With spring coming to a close and summer around the corner, that can only mean one thing...GARDEN SEASON! Thru the next few months I though I'd share a picture journal of the ever growing veggie/fruit garden efforts. Hopefully these posting will inspire others to take on similar efforts - be it a one plant garden or a full blown farmer John eden. Lets all take in the freshness that mother earth has to offer and eat towards a better life.

Current list of plants >>>Tomatoes (Roma, Cherry, Better Boy), Jalapenos, Cantaloupe, Watermelon (Sandia, Sugar Baby), Strawberries, Zucchini, Red Bell Peppers, Serrano Peppers, Golden California Bell Peppers, Yellow Crookneck Squash, Asian Cucumber, Carrots, Radishes.

WEEK 1

Looks amazing, Dave!

I wish I had a garden or a balcony at least to grow vegetables or herbs. Since they renovated our fassade including new outer window sills, I'm planning to buy a security system so I could get me some windowboxes to grow things:

http://www.vario-fix...enhalterung.htm

And I just discovered this website when I searched for the link to the security system:

http://www.windowfarms.org/

... might check this out as well

WEEK 2 - Fairley noticeable growth for all plants, including new tomatoes buds, flowering overall, and more sprouting

Jennka - thx for the support, maybe you should try something small. CarMELita posted some great ideas via her links.

CarMELita - Love the multi-level hanging garden system, makes great use of what little space one might have at an apartment, condo, or home. Too bad I can't read German, but for the most part I understood how the window box system works. Any particular product your eyeing more?

Ah, those little plants are growing fast, looking great, Dave!

I haven't made up my mind about the gardening "inside" my flat. I tried Tomatoes and Kapuzinerkresse (nasturtium ?) once, but had to throw them away because of small white flies ... I'm afraid of their return once I test with plants again ... Right now I'm trying with little pots of Basil and Parsley and they seem to be free of vermin for now ... I also have to watch out for my cat - he loves herbs ...

They´re growing great to see that!!

Unfortunately, we live in garzonka (everything in one room) and I have already too much plants and cactuses and don´t have another free space for vegetables

WEEK 3 - Sorry for the delay, here are the updated pics. Much noticeable growth now with all the vegetation, especially the squash. And everything is giving blooms like if there was no tomorrow. Sadly, looks like the carrots have failed. So I shall be sowing some radish seeds instead.

CarMELita - Mhmm, those plants are really picking up the pace this past week. Even the watermelon plants are starting to branch out now.

Ughh, sorry to hear about the pesky critters ruining your experience. I too had to deal with them munching on my pepper plants...BASTARDS! Ah, well there u go, herbs are a good way to go. Easy growing and usually pest free especially if u start them off as seedlings. Ahahaha, cat loves the herbs eh? Just make sure to keep some cat nip near by then.

Jennka - D'Oh! Well at least you have some vegetation going on. But maybe a veggie garden lies in your future? And if you had the chance to plant a few veggie/fruit plants, which would you choose?

Those pictures make me just

If I was to plant veggie/fruits, like if I had the chance (which I hope I will have once we have fenced the area around cottage) I would love to plant tomatoes, potatoes, herbs of course, strawberries and onion, garlic, maybe some lettuce but tomatoes are vital for me, so they´re going to be number one and paprika.

-UPDATE-

Added some Italian oregano, cilantro, and basil yesterday...we needed some herbs. All that was missing in our garden, and now we are set

dscn2201k.jpg

Jennka - Oh, nice pick on the tomatoes, I know how u feel there. It's why we planted 3 varieties. Nothing beats that vine ripped deliciousness that is tomatoes. Too bad I couldn't instantly hand you a few once they have fully ripened, I know you would make one heck of a delectable dish with those. I wonder now, what dishes do you usually make when you have fresh tomatoes at hand?

And as u can see...we have a few herbs now

Oh, and check it out folks...the peaches on the tree are finally ready for the picking over the next few days Already plucked the first official peach today, WOW, are they orgasmic good and juicy

Yummy they look so healthy and juicy indeed!!

When I have fresh tomatoes at hand I never make a dish because I eat them all in a minute I´m a tomatoe-freak, trust me. I eat at least 3 tomatoes every day, I love ketchup to death, and if I was ever to join Spanish tomatoe madnes I would drove myself in there - happy and excited

But I love to make salads - just tomatoes and cucumbers plus acid cream - yummy. Or I make a lečo - tomatoes, paprika, all rested on a frying pan, then add some eggs until it makes a mass similar to scrumble eggs Love it

Oh God you have peaches!!! I love peaches!

I only have tomatoes, strawberries and jalapenos right now. It looks okra and squash are on the way.

I have to replant my flowers. I don't think I will this year because of the twins.

Good luck Dave!!!

WEEK 4 - Blooms, plenty of blooms underway. Finally starting to see all the veggies buds coming in. Growth has been accelerating at an ever increasing pace and now every tomatoe plant aside from the Roma variety has wire rings to get ready for the growth to come.

Jennka - Yikes, you are a true tomato lover like no other At least your getting plenty of lycopene right? Nothing beats vine ripened though, I can see why you would eat them like candy. After having fresh grown tomatoes anything from the store is a crime to our taste buds. Ahahaha, well, something tells me that's on your list to do?

Oh...yum, a simple salad and vinaigrette sounds delicious. And the leco dish...sounds perfect for breakfast, nice idea there J

And just for you Jennka, a nice close up of the tomatoes coming in :brows:

COP11 - Amen on the peaches hun, beyond juicy, beyond delicious...I can't wait till the rest ripen Ah, well good to hear you also have a nice veggie/fruit garden going on. How big are your strawberry plants at the moment? And just do what u can for now. No doubt all the responsibilities with the twins might keep the full green thumb hidden for some time.

Tomatoes thank you for the close up, they seem pretty healthy for now

Jennka - Mhmm, just wait till they're at there full size and bright red...then you will be trying to bite your screen Ah, well thats one might kind neighbor you have. Nothing creates a better bond then sharing a meal/food with your fellow neighbor, lucky you are And ughh, those cherries sound right up my alley. Luckily we have some high grade quality cherries available at our local stores so thank gosh for that. Have you ever had cherry salsa by any chance? Oh wow, what an interesting concept for a salsa, almost sounded to sweet but the flavors...oh the flavors

And for our sweet CarMELita...some more peach shots :brows:

Are you trying to bite the screen already?

Oh...then I must tell indeed. Your best bet is to make it yourself. I actually followed a recipe provided by a well known health/organic grocery store called Whole Foods, maybe you have heard of them. Here is the recipe below:

Ingredients

2 cups sweet cherries, pitted and roughly chopped

1 jalapeño, stemmed, seeded and finely chopped

1 shallot, finely chopped

1/4 cup basil leaves, chopped

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Once you have all those ingredients in a bowl, mix well and let it chill for an hour. And this stuff goes DAM WELL with pork. Cook up some pork chops, serve this amazing cherry salsa on top...wow Jennka, that contrast in flavors is something to behold. That sweet tart cherry, mixing in with that balsamic and the spiciness of the pepper, then melding together with a nice juicy savory piece of pork...orgasmic to say the least
