Cannavaro: Italy Should Take Spain's Lead

Fabio Cannavaro wishes that Italian stadiums could be more like they are in Spain where the ultras are controlled and families and children go to games.

The Real Madrid defender is upset at the current saga blighting the game in his homeland and hopes that the situation will calm down soon.

In the Bernabéu, Cannavaro is delighted that people feel safe to bring their loved ones and believes that Italy could take a leaf out of la Primera's book.

"It is at times like these when I think I am fortunate to be playing outside of Italy," he said.

"We are giving ourselves a bad image of our football and our country.

"The Real Madrid stadium is full of women and children and with families and the ultras are very well controlled."

Cannavaro is also hopeful that the clubs, fans and authorities can use the forthcoming break in the league to sort everything out and restore some normality.

"I hope the break for internationals can help restore calm over there and help to reorganise things," he continued.

"It would be too much to stop the Italian team from playing though."

Canna happy to be abroad

Real Madrid stopper Fabio Cannavaro has admitted that he is glad to be playing abroad as Italian football is in turmoil.

With no decision yet to be made regarding the future of the Serie A campaign, the former Juventus captain is happy at the Bernabeu.

“I feel lucky to be playing abroad,” he told journalists. “I play for Real Madrid and they are a club with a perfect stadium where children can watch games without fear of violence.

“From abroad I can see the bad image that Italian football is projecting. We haven’t managed to control the sport that we love.

“It is absurd that someone should die trying to get to a football game.”

While the events of the weekend came as a shock to Cannavaro, he admits that he saw evidence of problems building when he was in Italy.

“We need to change the relationship with certain sets of fans,” he stressed.

“Too often we give too much importance to people who have little to do with the real fans,

“The clubs put up with too many of these incidents and I even remember interference on the training ground when I played in Italy.

“The people in charge must change things as quickly as possible as we can’t go on like this,” he concluded.

Italy's Cannavaro glad he plays in Spain

MILAN, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro said on Tuesday he was glad he now played in Spain given the violent scenes surrounding Italian soccer over the weekend.

Atalanta's match with AC Milan was abandoned when fans tried to smash a pitchside barrier in response to the shooting of a Lazio fan by a policeman, while trouble broke out elsewhere.

"I believe I am lucky to play abroad," the Real Madrid defender told reporters at Italy's training base in Florence.

"I play at Real Madrid, a club that has a perfect stadium, full of children, without violence. From the outside I realise the awful images Italian football gives itself. We cannot go on like this."

Despite the trouble, Italy are trying to concentrate on their most important match since lifting the World Cup in Berlin last year.

Defeat in Scotland on Saturday would mean third-placed Italy, one point behind the Scots and two behind Group B leaders France, would have to win against the Faroes on Nov. 21 and hope Ukraine beat France at home that night to go through.

"For us it will be fundamental to win and we know we are able to do it. But Scotland have been a real surprise, they have beaten France twice," he said.
