an actor is signed up for it. At least it seems certain that Luhrmann has decided to move forward with "Gatsby" instead of his mysterious musical project. When MTV spoke with the director last month, he was not willing to confirm that DiCaprio was his Gatsby, but it seems like that is the most likely element of the casting rumors thus far.

For those of you who missed the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel during high school, "The Great Gatsby" is told from the perspective of Nick Caraway, a newcomer to Long Island's affluent North Shore who befriends self-made but shady millionaire Jay Gatsby and soon discovers that Gatsby intends to win back the now-married love of his life, Daisy Buchanan. Illicit affairs, love triangles and tragedy ensue.

How perfect would it be for DiCaprio and Maguire to do a film together again, now that they're at the heights of their respective careers? The two are best buddies off screen, and have worked together in smaller projects in 1993 and 2001. Their friendship and chemistry off-screen could translate well into an on-screen bromance. Also, with her star rising thanks to a great performance in "The Town," Hall seems like she would similarly be a strong choice for Daisy.

To celebrate the forthcoming Blu-ray edition of the vibrant musical film and another of Baz's great box office hits-Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio - the 48-year-old filmmaker is treating fans to film clips that have never been shown in public before.

"Fans of the films will obviously be lured by the fact that Luhrmann has dipped into the vaults of his company Bazmark to pull out some never-before-seen footage for the accompanying extras," British newspaper The Independent reports.

“Highlights include Nicole Kidman's first vocal test on Moulin Rouge! and the first on-camera kiss between Romeo + Juliet stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.” Baz, who also directed Australia and Strictly Ballroom, believes the footage offers clear insights into the actors and shines a light on what their personalities are really like.

Particularly in the case of Hollywood hunk Leonardo, who played Romeo to Claire Danes’ Juliet in the 1996 film.

"It's quite wonderful to see Leonardo so caring for Claire, and how really beautiful it is. It's just a very beautiful moment," Baz said of the unique footage of their first lip lock caught on camera.Its would be so cool if someone could buy it and post the unseen kissing footage of Leo and Claire!
