Here's the relevant part of her answers:

OK, I have a compromise for the situation of people having more than one account -- not that we were looking for a compromise, but um, yes anyway!

What if I were to post an announcement (it would be in every forum to make sure people notice it) reminding people that having more than one account on this board is a bannable offense. If a member has more than one account and reports the secondary account to us within the next two weeks, we'll simply delete the other account and no further action (i.e. banning) will take place. However, if a member fails to do so, and we find out on our own that he or she has more than one account, all accounts will be banned.

Those who really don't want us to know they have another account won't say anything and if we catch them at a later time, there's really no excuse for them. They'll be banned immediately once the grace period is over. Those who, for whatever reason, seem to be unaware that having a second account is against the rules, will have some time to redeem themselves and report it to us.

What do people think?

Its just so hard to confirm that people really have multiple accounts. I don't get why say, Evny has 3 accounts all with 100 posts+ in em.

The only problem i see is most people wouldn't realize that simply by using the machine in the same home would mean they would have the same IP. Also if they are at the same company, or same university. I just think no one would come forward simply because they dont know they are doing anything wrong. I belive this would be a bit too harsh, specially if we are implementing this just to deal with enVy and them.

Yes, but if we do what Nicole suggested, it doesn't mean we actually have to start banning everyone we just suspect of having multiple accounts.

We still have the choice of what to do with the people who don't come forward yet are still suspicious.

James, I'm confused as to why you feel the need to constantly bring up the issue of people being in the same household/dorm/whatever, as if the staff has EVER just banned people with the same IPs without researching first :| As long as I've been on staff, which is what? two years now? that has never been the way we've handled these sorts of situations. And we don't plan to handle future situations in this manner.

This is intended to be LESS harsh than just banning people on the spot/without warning once we are sure they have more than one account, which is how we do it now.
