i start this thread with Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 - 1610). i saw one of his paintings on Cole Mohr's blog (such a good surprise!) and it make me thought there wasn't a thread about paining.
i discovered his work in 2005 or 2006 because he is a big influence for my favourite photographer, Joel Peter Witkin

yes the picture and the paint are very similar but in same time this is not a big surprise because Gerard often plays in historical movies.
