I first read it around middle school and it disturbed the hell out of me.  Easily one of the most scary things ever as a kid.

The AI for the Alien is really good, I wish games aimed for better AI like this.  Since there is only one alien at a time, they created a complex AI tree for it.  The AI detects sound.   It even peaks underneath the bed, opens up lockers, etc.  It also "fakes" out the player by suddenly popping into the same place after it left.
