I later found out that adults were writing him letters too . He said, "The only difference between the adult letters and the children's letters was the spelling." Yeah, Pluto will always have a special place in my heart too, but I accept its demotion . I don't admit this when I got to New Mexico though . Well, I wouldn't deny it, but more specifically, I don't volunteer it there. I must admit that my secret man crush is Dr. Michio Kaku . Asian men are underrated (in terms of sexiness that is).

Random confessions I feel obligated to make in light of previous discussions...

4. I'm an animal lover, but have always been obsessed with rat studies . I've had a rat study scrapbook since I was a kid.

3. Though I may pride myself as the rugged southern outdoorsman, I am quite unnerved by possums with a back full of young. I also had to get over a fear of turkeys as well . Strangely enough, I didn't have to get over a fear of cougars, wolves and bears. I'm still not totally over the fear of wild boar on the other hand even though I hunt them.

2. When people I know from California talk about how afraid they would be of the southern outdoors, I generally don't volunteer that I am quite uneasy about the prospect of earthquakes

1. Though I pride myself on being able to make tasty healthy recipes and familiar looking foods and it seems implied that it represents my diet, my general diet most days is mostly undressed raw food . Some days its mostly raw vegetables, green drinks, fruits, seeds, pollen ect. with meat and dairy as the minority on those days but enough for my Vitamin B12 (I don't like taking supplements like in my vegetarian days). Then there's the more splurge type days where I eat more meat and experimentation with recipe days. Despite that, I must say that overall, helping people to find familiar but healthier things as well as trying to cater to some people's various allergies has worked out for me in terms of discovering new things.

Something tells me the children weren't the problem on the spelling

Smart has always been the new "sexy" Michio is another individual who I can listen to speak for hours at a time They need to have him and Neil to do some sort of science exploration channel, maybe Bill Nye too I would certainly watch it.

Hehe, rats are cunning creatures, good call sir Wild boars are NOT TO BE MESSED WITH!!! Those animals are much more vicious then people give them credit Thankfully we only worry about quakes every 15-50 years...take that hurricane prone areas! As to the diet, eat the cave man diet...if nature can't grow it then it shouldn't be consumed!

Whow, I feel like I even didn´t left home with all these science master-guys on this thread

btw, I´m in love with Amy Menzer. NASA.

I´m currently reading Carl Sagan´s book The Demon Haunted World. It´s brilliant on so many levels that it´s hard not to mention it everytime I can

Smart is the new sexy Jennka so get use to it in this thread! :brows:

And woot for Menzer...have to mention California Institute of Technology University of California now

And Mr. Sagan, wonderful read eh Jennka? If only pseudoscience wasn't so prevalent in the south and in politics here. My biggest fear for our country is having religious text being introduced to science curriculum When "certain" individuals label climate change as "the biggest lie of our generation" or pronouncing the earth as 6,000 years old...you know fear should be part of your general cause for making sure you stop these people from spreading their word.

I´d love to get used to it anywhere and anytime

Wait, you studied there? I think you never mentioned (and I never asked) about your school. Now, reveal the secret!

I have never been so aware about the dangers of scientific illiteracy before reading his book. It´s alarming especially when celebrities/politicians use it widely, not even talking about the general ignorance of public. And the thing I agree wholeheartedly on is the importance of children and their proper scientific education, kindling the love for science in them in early age and not discorauge them from asking questions and wanting to know everything about this world. I think every parent should read his book. I also agree that science is "written in our veins, in our DNA" - it´s the most natural thing for humans to do, so in the broad spectrum, I´m not really afraid about the future of science.

Especially all those pseudo-sciences only emerging because of insufficient support of the science across general people. We need to create a better future for and through our kids.

You know what to do!! :D

Well visit here more often since Joe will also drop in a few angry Pluto letters at times which are always hilarious to read

Oh nope, I know of it so I had to give them a WOOT mention

It's quite the topic here in the states and in the media, how US schools/students and the general public while we are at it are lagging in math and science and we have elected officials here, mainly Republicans, creating and making decisions on their "best educated guesses" vs taking in advice from those who study in the many fields of science That there is what scares me since these idiots are too arrogant to admit they dont know shit and they shouldn't...they are politicians to begin with. They need to listen to science advisers in the know and not carry out legislation for the sake of god or virtues Luckily as the millennial generation ages we are more and more taking back and fixing the stupid done by the past ignorance of the current ones in office and power.

Oh, I sent you a PM about my schools hun

I would really like to know how do you perceive (in general) science in your country - it´s development, opinion of general public on it, institutions, quality and especially teaching about it in schools? Do you think there is any huge problem with it - with or without solutions?

How about creationism being taught in school?

Schools in here - Slovakia - pay little attention to sciences. We have high-quality universities, but elementary schools and high schools are scientifically inadequate - schools mostly concentrate on languages than math or physics. Or it used to be like that when I was little - maybe it changed, who knows. Slovak children study for about 40 hours a week, that makes 160hours a month, no school during weekends.

For as much as I know, creationism is not taught in schools, though little attention is put to the evolution theory as well. Children should be definitely more encouraged to study sciences - nowadays it´s mostly law studies that give "prestige". However, I can spot more science-orientated commercial spots encouraging parents to have their children involved, which is great.

Well even though the mass media among many other entities spew forth that the scientific community in America is dead or on a great decline is quite overly exaggerated. Are there issue with how science is perceived in this country and its importance...yes. But I also see a huge movement in getting the youth of today to delve into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and we are working our way to making sure standards are being changed and evolving to meet the new future of tomorrows jobs and those in the know fully understand that a good background in STEM is a must to compete in the future global economy. Luckily our country has some of the best university and research centers that keep us on top of new technological developments and to this day there is still a huge stream of people from around the world who come here for an education that is rich in STEM. What scares certain individuals on that though is the fact MANY other countries are catching up to where we stand technologically speaking. And while a slight worry I see this more as silly paranoia since a growth in science globally only means a better chance of finding that cure for what ever ails us or that break thru tech to solve our long term energy needs among other technological advancements that I can't even fathom this instance. The only serious problem I see here is a under investment on not just money but the mentality of what science should be for us as a country and how important it is for us as individuals and our quality of life. We are all born scientist with our fascination of the world around us yet going thru the public school system in many areas does nothing more then beat that out of us and that there is a HUGE problem and it must be resolved ASAP

Now as far as creationism goes, I'm sorry but there is no room for the such! How can we teach what I see as nothing more then a far fetched guess as to what people many moons ago did not understand. To me that is one dangerous method of teaching and does nothing to answer the questions we have now. It's pretty much stagnation as one only has to look at what religion has done vs science in discovering the many truths about how our physical world works. Now I get the scientific method doesn't solve all that we have questions for and thus we have theories but the great part about that method is it always leaves room for growth as we discover new understandings of the physically world

So when all told and said, I'm for STEM and science to push us forward into the future and if I had the chance I would eradicate all religion from this planet. A bit harsh but that's my position on the matter.

This one is a great sentence I cannot agree with you on more !!!

From the post of yours I can sense lots of optimism for US science in future - which is very relieving I have to admit. I agree that the more scientifically-evolved countries around us, the higher probability of discovering solutions for our problems. Not everyone has to be a scientist - but a country cannot ask for more blessing than having a scientifically literate public that understands science, supports and promotes it!

The funds have always been a huge problem in the science world, especially because to get them you need to have a project interesting for government or public and most scientists just do not how to explain the importance of their work to the general public and politicians. They end up in math equations and people are like "duh, that is one mad science". Which is totally absurd, of course, for a great project to end like this.

The other problem is the whole image of government of how science actually works. They think that you only need to tell a scientist to discover a certain thing and olala - here we are, year later, with the super machine that you needed and wanted - but that´s totally of how the science does NOT work. Science needs basic data, basic research to get into big things. All huge discoveries were made by pursuing totally basic functions of how nature and the universe works - without basic research, there is no real science.

I´m usually very bitter towards religion, maybe because I was once a believer and I feel like it has stolen years from me that could be dedicated to the real things and real issues. If it was for me, religion would vanish in the next 50 years.

Sadly, there are still so many people who need religion, and if we would take it from them violently, they would either pursue it in secret or get to something ever worse (pseudoscience, homeopathics, UFO believers....) - I understand now that everything must be done naturally, that people must decide for themselves, THEY must be the one to make the decision just as I did.

The key is education and freedom of thinking. Children are the key

Jennka, the three are tees, at thinkgeek.com.  Love that place.

Something you said, about the key is education and nurturing that spark of "what, why, how"

I count myself lucky in that not only did my parental units instill the love of reading, but I also had teachers who, when asked "why" they would say, "I don't know, let's go find out together!"

My parents would do that too.

If I could redo some of my past, I would have fought myself harder and stayed in school and gone on to some sciences.  I still love learning, just not in the spoon fed way adult education is in the us. (I even tried online colleges...still like that.)

I'm not generally a fan of celebrity gossip. That said, do you by any chance know if there's any truth to the rumor of Tina Fey and Taylor hating each other? Sounds like a strange, random rivalry to me  given the vast differences in ages and professions among other things. Then again, if Axl Rose and Tommy Hilfiger can be rivals, then the potential for lame rivalries knows no bounds.

This post is worth gold. It demonstrates Sagan´s theory that by courageing children into asking questions or finding out about the answers, you can raise if not scientist, then a scientifically literate public (needed as hell!!) that is curious, intelligent and daring to think.

And that is vital. You parents must have been great persons, same as you teachers. And educating yourself for the rest of your life is just truly admirable. E.g. I have no university degree and gave up studying management because it was utterly boring. But I crave for knowledge, and I love books, and have been studying languages for years and never plan to stop. That is my hobby - learning new languages and getting know about how the world works. It´s fun. It´s addiction. It keeps my brain active and busy.
