And just to give you an idea of how strong the winds are in New York City alone...here is a complete failure and collapse of a crane at a project called One 57. This building is just over 1000 feet high( 304m).

It lasted one day, and it was worse during yesterday afternoon.

The entire region is shut down, but as of now, not too much has happened in my area except very heavy winds and rain. There might be a 'part deux' to the storm, but maybe not. What made this storm more mild is the lack of truly heavy rain or snow.

There's been the typical effect of strong winds- broken branches, etc.. There's been flooding (some of it quite bad) and power outages here and there (I have a backup generator, but power didn't go out for me), but I believe that they are 'special' cases relative to the size of the region and clearly dependent on whether or not one's very close to water.

Don't worry, as a long time resident of the NY metro area, I discount the press 30%-50% whenever they report on 'devastating' weather conditions that don't involve snow. We are not, traditionally at least, 'hurricane bait'. It is important for Major Bloomberg and other authorities to create an aura of precaution among the public as to decrease their own workload.
