QuoteBrooke Shields For MAC
BEFORE Cara Delevingne was even born there was Brooke Shields, and MAC has snapped up the latter - the original brow pin-up, if you will - for its latest Icon collaboration. In the Eighties, when everyone else was all about spiral curls, blue eyeshadow and heavily-applied blush, Shields stood out with her youthful, wholesome good looks, and the new collection's focus on wearable nudes and natural-looking peach, pink and cherry shades reflects both her own beauty history and the industry's current mood.
"Brooke resonates globally, and she keeps reinventing herself. She's an ageless beauty," said James Gager, MAC's senior vice president and creative director. "She's also a mom, an actress, a model with everything happening all at once, like most modern women."
Starting out as a child model signed by Eileen Ford and going on, famously, to work with Calvin Klein Jeans - nothing came between her and her Calvins - as well as appearing on the cover of several international editions of Vogue and enjoying a successful acting career, Shields has certainly had plenty of experience with make-up.
"I went through all of my make-up, opened it all up, looked at it all and started to decide what of each product I loved - whether it was from MAC or some obscure brand I got on a shoot in Japan," Shields told WWD. "I'm so used to having my make-up done by someone else - this was really my first time to delve in personally, rather than it being a mask that's put on for a certain photo shoot. I loved being a part of the process and having my taste incorporated into it."
Of course brows play a part in the collection, with a Veluxe Brow Liner and a Brow Set gel, whilst the orange and grey packaging was inspired by the actress' New York home. However the centrepiece of the collection is a 16-piece eyeshadow palette, incorporating a wide array of nudes, beiges and greys as well as sheer metallic and purple tones.
"James [Gager] asked me what I liked best, and I just could not make up my mind between these two very diverse looks. One was this really fresh-faced, cleaner, daytime look and the other was much more vampy with a big focus on the eyes, and I'm both of these things," she said. "I like the natural part of myself, and I like the sexier side, too… we decided to highlight the richness of both of those."
Available from October, with prices starting at £12.
