Madrid rule Higuain and Khedira out

Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Higuain and Sami Khedira have been ruled out of Tuesday`s Champions League trip to Ajax.

Argentina striker Higuain, who played 76 minutes of last night`s 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbao and scored the opening goal, is struggling with a back problem while German midfielder Khedira, who was replaced in the 67th minute, has a hamstring strain.

Madrid have already secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League but could guarantee themselves top spot in Group G if results go their way this week.

Jose Mourinho`s side are currently five points clear of second-placed AC Milan while Ajax are a further point back.

Higuaín may have to have surgery for a herniated disc, after tests yesterday confirmed this injury. Pipita, Mou and the team’s medical staff will meet with a specialist to determine the best course of action. Right now, Gonzalo’s back is not responding to treatment and so other options are needed. If he does indeed have to undergo surgery, he could be out two to three months. The original Pipa, who went to the hospital with his son, told Argentine radio that it started off as a pain and got worse, and that the family is going to Argentina to consult with specialists and get a second opinion. He also revealed that Gonzalo had been playing hurt since the game against Milan at the Bernabéu, and that he can’t move normally at the moment. Mou also accompanied his beloved Gonzalo at the hospital.

Higuain ruled out for two months?

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain could be out for two months if a specialist confirms he needs to undergo surgery on his back problem.

Higuain, Madrid's top scorer for the past two seasons who missed Monday's 5-0 defeat to Barcelona with the injury, has been diagnosed with a herniated disc.

Madrid have agreed that the Argentina international, who has scored seven times in La Liga this season, needs an operation but have decided to consult a specialist for a second opinion before sending the 22-year-old under the knife.

Dr Carlos Diez, Real Madrid's medical chief, said in a statement on his club's website: "The player met with a specialist, the coach, the fitness trainer and the entire medical staff. After a period of five to six weeks, during which no improvement was seen, we all agree that he should have surgery.

"Now we must now decide what specialist to see for a second opinion, and if we are all in agreement, proceed with the operation. Should this be the case, Higuain will be unable to participate in sport for approximately two months."

Casillas, Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ozil, Khedira, Higuain, Di Maria and Mourinho make the shortlist

Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Seven Madridistas have been nominated to make the 2010 UEFA Team of the Year: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria. Jose Mourinho is one of the nominees for the coaching position.

Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos made it to past UEFA Teams of the Year; the goalkeeper won in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and Ramos in the latter date as well.

Besides Mourinho, other candidates for the coaching position are Vicente del Bosque, Quique Sanchez Flores, Dutch national coach Bert van Marwijk and Bayern Munich's Louis van Gaal.

The UEFA Team of the Year and Coach of the Year are chosen by uefa.com users.

Higuain to return in four weeks

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been boosted by news that striker Gonzalo Higuain could be back as soon as next month.

The Argentinean hitman, Madrid's top scorer for the past two seasons, was diagnosed with a herniated disc and has started a special treatment on Monday.

He was initially ruled out for at least two months but according to Spanish publication Marca, the 22-year-old could be back in full fitness in four weeks - if everything goes according to plan.

The news would come as a major boost for Mourinho, who is currently short of striking options as he continues to rely on Cristiano Ronaldo for the supply of goals.

Higuain is currently his side's second highest top-scorer behind Ronaldo with 10 goals in all competition.

Madrid's next match sees them take on French side Auxerre in Group G of the Champions League.

A reason to feel optimistic: surgery has been ruled out for Pipita’s herniated disc. He’ll go instead with the “conservative option” of medical treatment and kinesiology sessions. The first epidural yesterday worked, and lessened the amount of pain and inflammation. Gonzalo could be back in action around one month’s time, depending on how well he responds to the treatment.

This also means that he won’t be traveling to Argentina to get a third opinion (the first was from doctors at Sanitas, and the second from Dr. Cáceres). Gonzalo worked out yesterday in the pool at Valdebebas. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Pipita!
