Out of curiosity Dave, I don't think I ever knew what you do, but I remember that you said that you like engineering (?).

How far have you progressed in math?  When I was a student, I stopped once I did Calc I/Stat & prob.

Recently, I have been aware that I need to get more general familiarity (not planning on pulling out paper and pencil or anything) with higher level math , so I have started watching a few recorded semesters on it and making it a daily habit.

Structural here. To keep it simple, I've gone the full on route with math such as geometry, algebra, trig, calculus, statics, so on and so forth. Thankfully many software programs nowadays take care of many of the complicated and tedious calculations. Computers are a godsend for anyone in the engineering, medical and science fields

I wonder, why the sudden interest in attaining stronger math skills?

"Why?" Says the Fattarian. Armed with nothing but Falafel and Discounted orange juice. But the Cattarian doesn't answer. When Fattarian moved into his bungalo in Greece, the small scraps of cat food are found. "A new thing!" Says the Fattarian, now armed with cat food. But where is the Falafel now? Then comes the pepperoni, the papparian.

That is however, engineering specific.  I mean, in terms of non specialty math...?  You know, like multi-variable calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics...?  I am operating under the impression that you completed many non specialty maths after Calc I like most engineers.

I have been rewatching lectures from Pre-Calc and Calc I, and anticipate progressing from there.  I already have a semester of Calc II/III videos.

^ If you're interested on the full length of math classes one takes you can go to any engineering school/program and all of them have the same general outline of classes for anyone entering the sub-discipline of structural engineering, easier and clear info that way so you know more or less what I took.

Have you ever thought about attending a night class or the such?

My purposes for watching these semesters are much different than yours.  I am a practical person, and I am more interested in the use of applied math to enlarge one's intuitive thinking for analysis and am more inclined to see what's relevant in the social sphere- as an investor I am not too interested in abstract theorizing because because I focus myself on researching history, competitive dynamics, strategy, management & leadership, social sphere &  incentives, organizational structure, accounting and financial data.  I am interested in concrete facts.

I don't have the time to get a degree in applied math, and I am not interested in the in-depth details.  Tentatively, I only want a general survey understanding of higher math- the key points and mental models so I can broadened my intuition and analytical ability.  Maybe I'll see areas that are useful to me, and then I could deep dive from there.

Stats, prob, and algebra have always been useful to me especially with software that helps with data analysis.  What I am most interested in is the degree in which understanding of higher math allows one to be more perceptive in a certain sense and enables them to organize their factual knowledge better on say, a day to day basis.

I did look at math prerequisites before.  I'm asking you since you went through it all and my motive, of course, is to see if you got anything out it outside of your job.  What were the most useful courses for you in this context ?  Given what I just said, what do you think would be helpful for me?

After finishing calculus, I have lectures on Differential equations and Linear Algebra.

A raw fish lover then. Some are squeamish about the prospect of parasites whereas others feel content as long as its frozen beforehand. I didn't think about either when I was stranded  . Well, I don't eat anything that I didn't recognize because I don't venture far enough for my fat storage and rations to run out anyway, so even taking a chance on poison would be ridiculous. I do eat things that are edible but that do make many squeamish such as bugs. Have you by any chance tried the Italian or Thai raw fish dishes? Though I do prefer cooked fish, I also love the taste of raw fish and am also generally more impressed with the plating.

Ah okay now I see where you're going with this. Honestly, most individual would be perfectly fine - including yourself, with a college level algebra course. Within that subject I would say contains a lot of relevant information one needs for daily life. Most notably (I can't stress that enough) I would say is the inner workings of loans, how interest is applied over a set amount of time from a set sum and the likes. It's amazing how bewildered MANY individuals are with how any of this work and the majority of Americans are either sunk with a mortgage for a home, car or student loans. So a better understanding of how these formulas work for said loans is critical in my opinion for people to understand before they jump into any finical obligation. You'd be surprised how many people don't even know how to handle a percentage in a calculation as in turning it into a decimal first If you can understand money I would say life for the most part is set.

As for me personally a lot of what I have taken has indeed paid off in many ways, paragraph above is one for instance. I've had other instances where I have helped friends determine what types of loads they were dealing with for an addition they are building and calculating exactly what they needed in place and most importantly how much material and what kind. I also have a good background in physics of course and good understanding in chemistry so all those told just come into play with so much of my daily life and choices. Heck, understanding the physical world should be another priority for the majority of individuals out there, ignorance IS NOT bliss!

If people eat processed beef, which is EVERYWHERE from these giant beef processing plants then I would say raw fish and parasites is the least of your worries And I can't recall eating any raw Thai or Italians dished with fish in it but I do eat plenty of sushi, that I can say yes too And as to insect delicacies, I've tried grasshoppers and a species of grub that was fried and season and I must say, not bad at all. Really had this popcorn vibe in texture and a salty, woodsy taste with some of them which is quite enjoyable and easy on the stomach. Did I mention packed with protein too for the cheap.

I just casually saw the word chemistry and that reminded me of how I once wanted to be an alchemist . I wonder how those guys would feel if they knew that one day the gold we could make from their formulas actually wouldn't be worth the cost of production. Either way, obviously it was replaced by regular chemistry a few centuries ago and it didn't end well , but the name chemistry just wasn't as cool for me as alchemy, but they needed to separate themselves from the conman image. I somehow found my way from there to food chemistry, botany and herbalism even though medicine man would have also sounded cooler

Good call with the meat thing but as we know, people's fears aren't always based on common sense. I'll avoid writing a book on that, but the diethylstilbestrol alone (which is in over 80% of it) makes it illegal to even import it to most countries and that's one of many things. Needless to say, I'd take the sushi over that stuff any day. Of course, I eat both the sushi and natural meats, but you get the point.

I suspected that you were a fellow bug eater . That sounded weird but in California, someone showed me flour made from dried, ground grasshoppers. It was awesome  . Someone made some cookies from it on Bizarre Foods one time. Good call on the bug protein indeed. There's all kinds of delicious worms, grubs and beetles out there. I like ants too. For some reason I imagine that you're also fond of the chocolate covered variety . Those and grasshoppers seem to be a lot of people's introduction to bug eating.

Look out Flo . I hope this doesn't count as spam come to think of it

I'd take the title "Medicine Man" any day of the week, that or "The Most Interesting Man In The World". Hehe, alchemist, oh the stories of futility on those who desperately tried to create nothing into gold Someone needs to teach them how to split the atom first

Isn't it quite unsettling that these vast food companies use so many chemical compounds to preserve this, stabilize that, keep the color here that aren't needed whatsoever? I understand the financial decisions behind such actions towards our foods but jeezes, when yoga mats have something in common with the bread baked in Subway you know you lost your way.

Well, I've been to Mexico before and they have a good bug eating population there FYI, grasshoppers were my fav Once you get past the mental road block of knowing what you're eating and look at it as sustenance it's not bad at all I actually don't find chocolate + bugs too appealing. I'd rather have something on the salty/savory side then sweet and decedent when it comes to bugs

Jajaja, no spam here as I have AT&T internet services

Ah, the Most Interesting Man in the World

In museums, he's allowed to touch the art

He lives vicariously through...himself

He once punched a wizard in the face

Some of them didn't even think they could make gold but were just trying to swindle people. They would have little bootleg magic shows with cheap tricks, take people's money and be on to the next town and never come back. The real job was to get a king on board, tell him you need all kinds of supplies and living quarters and a lot of time but that it will be worth it. Sometimes though, the king would get wise to them and have them seized or executed without warning   . The ones that did believe they could make gold or immortality did pour a lot of hours into their research though.

They may not improve the meat or our health, but they definitely serve their purpose of making money. The preservatives allow them to last much longer, the hormones allow them to grow up faster, no need to expound on the additives and hydrogenated ingredients. One of the most annoying things is that there's conveniently never 'enough research' to prove anything when it comes to this stuff either. On any other subject, the same amount of research would be sufficient. You would think that 6 year old's with underarm hair and bras alone would be enough of a case against animal hormones. I have a friend who is extremely allergic to MSG and before he figured it out, thought he had a serious condition. He changed his diet altogether, so it took him awhile to figure out exactly what stopped it. He was later told by his doctor that he was one of at least 1/4 of the U.S. that is allergic to it. He went about his life just eating meat without it on the label and all was well. After a get together one day, the symptoms hit hard after eating a salad. He couldn't figure out why because it had no meat and its usually added to meat (they listed on the label either as MSG, its whole name monosodium glutamate or even 'flavor') but it turned out that the salad dressing had it on the label. Long story short, we still need more research   .

Its hard for me to choose between crickets and grasshoppers. Well, grasshoppers are obviously hardier individually. Locusts are quite nice as well. I must admit that I don't believe in eating bees not only because they've been so nice to me, but it seems kindof like eating roosters. Speaking of choosing, which do you think ranks higher in fashion, Emily DeDonato's face (among faces) or Emily Ratajowski's body (among bodies)? I think I may have chanced my answer a couple of times. At first I said Emily D's face because I'm a fan of her's, but then I think there's a lot more competition for prettiest models than there is for those with the absolute best bodies. At least for me, listing top 10-20 fashion bodies would be easy whereas it would be really difficult for me with faces. Well, most have above average or good bodies even though most are discovered for their faces. You choose for yourself anyway. *edit* bandwidth exceeded, but you know what they look like   .

Are you talking about linear algebra?

Overall, (unless you are talking about something else) I am skeptical that many Americans can't have a basic understanding of compound interest and discount rates.  It is a simple concept, although I am sure that many have not spent the hours or so learning about it before they have made some serious decisions.   It's a long story, but I lean towards socio-cultural explanations (along with business trends) as to the larger causes of the last recession.  Americans are traditionally risk takers with money compared to other places.

Or you are talking about something else?

I have long suspected that a true, more complete and intuitive understanding of the mathematics of the more complicated bonds and financial derivative products rests on knowing higher math and being able to think in terms of functions.  Do you find this to be the case, and what do you think helped you in this area?

Ah okay now I see where you're going with this. Honestly, most individual would be perfectly fine - including yourself, with a college level algebra course.
