Oh, Lily, yes! Her shots were precious, she´s extremely photogenic and talented - sheer sexiness in SI
I really liked Marloes and Bregje, though I can understand that general public can perceive them as weird and "too much". But I totaly loved most of them
I would definitely like to see Emily R. back (with better shoots and especially less make up), Gigi Hagid, Nina Agdal, Lauren Mellor.
Wouldn´t mind Sara Sampaio, Jessica Gomez, Emily D, Genevie and Natasha.
Edita V and Dioni Tabbers still reamain in my dream.
I love them as models I really do! Marloes and Brejge have always been among my favs, but something about the SI shoot with them didnt work for me, and it isn't really there fault. I say bring them back and try some different locals, makeup, etc. ![]()
Nina I expect her back no problem, possibly moving to cover status next year? She is getting quite big and popular in social media and among "men" lists ![]()

Maybe you did watch it whole - but the scene where the Red Bull is chasing the unicorn is the most impressive for a child - I can easily imagine how only this one could stick in your mind. I can remember how much it terrified me when I was little.
Yes, I did not even know there was a book
I saw the movie first, fell in love with it - and later discovered there was actually a book first, so I was like - I NEED to have that one. So I started to search for it, and I searched for it for one year and could not get it (it was long time ago and I wasn´t so experienced with web) - and they even did not purchase it in Slovakia or Czech Republic - and when I complained to my father, he prepared a great surprise for me. Under the Christmas tree, there it was, the first and foremost book of my life
He managed to have his friend in NY bought it for him and sent to Slovakia, it was the original English version and I have to say, NO Christmas present has ever been better than this one. I have it deeply memorized in my brain and everytime I think of it, it fills me with nostalgia and joy
That could have been too. I remember I was very little, so it's possible that I watched it complete and only remember that part. It's indeed an impressive scene.
Oh, that's a nice story!
Books are always great gifts. How old were you when you read it?
We can (again and every time you feel like it) talk about The LOTR
I can understand you passion - plus, talking about great books is quite a pleasure! Do you have any best-favourite charas from the book? How do you perceive the film version?
I just love those books! And others by Tolkien too, specially The Silmarillion; I even wrote a whole album inspired by The Silmarillion ![]()
Good question about any favorite characters. I've never given much thought to that, but I would say Gandalf and Aragorn could be some of my favorites, probably for the wisdom the represent (though in different ways) and all the story that's behind them. I liked the Hobbits too, specially Merry and Pippin, for the simplicity and joyfulness they represent.
There's a poem in The Fellowship of Ring about Aragorn and his destiny that I find wonderful:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
And about the films. I liked them a lot! Of course, the books are much better, but Peter Jackson managed to do a brilliant adaptation in my opinion, even with all the changes he introduced. Yes, there's some thing that are not in the films that should have been (Tom Bombadil immediately comes to mind), but in general terms it's a great work and does good justice to the books. What's more important, it gets the general atmosphere of the books.

For me, book is the best gift one can ever give. Hard to remember when it actually happened - I think I was already at high school. 15, maybe? Really don´t know
I´ve always been very passionate about books, reading since I was like 5 years old or so (Ninja Turtles comicses will always have a special place in my heart
) and through fantasy and sci-fi books I finally arrived to pure science books and science-popularizing books which now give me the same pleasure and sense of wonder that once did the likes of Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, Peter S.Beagle, Tolkien and others.
Now it´s Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Robert Trivers, Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin... and I´m only at the beginning ![]()

I think you pin-pointed the two strongest characters in the book - Gandals and Aragorn. There is something epic about them, isn´t it?
I have to agree with you on the film description - Peter Jackson really managed to take the best out of the books and more importantly, the general atmsphere of the book - visual part of the movies was genial. He depicted the Middle Earth and the whole Tolkien world in such amazing way that I doubt there is a person who would not be moved by it.

Oh, how could I not mention the Eagles???
My best fav characters from the series, including Hobit. I´m amazed and moved everytime they emerge in the story!!

Great to know you've been reading since such a young age! I started around 5 years old too, in my case some of the first things were Asterix comics
.
Awesome! I've read some of that too, particularly some things by Stephen Hawking, and I'm interested in reading more. Some time ago a friend showed me a book by Richard Dawkins and I found it amazing, I hope I can get that book and read it soon. I've seen some speeches of him on Youtube, and a Ted talk I think, and the guy's a genius. I also saw him on TV last year talking about atheism and I found it brilliant.

Agreed! They're probably some of the most epic characters on those books. There's also lots of history behind them both, and Tolkien does a great work with it. In the Unfinished Tales there's some of Gandalf previous history, and in LOTR appendixes there's information about Aragorn's past.
Yes, he depicted Middle Earth in a great way, and it's good to see that he is still doing so in The Hobbit movies.
Oh, and the Eagles are great too! They appear on The Silmarillion too, with less participation though.
One of my favorites parts and participations of the Eagles is at the Battle at the Black Gate, when Pippin sees them just before passing out. That moment was so well portrayed in the movie too.

Richard Dawkins is amazing. He´s a true biologist and can talk about it in such a way that you´re captured and lost in love. The first book that I read from him was The God Delusion and I have to say that it was him who opened my eyes totally (after Terry Pratchett kicked me in the butt with his collaborations with scientists during the Science of Discworld series) and I fell in love with science. I used to be a believer once - and the process of transformation into atheist was slow, but Dawkins´ book was the one that convinced me finally.
I know he can be very rough and strict and extremelly anti-religious and I can´t really blame him. He has encountered too much of idiocracy and I have that feeling that he was never that tolerant Sagan type
I cannot resist to adore him and his never-ending will and enthusiasm to fight for science and atheism. And his passion for evolution which I totally understand.

For me, Gandalf was always the almost-god-like character that you expected to save everything, a friend by your side you are never afraid with, a concentrated wisdom and charisma. Aragorn was the image of true king, powerful and kind at the same time.

I've been atheist since I was like 11 or 12 years old, so his talks and the little I've read of him makes a lot of sense to me. The only thing is that I try and prefer to be more tolerant, even though he gives good reasons for his posture.
For me, Gandalf was always the almost-god-like character that you expected to save everything, a friend by your side you are never afraid with, a concentrated wisdom and charisma. Aragorn was the image of true king, powerful and kind at the same time.

I really liked both movies, but it's true this time they added a bit too much into it. Some things are fine, since they are closely related and you can find them either in The Lord of the Rings or in the Appendixes; but others not so much And it changes a lot from the book, specially the second movie, even more that LOTR did. Both are great movies though and I'm eager to see the last one. So I definitely recommend you to read the book! ![]()
And I can tell you there's more Eagles to come, both in the third movie and in the book.
Yes! In the Appendixes you can learn about Aragorn's past and his story related to Arwen. It tells about his family, his parents and grandfather. It also tells about how he was raised by Elrond in Rivendell. There's a chronology too in the appendixes where you can see how old Aragorn actually is and where he has been through his life.
About Gandalf I'm not sure if there's much information in the Appendixes but there is a lot in the Unfinished Tales. He is a Maia spirit from Valinor, and the book tells how he arrived to Middle Earth during the Third Age along the Five Wizards: The Istari. He was the last to arrive, and apparently the weakest of the five. The other were Saruman (the first to arrive), Radagast and the Blue Wizards (Alatar and Pallando). I'm not sure if it's in the Unfinished Tales or in the Silmarillion where is told which of the Valar sent each wizard, but Saruman was sent by Aulë, Radagast by Yavanna, the Blue Wizards by Oromë, and Gandalf by Manwë and Varda, the most powerful of the Valar.
There in the Unfinished Tales is also the story of Gandalf meeting Thorin Oakenshield in Bree, which appears in the Hobbit movie. That meeting appears not in The Hobbit but in the Unfinished Tales. And there you get to know the reasons behind Gandalf supporting such a quest.

Since 11 or 12? Damn I so do envy you. How did you come to be an atheist? Have you been raised in atheist family or not?
I´m actually learning to be more tolerant. I posted a comment about this in Dave´s thread, so I´ll just copy and paste it there as well:
I´m usually very bitter towards religion, maybe because I was once a believer and I feel like it has stolen years from me that could be dedicated to the real things and real issues. If it was for me, religion would vanish in the next 50 years.
Sadly, there are still so many people who need religion, and if we would take it from them violently, they would either pursue it in secret or get to something ever worse (pseudoscience, homeopathics, UFO believers....) - I understand now that everything must be done naturally, that people must decide for themselves, THEY must be the one to make the decision just as I did.
The key is education and freedom of thinking. Children are the key ![]()

Oh my. Thank you for such an insight! You can go on as much as you can, tell me everything that comes to your mind about the characters, it´s such pleasure to read
I really like the character of Radagast the Brown (I can totally identify with him
when he saved the hedgehog I almost fainted

AND!! How could I forget!! Beorn, the skin-changer! That character deserves his own film. I´m fascinated by him. I mean, I could live with that man
talk about dreams, lol. If Bilbo or Thorin died in the end (which is of course never happening), it would not touch me as much as did the simple knowlegde of Beorn´s species being extinct becuase of dwarfs and he being the last one.

uff. I LOVE ice-cream!
Giving a home to a shelter dog has been one of my dreams since like ever
and having a pack - that´s even more than I ever dared to dream about. Dogs are legendary for their unconditional love
they never live in the past, nor in the future - they are all for the moment that has been given to them and that´s one of their best characters. It´s a gift. No man can ever love as dogs do
Do you know this famous dog-guy Cesar Millan? He is so inspiring. I have one of his books and everytime he´s on TV I watch and cannot stop. He also fights much against the stupid laws restricting the "agressive breeds of dogs" - as there is no such thing damn. There are only stupid people, that can make agressive ANY kind of a dog. Because dog would do just anything to please its master.
I can´t wait to actually move in there
I really wish it happens this year aleady. Yay. On 28th July, we have decided to visit the mobile houses center and choose the house. ![]()

Children are the key
The reasons on why I'm atheist were "historic" at first rather than scientific. The scientific arguments came later. But around 11 - 12 yrs old I began learning about history, and I particularly liked reading about Ancient Rome and Egypt too, and it caught my attention the many, many gods they worshipped. So, my reasoning was: why would all this people be wrong in their beliefs and christians not? Why would all their gods be false but the christian god be real? If all those ancient gods are indeed false, wouldn't then be more rational than just all deities aren't real?. Those were more or less the questionings I had at the time. More scientific reasons came after.
And no, my family is not atheist, they are Catholic, though more in name than in practice, they don't go to church or so. My mom is more of a believer than my dad too, but neither of them are atheists, neither are my sisters. BUT (and I'm really thankful for it) for some reason I was never baptized, apparently my parents didn't give much importance to it or forgot about it, but once I had the age to decide they asked me if I wanted to be baptized or not I choose not to.
How much of a believer were you back then?
That's the thing, religion is a need for too many people that is hard if not impossible to take it away. It should be a decision, but an informed decision.
What bothers me the most about some religious people is their denial at science and proven facts, and also that aura of "moral superiority" many of them have only because of their beliefs are "the only and unquestionable truth". And all the intolerance that comes with it.
And yes, education is the key, but I don't see religions coming to an end in the near future...
More Eagles to come
![]()
I can´t wait!!!!
Oh my. Thank you for such an insight! You can go on as much as you can, tell me everything that comes to your mind about the characters, it´s such pleasure to read
I really like the character of Radagast the Brown (I can totally identify with him
when he saved the hedgehog I almost fainted
) although LOTR movies did not dedicate much time to him. I´m glad he received more in the Hobbit
There's Eagles on the Silmarillion too! Thorondor is the most important of them in Middle Earth during the events of that book.
These are some illustrations of scenes from the Silmarillion involving Eagles, the first one is Thorondor carrying Hurin or Huor into Gondolin (the city between the mountains), and in the other you see the city and the Eagles that watch over it.

Oh you're welcome!
I don't remember that part of the movie
. maybe because it's not part of the book. Actually Radagast is not mentioned in The Hobbit, he first appears in The Lord of the Rings and very briefly. It gave me some good laughs in the movie though ![]()
Ah Beorn is another great character, I love how the giant bear was portrayed in the film. If the third film keeps things similar to the book concerning him, you may know a bit more about Beorn and his kin there. And I think they're mentioned once ore twice in LOTR. I read a really interesting article about Beorn some time ago, it's in spanish though, but I'll copy the link if you want to read it ![]()

I cannot resist ice-cream
![]()
GIVE ME SOME ICE CREAM
LOL, I know where you're coming from there Jennka. I'm an ice cream freak too at the moment
And the fact I shared that gif doesn't help ![]()
There is a reason they coined the phrase "man's best friend" when it comes to dogs
Sorry, not even cats have a line to top that one
I hope you do at least get that 1st dog to the eventual pack but of course watch out for those with socializing issues. Some dogs just don't do well with others just like some humans hate being around crowds of their own kind ![]()
Oh do I ever
I remember watching his shows a few times a bit back. Funny part, a lot of his techniques are common among Latinos from what I notice.
Especially his signature "SHHhhh"
But there is no doubt that man has a talent with the K9's
And I'm a firm believer that any dog can be a great dog so long as you give it a nurturing environment. I've seen aggressive dogs from chihuahuas to rottweilers so it really comes down to the dogs environment that predicates it behavior ![]()
Ah sweet, so much to see and decide on...good luck trying not to have a mini panic attack
And I mean that in a playful manner ![]()

Which ice-cream do you like the most? I love chocolate one, cocoa, vanilla and cookie the most ![]()
Oh, cats are amazing in so another kind of way. They are free-spirited, strong individuals, no pets
I love cats as much as I love dogs and when I will have the opportunity to have both in the future, I´ll be extremely happy. Having a cat at home is like having a partner (in a friend-kind of way) and having a dog is like having a best friend. I get along well with both
cats are adventurers
you never know what they´ll do next ![]()
Dogs are devoted to their master and thus they create a huge responsibility. To have a dog is a thing for life, especially because dogs are naturally social and automatically create a pack (no matter its members! Dogs can make a pack with anyone and anything, let it be humans, another dogs, cats and humans, sheep, horses...) and follow its leader.
And I´m planning to take two dogs at once, with the requirement of them getting well along each other. The best would be if the shelter had two dogs that cannot be separated because of their closeness - and I know they had such pair, but now they are not listed in the offer, so I do not really know.
He is latino, afterall, isn´t he? ![]()
I really like that the techniques he uses are concentrated around what dogs really are - from the evolutionary and biological kind of view. The pack organization, the dominance of the leader, the roles every dog finally adopts that are natural to him - these are the techniques I´ve seen in all the documentaries about wolves. He speaks to dogs in their language, where words are unnecessary and it´s all about posture, emotions, tone of the voice, physical contact.
What are K9´s?

Whow, what a great reasoning for a 11/12 year old! I´m astonished now ![]()
Is your country considered very Catholic? How do you perceive it? Your parents did a great thing to wait until you yourself were able to decide whether you want to be a part of this church or not.
I think that I was a very firm believer - I was a believer from heart. Since very little I remember talking and writing to what I called "Mr.God", and every night before going to sleep I had a little prayer to pray and I always did. My parents weren´t much of believers, they were both Catholic (and christened all their kids as Catholics) but never went to church and never talked about God at home. They also never talked about atheism either
we had a huge children bible at home and as I´ve read everything that I encountered, I´ve read it as well, then the Old testament, the New testament, but never really thought about it - those were just book and the deity I believed in did not care for them in my eyes. When I started to visit church because of my best friend, everything seemed so strange - this was what the belief was about? It was dull, so mechanical, there was hardly any faith at all.
I believed in a totally different kind of God. My God was everywhere, in every plant, in every tree, he did not partake in the troubles of humans, he just connected everything living. He needed no churches, no priests, no praying. Afterall, he already knew all of it!
After I got more into science, my God started to vanish bit by bit. After Dawkins´ The God Delusion, I understood finally that the difference between what was left of my God and atheism is none. It was not an easy thing to do though. To let go of the illusion that somewhere, there is someone who protects you and your loved ones, that when you die you actually do not die and live on just a different kind of life, the notion that all evil will be punished in the end, and goodness awarded, and that you´re never alone - all of this was strong.
When you end up alone in this world, with nothing to rely on, no afterlife to look forward to, no protection, no one to depend on in harsh times, this world might seem cold for a moment.
However, I accepted the reality. Afterall, I could not decide any other way - it would be a treason of everything I´ve fallen in love with - science, sceptical thinking, objective truth.
After some time I realized that actually nothing changed. I still live the same life, I enjoy the same happiness and same things that make me sad. Maybe the taste of the life itself feels more sweet now - with the knowledge of its´ final end, every day is a gift and every minute spent in the presence of people I like is precious to me. My goal is to enjoy my life as much as I can - I will never get another one.
The world suddenly opened for me in an amazing, wonderful kind of way. The freedom od thinking and feeling is overwhelming.
Who knows what will become of religions one day. We still have so much to learn, to discover, to evolve into (if the enviroment and space conditions will allow us) - we might be all better one day.

Yes, Chile is very Catholic. It's by far the biggest religion here, and in the highest socio-economic classes catholicism is particularly strong, so it's a church that still has quite some power in the country. What is considered one of the best universities here, or even the best is a Catholic university (I studied there a couple of years). There's the tendency as in other places is happening too, of religion losing relevance quickly in the everyday life, and less people is going to church too. But still, Catholicism is quite powerful here, and most the elites are Catholic and deeply conservative.
And yes, I'm very thankful that my parents let me choose, even if the forgot about the baptism in the first place ![]()
Such an interesting way to be a believer though! So much better and more "pure" that the church's vision. You went through quite an interesting process into becoming atheist.
That's precisely what Dawkins said at the end of that TV program I told you about: there's no other life, there's no one up there looking after us, so it's up to us to enjoy as much as we can this only life that we have and every moment of it.
I hope societies can evolve someday to the point religion will be unnecessary. But it seems unlikely in the near future. Not only because of people needing religion or some kind of beliefs or "spiritual guidance", but because churches and religions (specially the Catholic church) are in the end huge instruments of power...
The illustrations are wonderful

And yes there is, but not so much in detail though. They were the messengers of Manwë, the Lord of the Valar and lord of the wind and sky, and they came to Middle Earth to watch over the mountains in case Melkor/Morgoth returned. They were probably Maiar spirits, such as Gandalf and the other Wizards. And Sauron, he is a Maia spirit too.
Here's another article which refers to the Eagles and what they are:
http://www.elfenomeno.com/info/ver/8942/titulo/-Eran-Maiar-las-Grandes-guilas-br-
No, he's not mentioned. Probably by then the character didn't even existed in Tolkien's mind. I don't remember if the White Council exists by that name already in The Hobbit, though it's clear after reading LOTR that it was that what was keeping Gandalf busy, but Saruman isn't mentioned in The Hobbit, neither is Galadriel or Elrond, the rest of the White Council. Legolas doesn't appear either and Thranduil doesn't appear by name, instead he's only referred to as the Elven King.
But that's mostly because The Hobbit is a more "primitive" work by Tolkien. It was after that he began linking it more carefully to his whole legendarium. So those characters even though they are not named in the book, they do participate in those events, as you can see in the Appendixes and in the Unfinished Tales. With the exception of Legolas who doesn't become a part of the history until LOTR.
You're welcome! And that's the interesting part. I think is more of an open question and I guess we'll never know for certain what did he meant by that (in the book he says pretty much the same). I think only Tolkien knew the right answer. And maybe even he wasn't certain about it ![]()

They're by far my favorite band ever, I know every song and I just can't get tired of listening to them. Everytime I discover some new detail, or something in the arrangement of a song that sounds particularly interesting. It's always a delight for me listening to their songs and get marveled at the genius of those guys.
