-Colombian woman ends up in hospital after using potato as contraception- (you just can't make this shit up )

A Colombian woman who used a potato as contraception has ended up in hospital.

The 22-year-old went to doctors after complaining of abdominal pains, according to the Colombia Reports website.

The young woman informed medics her mother had told her that the potato would stop her getting pregnant.

"My mom told me that if I didn't want to get pregnant, I should put a potato up there, and I believed her," she told Colombian website HSB Noticias.

The potato had been inside her body for around two weeks before she began experiencing pain.

According to Colombia Reports, the potato had germinated and grown roots inside the woman's body.

The potato has subsequently been removed and doctors say there will be no lasting physical effects for the woman.

Colombia has a high rate of pregnancy among young women and the worst teen pregnancy rate in Latin America.

Around 90 out of every 1,000 Colombian teens become pregnant every year.
