My spin:

After 138 matches complete in this year’s tournament, we have now had 2 draws, and Chanel Iman has been involved in both of them! Bizarre. Chanel drew with Hungarian beauty Reka Ebergenyi this time. So, Chanel can claim to be unbeaten, but she’s also falling dangerously out of reach of Nina for first place in Group 21.

Group 22 saw two models improve to 2-0 in the Group Stage, as Elsa and Aline both had no trouble dispatching of their opposition. And in Group 23, Stacey Williams easily got past the youngest SI Swimsuit model of all-time, Monika Schnarre. In the other Group 23 match, the good news for Hina Tama was that she got her first votes of the 2014 competition. The bad news was that she still lost by a wide margin. Both Elsa and Ann improve to 2-0 and are tied atop the Group 23 table.

In "Group 36, Match 4" you can only see a bit of Monique's face.

Also, could showing the previous year's rank on the picture pages influence people's choice? Wouldn't it lessen the chance of bias if the previous year's rank wasn't displayed in the picture before each vote?

True about Monique. But, I only use photos from SI itself. Search through the history of all of Monique's (two) photos in SI, and you'll see that both are from behind. That one is actually the only one that shows even a little bit of her face! So, that's why I use that one.

As for the rank... you may be right, but maybe not. I will submit that there have been plenty of higher ranked models who get killed by lower ranked ones. So, I don't think it influences many people. Does it influence you? Honestly I'm just curious... not being a jerk. I often wonder what different people use as criteria for voting. Do they look only at the photos? Do they look at the rank? Do they look at the appearances? Do they consider everything? I'm not sure!

Besides, I use a lot of geeky math to determine those current ranks, so I like to use them in my Photoshop match templates. It brings out the inner nerd inside of me.

My spin:

Wow, where to begin? In Group 24, a.k.a. “The Group of Death”, Hannah came in for her first match and knocked off Tyra, the highest ranked model in the group. Emily also survived a good test from Andrea Orme. So, Emily moves into first place in the group… for now. That one will be very interesting to follow as the Group Stage continues.

Group 25 is one of the most interesting groups in the tournament, as the two top-ranked models are both much maligned. Both of those models, Chrissy and Julie, faced off in this match, and it’s obvious who is more maligned! Chrissy was trounced by Julie.

Finally, in Group 26, favorite Judit Masco was taken to the brink by the underrated Jessica Van der Steen, while Michelle Vawer rebounded from a loss to easily beat Annie Morton.

Oh yes, you are correct. I actually thought I had used the one I used before, where her head was at least turned. I shouldn't have used the one where you can't see her face. More importantly, SI should have the decency to at least show the face of any model that is used in their magazine.

By the way, the rankings displayed are not "past" rankings. They're current rankings derived from the models' appearances, covers, and results in previous competitions. So, there's a historical element to them (the previous competitions bit), but they are current. To me, it's like seeing the ranking of teams in a sporting event. When you pick the winner of the match in advance, their rank is only interesting, but you're going to vote for the team you think will win the match regardless of rank.

I don't know... I like the ranks there... they give the voter some more information for better or worse, so I'm going to keep them.

One more thing... a cool stat: The higher ranked model has won 117 of 148 matches so far. But, lots of those are against lopsided competition. So, if you count only the matches where the rank differential is 30 or less, then the higher ranked model has won 7 and lost 4. So, those lower ranked models are winning a good amount of the matches where they actually have a realistic shot at winning them.

My spin:

Group 29 had two favorites going into this competition: Daniella Sarahyba and Isabeli Fontana. They met this week and split the vote exactly 50/50, so they each get a point. Oddly enough, Jean Pelton now sits in first place in the group after her win. I expect that not to last, though, as she’s really just had two easy matches and hasn’t had to face either Isabeli or Daniella yet.

In Group 27, supermodel Carol Alt held off a nice fight from Ariel Meredith, and Louise Forsling got herself win number one in the competition so far.

Finally, Group 28’s results went entirely as expected, with Kim Alexis and Monica Bellucci winning easily.

Very true! The white balance and exposure settings on cameras - and in post processing - have thankfully come a long way. The thing I wish hadn't come a long way: SI's penchant for photoshopping. :yuckky: Thankfully, they toned it down this year. There should be none, in my opinion.

The shocker of the day is in Group 32, where Jessica White and Sue Peterson played to a draw. I thought Jessica would win this one easily, but I guess this shows what I know! Vanessa Lorenzo moves into first place in the group with her win. Time will tell if that draw comes back to haunt Jessica.

In Group 31, there was a very interesting matchup between Alyssa Miller and Chandra North. Alyssa prevailed by nearly a 2-to-1 margin, which is a very impressive win over the higher ranked Chandra.

My spin:

Lots of very close matches today! Group 34 had two of them, as Eva just nipped Michelle and Rosie slipped past Aya. The results leave the group table wide open, as four models have three points each, and the group is one of very few without a model having won two matches so far.

Up until today, 29 of the 31 groups with five models had someone with two wins already. As I mentioned, Group 34 makes it three such groups, and Group 35 actually makes it four! Shannan Click jumped into the fray with her first appearance this year and edged out Esti Ginzburg in another close one. That, coupled with Talisa Soto’s win, brings four models to one victory in the group.

Last but not least, Group 33 went according to expectations, as Jenna de Rosnay improved to 2-0 in group play and leads the group for now. Angie Everhart looms for her, though, so her lead certainly isn’t safe.
