Ja, exactly - first they create a hype and then no one seems to book the girl anymore. It's so weird! So many girls had a stunning debut, followed by 2 good seasons and then disappear. It's almost like the industry doesn't want to support the girls until they're established anymore. Of course there are just some even they can't ignore ...

I would love to start a street survey asking the non-fashion-addicts if they know any of the recent advertising girls by name - there are just no household-names anymore, I mean, everybody knew the Supers in the 90ies ...

As for Joan - I don't really care for her, she doesn't seem to be Karl's preferred type and I wouldn't have booked her for Chanel, but now that she's fixed, why not? She and Saskia might be an interesting pair (though I'm not fond of Saskia either), ... at least I'm curious!

I've seen Joan in an interview, she seems to be a really nice, hard working and down to earth person. Do you think she'll do the VS show? She did VS catalogue, didn't she?

This issue has been discussed for ages - supers VS nowadays models... and some designers themselves said the same as you - girl shines out, has two seasons and then... dissapeares. You see it´s more about designers these days than about models, whereas it was mostly about the supers in that time. But it´s a natural circle I think - there are just too many models nowadays, I mean, freakin´ too many.

It´s like there´s no more space for the supers... it´s not era for them. This is era of come-and-go. There are also a very few models who can do both HF and commerciall... and it´s mostly like the models don´t really want to be like the supers they are normal girls, just doing modeling and making the best of it as they can, but no celebrities really.

Still, I think there are some big names nowadays - just that regular people don´t know them, because, frankly, regular people just don´t really care about models. They care about clothes, they care about fashion... but not really models.

Oh, and why Karl? When did your obsession start?

Does this have to do with reducing labor costs? It sounds like it..

Ja, maybe you are right - everything has become so fast nowadays and creating a hype is so easy and people are always searching for what's next, newer, better, more excitement ... haha, I sound like my mother

I wonder why only VS is creating such a hype about their models, I wonder why there aren't more brands signing girls and promote them ... even here in Germany the VS cast is at least known (mostly due to Heid of course) ...

Does this have to do with reducing labor costs? It sounds like it..

I guess this has to be the reason - I mean, the girls in the 90ies had insane salaries, hadn't they? Maybe the industry (secretely or openly, who knows) agreed never to let the models hold such a power again ...

Oh, and why Karl? When did your obsession start?

Tja, that's a good question, I don't even know when it started to become an obsession ... I know for sure I didn't really liked his persona in the 90ies, what with him fanning his obese self, haha ... but then again I wasn't that interested in fashion back then either. As literally everyone back then I'd always had a thing for the Supermodels, but more in a OMG THEY ARE SO PERFECT - awe-inspiring kinda way ... I wasn't a fan, I didn't even think about which girl I like best ... it all changed when I fell in love with Laetitia Casta- and that was late, like 2000/2001 ... she came first, then came her thread at ChilaX (which was the predecessor of BZ), then came fashion&designers, and suddenly I found myself not only addicted to Bellazon but also with a bunch of other girls on the radar and worshipping the Genius that is Karl

You know, it's not like I love every single collection or photoshoot or collaboration, but he's so insane - with such a heavy workload I can't believe he ever sleeps! He must be a vampire, living on Diet Coke instead of Blood or something ... he's just out of this world ...

Your mother is right this is exactly the age of things used and things thrown out. It´s quick, fast, it never sleeps. It won´t last for too long, but it is happening now. And not only in fashion - it´s in every industry. 30 years ago, there were refridgerators that lasted for 20 years and more, the same with washing machines and other equipment. And now? You buy a refridgerator and you´re glad if it lasts for 4 years. The economy just have to spin, to move, it needs people to consume and buy new and new things. Everything is only temporary. It´s exactly the same with models.

I think VS knows well what it´s doing. They are making their models celebrities - just look at the fashion show and all the promotions - and it works. They are established company, people know them and love them, but still - do you think people would stop buying their lingerie if they´d thrown out Alessandra or Adriana? Of course not. E.g., they have now Candice, which many people who love Adriana seem to approve of. See?

[...] And now? You buy a refridgerator and you´re glad if it lasts for 4 years [...] It´s exactly the same with models.

... but seriously, it's true ...

See?

And with them being treated like celebrities (seen on parties, Papparazzi pics etc), they are closer to the Supers of the 90ies as many of our High Fashion girls today, but IMO with the VS girls being far too commercial to stand a real comparison to the Supers for there have never been models afterwards who could change between Haute Couture and Pret-a-porter so easily. Ja, so Miranda and Candice are getting casted in Paris and Milan, but it's just not the same class. And I don't been to diss the VS girls here, you know I looove Miranda, Laetitia and Karen were VS girls, and I looove the VS Fashion shows, they really know how to rock it.

I only wish they would cast Cintia to walk for them finally! I don't see why she would be at the casting call years after years but never make it to the show, are they blind? She's got an amazing catwalk presence :persuazn:

I'm looking forward to see Eniko though - oh, and Karlie's debut, she'll be SO amazing, I swear

I´ve been never interested in Karl or any other disagner that much - can you tell me more about him and his work? I think you are exactly the right person

Haha, I'm rather biased, I'm afraid ...

No, he's just such a great artist. People are always bitching about his photographic skills - or the lack of it, that is -, but I adore his work. Not that I know anything about photographie, but here's what I see in it: He's got a very cool and graphic kinda way to look at the model. It's not really about the body or the face of the model, it's all about proportions and even more about contrasts. While he was rather too soft in the late 80ies and too colorful in the 90ies, he changed more and more to architectual black&white pictures. I'd always had a thing for Black&White, remember those Lindbergh's from the 90ies? And Karl got away from the female/male concept, presenting a body without ... like "judging" it? And that's not because he likes to shoot rather androgynous models lately.

And that's how he does fashion too. It's mostly about shapes, not so much about color, although he's frequently soming up with unsual coloring. He ALWAYS got amaaazing details, you really should watch some Chanel accessories on youtube!

And he's so creative and working his ass off, I mean firstly he's got Chanel, you got SS, HC SS, FW and HC FW plus RESORT and PRE-FALL. Secondly he's got Fendi, SS and FW. Then he used to have his own label KL, which makes two more collections, so you get a total of 8 to 10 collections a year. Plus his various collaborations, jobs as a photographer, he's frequently publishing books, or designing homes and houses or boats. And he's like ... what, 75 years old?

Last but not least, I looove his kind of view on everything, taking himself very serious, but always ready to joke about himself as well, speaking his mind where others would be too shy or polite. To be precise: he's not giving a single f*** to anything but himself - but without being a complete arse for he's very into charity too but without boasting about it. And maaan, he's SO funny, haha with his talking like a racing car jumping from one topic to another, sharing anecdotes on the way of explaining his philosophy of life.

Ja, I guess you can tell, I'm all Karl's girl

...

Now that I think of, this is my thread, right? If I get my additional harddrive to work I could post some of my favorite pics here ...

Until then I'm going to share some of his quotes with you ...

"But if I have a lot of imagination, I could tell myself whatever I wanted, you know. I handle myself quite well. I'm kind of fascist with myself, you know. There's no discussion. There is an order. You follow it. "
"I like today and perhaps a little future still, but the past is really something I'm not interested in. So, as far as I'm concerned, I like only the past of things and people I don't know. When I know, I don't care because I knew how it was."
"I'm not a marketing person. I don't ask myself questions. I go by instinct."
"No, I'm not a French designer either. I'm from nowhere. I'm a European, old European is all I am."
"The iPod is genius. I have 300."
"I don't know Heidi Klum. She was never known in France. Claudia Schiffer also doesn't know who she is."
"Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes, or it doesn't."
"Be politically correct, but please don't bother other people with conversation about being politically correct, because that's the end of everything. You want to create boredom? Be politically correct in your conversation."
"When I was a child I asked my mother what homosexuality was about and she said - and this was 100 years ago in Germany and she was very open-minded - 'It's like hair colour. It's nothing. Some people are blonde and some people have dark hair. It's not a subject.' This was a very healthy attitude."
On Andy Warhol:

"I shouldn't say this, but physically he was quite repulsive."

Okay, those are not all photographed by Karl himself, but he uses to shoot his campaigns (the beauty and jewelry ads are mostly shot by someone else though). But I guess it's a small overview about his work and his collections ... as far as they contain a favorite model of mine or otherwise I stumbled upon it in the internet. I'm almost saving every pic I find on him and his work ^^

I feel bad for not providing the sources, mostly his thread at tfs and bwgreyscale for the ads. I'm storing the information I got in the file's names. Loads of love to the original scanners

You're just saying because you can't wait for Joan's ads, gib's zu

No, I guess I know what you mean, it's time to move forward. Though I seriously adore their work and love the way they get along with each other, I feel their story has been told for now. But I keep my finger's crossed they will keep working together in the future.

post-774-1320598393.gif

It will be interesting to see who will be the new muse. Isn't it interesting that he didn't choose Anja for this season's Fendi, but Natasha Poly? I wonder why - I can't remember if he ever bestowed a campaign on her before, I don't think so.

EDIT: The gif is from Chanel ss 12, it will be faster once it's fully loaded - they are so cute, haha

... but seriously, it's true ...

Yeah, unfortunately it is. But world is still spinning and people keep bitching, so it´s ok

I knooow right? Karlie I can´t wait to see her on the runway, she has such a strong presence! And don´t tell me about this Cintia nonsense, I just can´t simply understand that. She´s heaven like - red hair? Check. Great body? Check. Great walk? Check. VS idiots? Check.

Yes, the problem is, mostly the girls are "just" VS chicks. They are not known for other works, and it seems like VS can very easily ruin your professional carrier outside of .... actually, only VS. It´s not like they don´t do other things - sometimes, they do, but... sometimes I have feeling like VS can eat you if you don´t run away in time.

If I get my additional harddrive to work I could post some of my favorite pics here ...

great insight indeed thank you I like how passionate you are about him, I´m the same about Gisele

Haha, my thoughts exactly.

... and a recent one ... ...

Looking at a bunch of videos on youtube right now, how can anyone in his right mind not cast Cintia?

But hey, I've seen some previews of the outfits, they are getting worse by the years. Seriously, Miranda's Fantasy Bra thingy with the shell instead of real wings?

post-774-1320749055_thumb.jpg

Ja, I get, it's mermaid inspired, but they could've made a reference to a firefish or something alike to get a better wing effect IMO ...

... btw Karl's ss 12 collection was ispired by sealife, so all VS gets is a big from me for snatching the theme ...

Chanel SS 12

But hey, really, I don't want to diss VS, I'm totally excited about the show and all. It's just that I got the lingering feeling they don't live up to their hype (anymore).

Ja, I guess it depends on how you started with VS. Take Gisele for example. She never really needed VS, she was successful before and becoming an angel was only natural, more like a small bonus added to her perfect Vita. She always jumped easily between commercial and High Fashion and I guess above all she's a business woman and knows what she wants. Miranda is the same in a way - she cartainly wants to get to the Top. But though I do love her loads and loads and loads, I have to admit she's nowhere near Gisele's versatility. So IMO for her it was the best thing to get casted for VS, but it seemed like a one-way street for a long time. But now with the designers suddenly become interested in VS girls, it's Miranda's big chance to get a foot into the High Fashion branche and -tada- there comes her Vogue cover (or two that is, Vogue IT in September (?) 2010 and Vogue Australia in January 2011). And I guess Julia Stegner wouldn't have gotten her Maybelline contract without VS (or vice versa), so it was a good thing for her to become a VS regular to ge more attention in the US.

But I fear for some girls VS might be the wrong decision. I'm not into Behati Prinsloo, but she's a great editorial model. Now that she's doing VS it seems there are no editorials anymore for her. Same with Caroline Winberg, she started so promissing and then VS came knocking and now ... nothing but tacky stuff came her way (Guess ...). So I fear for Toni Garrn who got casted for the upcoming show ...

BTW I'm not fearing for Karlie's career, she'll do awesome no matter what, the only thing that could stop her is herself. She's seems to be so independent, I could imagine she just decides to quit from one day to another because she doesn't like to be a model anymore but rather wants to become an astrophysicist

Haha, and it took me soooo long to figure out how amazing Karlie is. When she started I couldn't understand why she got casted,... ja, she was tall, but her walk seemed so strange and with her "death stare", nah, I really wasn't a fan. Agee@tfs desribed it very good:

"Karlie's walk and stare has always been her attempting to be sexy but it looked so crazy because she was a little kid and could not pull it off, so it ended up becoming eccentric. However in recent months she has grown into the bombshell that her hot little self has been playacting at since her debut."

- exactly my feelings! But during 2009 I found myself becoming more and more interested and had to admit my growing respect for her. And to my utter amazement I fell in love with her during the ss 2010 collections

Yeah, she is simply gorgeous. Great walk, and those hips

Maybe VS will surprise us

Karlie took her time to grow on me as well... at first I wasn´t really blowned away by her, but with some time... she really grew on me, now I find her simply endearing, so full of personality, so sexy at the same time (she is too skinny for my taste mostly, but still sexy!!) with her attitude, just... whow. And you said it great, I don´t fear about her carrier too if she chose to be an astrophysicist she would make it

Yes, Gisele is a great example of a successfull model - both in high fashion and commercial... and she, too, left VS (God knows why, I think it was because she needed to move to another step). I like Miranda a lot, and Candice too - and I appreciate their attendings of HF shows and working for great brands aside from VS, but they still tend to be more commercial than HF (which is not bad!!) - just saying. But I think they can make it

Love Behati, but she really seem to be doing more VS than other work - but thanks God, she still IS doing things other than VS. If you take Channel - before VS she was much more versatile, doing a lots of shows and editorials, and now... but I don´t really dear about these two - they are independent and full of life (and Behati is full of gorgeous personality as well) so I think they will be fine

Oh, it definitely surprised me - you had a better eye then me - the outfits weren't so horrible, even Miranda's "wings" didn't look half as bad as I imagined - and Karlie looked extremely stunning in that pink one-sy. I'd seen the pics online at vogue (here's the link), but I only saved Karlie's and Miranda's from their threads at tfs ...

Dunno, but there are lots of pics and info here on BZ http://www.bellazon.com/main/index.php?showforum=91 - mainly thanks to Prettyphile

As far as I´ve seen, I liked most of the outfits sometimes they really ruined a great outfit by adding illogical things to it, but... I think it was great. Amazing wings and wonderful newcomers
