The key, besides the film itself is the heroic and honorable stoic philosophy that is embedded in the script- it definitely resonates strongly with a lot of men and in massive contrast to what life is like now, and a reminder what we all gave up in exchange for a materialistic life.
I think that's why it's become a classic.
