Roberts made her film debut playing a supporting role in Blood Red. Her first television appearance was in the initial season of the series Crime Story with Dennis Farina, in the episode titled "The Survivor", broadcast on February 13, 1987. Roberts first caught the attention of moviegoers with her performance in the independent film Mystic Pizza in 1988; that same year, she had a role in the last episode of season four of Miami Vice. The following year, she was featured in Steel Magnolias and garnered her first Oscar nomination (as Best Supporting Actress) for her performance.

Roberts catapulted to worldwide fame when she co-starred with Richard Gere in the Pretty Woman in 1990. The role also earned her a second Oscar nod, this time as Best Actress. Her next box office success was the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy. She played Tinkerbell in Hook in 1991, and also played a Nurse in the 1991 film Dying Young; which was followed by a two-year hiatus, during which she made no films other than a cameo appearance in Robert Altman's The Player (1992).

In 1993, she co-starred with Denzel Washington in the successful The Pelican Brief. She also starred in the 1996 film Michael Collins. Over the next few years, she starred in a series of films that were critical and commercial failures such as Mary Reilly (1996) for which earned a Razzie Worst Actress nomination. She broke her losing streak with the hugely popular comedy My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), and eventually regained her earlier reputation as an actress who could open a movie and guarantee box office success. She starred in the popular 1999 film Notting Hill. That same year, she also starred in Runaway Bride.

Roberts was a guest star on the Law & Order television series, in a well-received episode broadcast on May 5, 1999 entitled "Empire”. In 2001, Roberts received the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich. Roberts would team up with Erin Brockovich director Steven Soderbergh for three more films: Ocean's Eleven (2001), Full Frontal (2002), and Ocean's Twelve (2004). Later in 2001 she starred in The Mexican.

Julia Roberts made her Broadway debut on April 19, 2006 as Nan in a revival of 1997 play Three Days of Rain. Although the play grossed nearly US$1 million dollars in ticket sales during its first week and was a commercial success throughout its limited run, most critics heavily criticized Roberts' performance. Roberts did, however, receive a Broadway.com audience award (a minor theatrical prize) for her performance.

Roberts's two films released in 2006, The Ant Bully and Charlotte's Web, were both animated features for which she provided only voice acting. Her next film was Charlie Wilson's War. Fireflies in the Garden is currently in post-production, with release set for 2008. It has also been announced that Roberts will star in The Friday Night Knitting Club.

By the end of 1983 she had secured a supporting role in the television series Five Mile Creek and four film roles, including BMX Bandits and Bush Christmas. During the 1980s, she appeared in several Australian movies and TV series, notably including the soap opera A Country Practice, the mini-series Vietnam (1986), Emerald City (1988), and Bangkok Hilton (1989).

In 1989, Kidman starred in Dead Calm. The thriller film garnered strong reviews. In 1990, she appeared in Days of Thunder. After this, Kidman starred in Far and Away (1992). In 1995, Kidman featured in the ensemble cast of Batman Forever. Her second film in 1995, To Die For was a satirical comedy that earned her praise from critics. She won a Golden Globe Award, and five other best actress awards. Kidman and Cruise portrayed a married couple in Eyes Wide Shut in 1999.

In 2002, Kidman received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the 2001 musical film Moulin Rouge. Consequently, Kidman received her second Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The same year, she had a well-received starring role in the horror film The Others.

The following year, Kidman won critical praise for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours, in which the prosthetics applied to her made her almost unrecognizable. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this role, along with a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA, and numerous critics awards. Also in 2002, Kidman starred in the stage play "The Blue Room," which opened in New York and London. The play was a stellar success.

In the same year, Kidman starred in three very different films. Dogville, The Human Stain and Cold Mountain which garnered her a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2004, Kidman appeared in the critically panned remake of The Stepford Wives. In September of the same year she played in Birth. Film was nominated for the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, and Kidman was nominated for another Golden Globe Award. Kidman's two movies in 2005 were The Interpreter which received mixed reviews, though it did become a considerable success at the box office grossing nearly $165 million worldwide, with its $80 million budget, and Bewitched; the latter fared abysmally with critics and made only $131,413,159 at the box office.

Recently, Kidman appeared in Fur, she also lent her voice to the animated film Happy Feet, which quickly garnered critical and commercial success, the film grossed over $384 million dollars worldwide. In 2007, she starred in The Invasion and Margot at the Wedding. She also starred in the film adaptation of the first part of the planned His Dark Materials trilogy of films. However, The Golden Compass''s failure to meet expectations at the North American box office has reduced the likelihood of a sequel.

She is also set to star in The Lady from Shanghai and Australia. It is reported that Kidman will star and produce in an upcoming Monte Carlo.
