In 1979, Locklear landed her first roles appearing in Tales of the Unexpected, and an episode of CHiPs a year later. She landed a few more bit parts in shows, including Eight Is Enough, before Aaron Spelling cast her in the role of Sammy Jo Dean during the second season of his TV series Dynasty. It would be the beginning of a highly successful long-term collaboration with Spelling who, the following year, cast her in the cop show T.J. Hooker. Until the mid 1980s, Locklear would appear as a series regular on T.J. Hooker whilst making semi-regular appearances on Dynasty. She later became a full-time cast member on Dynasty until its cancellation in 1989.
In the 1990s, after the failed sitcom Going Places and the 3 hour mini-series Dynasty: The Reunion, Locklear went on to play another of her best known roles, that of scheming vixen Amanda Woodward on the primetime soap opera Melrose Place. She was originally brought in as a guest star in an attempt to boost the ratings, and her billing in the credits reflected this. Despite eventually becoming a regular cast member in 1993, she continued to be listed as a "Special Guest Star" throughout the entire run of the series until its cancellation in 1999. Locklear also won First Americans in the Arts: Best Actress in a TV series for her role on Melrose Place. After the show ended, she was immediately cast on the TV sitcom, Spin City, opposite Michael J. Fox. Locklear starred in the short-lived drama LAX in 2004.
Throughout her career, Locklear has starred or guest-starred in Matt Houston, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Hotel, also by Aaron Spelling.

For nearly fifteen years, Stowe appeared mostly in minor or supporting roles in movies and on TV. A few of her performances from this period became, however, well-known to the public, as was the case for Stakeout (1987) and Revenge, (1990). In 1992 Stowe finally performed a leading role in a high-profile film, The Last of the Mohicans.
Thereafter, several major film roles followed. The next year, director Robert Altman cast Stowe in Short Cuts, in which she gave one of her most acclaimed screen performances as the wife of a compulsive lying and adulterous police officer played by Tim Robbins. The following year, Madeleine was a blind musician in the thriller Blink, co-starring Aidan Quinn (14 years earlier, she had a guest role as a blind painter in Little House on the Prairie). The year after that, she was a sympathetic psychiatrist in the science-fiction movie Twelve Monkeys. In 1998 she came back with The Proposition. She most recently appeared in the Jeff Goldblum Detective Drama Raines on NBC for the 2007 mid-season replacement. The series was canceled two months later.

Foster made nearly 50 film and television appearances before she attended college. She debuted as a television actress in a 1968 episode of Mayberry R.F.D. In 1969, she appeared in an episode of Gunsmoke. Although not a regular on The Courtship of Eddie's Father, she appeared from time to time. She made her film debut in the 1970 TV movie Menace on the Mountain. Foster made a number of Disney movies, including Napoleon and Samantha (1972), One Little Indian (1973), Freaky Friday (1976), and Candleshoe (1977). She also co-starred with Christopher Connelly in the 1974 TV series version of Paper Moon and in the 1976 cult film The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane.
At age 14, Foster was nominated for the Academy Award For Best Supporting Actress for her role in Taxi Driver. Foster received two BAFTA awards in 1976: Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress for her performances in Bugsy Malone and Taxi Driver. Foster successfully made the transition to adult roles, but not without initial difficulty. Several of her post-Taxi Driver works were financially unsuccessful, such as Foxes, The Hotel New Hampshire, Five Corners, and Stealing Home. She had to audition for her role in The Accused. She won the part and the first of her two Golden Globes and Academy Awards as Best Actress for her role as a rape survivor. She earned her second as FBI agent Clarice Starling in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs.
Foster played in Sommersby and in 1994 film Maverick. In 1997, she starred in the sci-fi movie Contact. In 2002, Foster got lead role in Panic Room. The film grossed over 30 million dollars in its opening weekend in the United States, Foster's biggest box office opening success of her career so far. She then performed in the French-language film Un long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement) (2004), speaking French fluently throughout. Foster returned in the 2005 film Flightplan which opened once again #1 at the U.S. box office and was a worldwide hit.
In 2006, she appeared in Inside Man which opened #1 at the U.S. box office and went on to be one of the commercial hits of the year. In 2008, she starred in The Brave One, another urban thriller that opened at #1 at the U.S. box office. Foster's performance in the film would earn her a sixth Golden Globe acting nomination.
In 2008, Foster starred in Nim's Island, the first comedy that Foster has starred in since Maverick in 1994. Foster is currently developing a biopic of Leni Riefenstahl.
