Real Madrid heavyweights unhappy with Casillas theatrics

tribalfootball.com - November 15, 2007

A rift is growing between Iker Casillas and several of Real Madrid's senior players, it has been revealed.

El Mundo Deportivo says many of the heavyweights of Real's dressing room have become fed-up with Casillas' theatrics during games - particularly when goals are conceded. It's claimed the goalkeeper never accepts personal responsibility and always makes sure the TV cameras catch him berating his defensive teammates when the opposition scores.

The dressing room is beginning to become divided over Casillas's behaviour, despite the keeper being a huge favourite of the Real support - which also has led to some jealousy from high-profile teammates.

Tottenham Target Casillas As Silly Season Returns

Juande Ramos is hoping to persuade the Tottenham board to spend €40m in order to prise Iker Casillas away from Real Madrid, according to an outlandish report in EL Mundo.

The north London have been linked with several star names since the Spaniard took over as head coach last month, but few of the stories have been as far fetched as this.

While claiming that the new Spurs boss is happy with Paul Robinson, El Mundo believe that Ramos wants to begin his revolution at the club by bringing in a world class keeper.

After vowing not to poach any players from his former club Sevilla last week, the new White Hart Lane supremo has drawn up a list of la Primera's best.

At the head of that list is Casillas and El Mundo have used an old quote from the Spanish national team keeper, where he claims to fancy playing in England, to back up their story.

In other interviews, the Madrid custodian has stated that he wants to stay at the Bernabéu for his entire career and even a mega offer is unlikely to see los Merengues tempted to let him go.

According to the report, Ramos believes that bringing in a world class keeper like Chelsea did with Petr Cech and Juve did with Gianluigi Buffon, is the key to building a successful side.

It appears to the spending power of Premiership clubs that has led the reporters to believe that Spurs will break the bank to land their man as they cite Sunderland's €12m purchase of Craig Gordon as an example of the cash available in England.

As if signing Casillas was not enough, El Mundo then round off by linking Tottenham to a move for Barça midfielder Xavi Hernández and Valencia striker David Villa.

While the English press have been stating that Spurs are after more modest prey, the Spanish media believe that Ramos is going to go for the big guns in his attempt to lift the club into the Champions League.

Casillas from Spain camp

The Madridista keeper asks for the Bernabéu's support on Saturday

Iker Casillas spoke to the press from Spain camp earlier this morning, during which the Madridista keeper asked that fans go to the Bernabéu in droves to cheer on the Reds in tomorrow's Euro qualifier against Sweden.

"I'd like the fans to support the national team, which also means supporting the coach in the same way the players do. We all have one goal, and it's to qualify for the the Euro. We all have to stand behind the team and its coach, whether we like him or not. Eighty-thousand people will have their opinions and I am sure they vary, but tomorrow the Bernabéu isn't a Madridista pitch, but a Spanish one. I'm sure we'll see Atletico, Madrid, and Barcelona fans, and they all want Spain to qualify for the Euro."

"We may qualify before we even play depending on what other teams do. Only a year ago did very few people think we had a chance, but now we have the opportunity to finish first in the group. We have to get it done in the Bernabéu so that we can have fun in Las Palmas. There's no better chance than now to take care of business."

"We might see [sweden's] weaknesses by playing on such a large pitch where there's more ground to cover, but there's no doubt that we'll struggle with their set-pieces. Our average height pales in comparison to Sweden's."
