I was thinking that they should shoot the bastard the next time they get him. But that could lead to that cops whole family getting killed. That's probably why they wear ski masks to protect their identities. They probably will just shoot him when they find him and there will be retaliation no matter what.

Over the weekend, I got to read a recent interview transcript of Edward Thorp, a mathematician PhD that became a legend in the financial world a few decades ago. He was one of the major figures that influenced a generation of card-counters and ultimately the movie 21. He ripped off Casinos across America with his mathematical techniques in various gambling games. He developed tactical techniques and eventually moved his activity to the financial markets.
Using his academic standing and the mass media, he was later able to publicize his achievements and help bring a genre of sophisticated gambling mainstream:

Thorp is now in his early 80s but is quite sharp and detailed in his answers. He is certainly someone with exceptional cognitive ability.
However, in reading the transcript- I am not entirely sure if he created his own legend somewhat- certain claims like Black-Scholes (
For those not in the know, the black-scholes option pricing model won a Nobel Prize) and finding Madoff or the Casino operators poisoning him/sabotaging his car sound too apocryphal /coincidental/solo heroic story. With his nascent Black-Scholes, certainly heavy option users like him would have intuitively understood the dynamics through personal experience, and have created their own, albeit less gold standard techniques. They just didn't publicize their findings to the world... 
He was the first to formulate an option-pricing model that was equivalent to the Black-Scholes model. Thorp had actually used an equivalent form of the formula to very profitably trade warrants and options for years before the publication of the Black-Scholes model.

• He established the first successful quant hedge fund.
• He was the first to implement convertible arbitrage.
• He was the first to implement statistical arbitrage.
• He was likely the first person to uncover that Bernie Madoff was a fraud—he developed conclusive evidence of the fraud many years before Harry Markopolos did .
