Did you review Steak and Shake before? I seem to remember that you gave it a rating in the food thread, but I forgot.

So I thought this might be interesting to you, because I also went to the acclaimed "Steak and Shake" burger joint twice recently and had their "signature" and "double". This is supposed to be the 'In and Out' of the south. Their price is incredibly low- my bill was only 3.99 and 7.49 pre-tax w/fries.

They use the 'smash' method which is apparently gaining popularity.

And I've noticed that better low price range burger joints have been appearing as of late, as to challenge the establishments. They have higher quality burgers and better service at the same low price.

Overall, nothing exceptional, but a very solid, basic burger/fries and better than the fast food establishment such as Wendy's (that uses similar patties but frozen instead of fresh). My only complaint, and this is why I dropped a 0.5- is that they didn't have meat larger than 6 oz (which felt frankly, more like 4 oz. And I like thick, restaurant style beef patty, 8 oz. or larger) at the place I was at, and their signature burger had too much bun, not enough meat.

I didn't have their shake, but they were $6-5 shake quality at a $3.00-$3.50 price point from what I heard.

Shake and Steak 3.5/5 (just burger/fries)

A good comparison would be "Smashburger", which had inferior fries but better burgers. They also prepared their burger patties in the same manner.

Smashburger 4/5

Ahhh, a good burger review, I never get tired of those! But no sir, I never have been to or reviewed "Steak and Shake" burger before. Here below is the post I think you were trying to refer to on my burger conquests

And as to your experiences with this burger joint, I myself have never been to fond of the smash technique, for how thin and burnt the meat can come out at times. One needs to have a great technique and the right temps to really achieve that perfect juicy burger, but without to much of the surface area over charring! Had a few bad experiences in those regards. But the prices seem very reasonable. Up to par for the most part with In & Out burger Ughhh, and the bun to meat ratio...that must be spot on. Too much bread simply ruins what would otherwise be a great burger combo. That's why sometimes I will hollow out the bun as much as i can without breaking the integrity of the bread to balance out that ratio.

OH!...and the shakes, that's something I always love to try if any higher end burger joint offers them. A medium vanilla shake here plz! Do you have any specific joints that serve one mean shake that is hard to forget at mind and taste bud?

I don't know, actually. I'm lactose intolerant so I don't drink milk-shakes (I love milk shakes, milk, and ice cream though.......................)

As far the burger review: Unlike my trips to Smash, I made the mistake of letting them put on the American cheese both times- I personally don't like cheese on the burger unless it's blue cheese or something better. I find that many cheeses crowd out the beef taste so it really depends. In interest of tasting the meat, I should have removed it.

Anyway, I'm more of a steak person rather than a hamburger person. I find that even the best hamburgers only have medium-mild beef taste. Though I like a good hamburger, and sometimes I'm in the mood for it. I get it when I don't want to eat anything heavy, and want to eat something lighter for the moment. Like you, I prefer the traditional, short but thick restaurant burger too- medium or medium-well. To their credit, both 'Smashburger'/'Steak n'Shake' do make their burgers moist. But the beef is flattened & stretched too much, and it's too thin IMHO.

For lunch tomorrow, I'm probably going to grab a medium burger at this local restaurant of mine. Buttered bread w/only onions and sweet ketchup. I like it simple...:-)
