So I searched youtube and look what I found!:

They did splendid design work here.

Also,

What happens to Fink? (the industrialist?) I can't find his fate in youtube. Booker goes far to get an interview with him, but I don't know (if) he actually meets him. Also, where is the politician? Was he taken out of the game?

http://bioshock.wiki...iki/Saltonstall

What was the songbird? Was there background behind it? It didn't play as large of a role as I thought it would.

The story is fully appropriate & with a mindf*uck ending. I like the first 1/4th of it the best. The peacetime areas with Colombia city and the beaches in the sky are my favorite. Gorgeous, and more befitting a Pixar film and resembling a visit to Disney world/Six Flags amusement park than a game. The activities of the people in the streets and the shops are all of interest. So it's very 'Shenmue'-ish- where the designers succeed both here and there in crafting a society.

The other 3/4th (wartime Colombia) has less substance (found myself skipping a lot of it), and more filler 'bang-bang-bang' but the whole thing is still 5/5. Excellent game.

On a related note, I wished they did a 'peacetime' Rapture in the first BS. I've always wondered what that would be...and the juxtaposition and transitional period between the two would have been very welcome to see.

^I've played through a few hours now, and it really is an exquisite game. The level of detail, effort and artistry is stunning, not to mention the actual gameplay being a blast - I'm so glad it's lived up to the expectations so far. I've waited so long for this game

They've managed to recreate the same level of wonder, fascination and anticipation as there was stepping into Rapture for the first time, which is saying a lot.

I know what you mean about Rapture in its prime. There was a little glimpse of it somewhere in Bioshock 2, but not really much. Sadly I don't think there'll be any more Rapture any time soon.

Also, forgot to answer this earlier..

What's this? But aren't free games poorly designed?

No, not at all - there are some free games that are very well designed indeed, just as there are some awfully designed ones that publishers charge for. It really depends on the developer, and how it's all put together. Like I said though, it's really only certain types of game that can successfully run with that model.

What is the beach in battleship bay? Is it an artificial pool? I don't really get how that is supposed to work. Did you encounter the cult yet?

How was bioshock 2 btw? I also did my youtube scrubbing over it, but I found it very underwhelming and didn't really watch too much.

I like this norman rockwell inspired piece:

I know what you mean about Rapture in its prime. There was a little glimpse of it somewhere in Bioshock 2, but not really much. Sadly I don't think there'll be any more Rapture any time soon.

The thing with Rapture was that it resembled to interior of a very large Art Deco influenced....shopping mall complex, hospital, hotel, theater, etc. I loved the 1950s homages. But unfortunately it didn't resemble the streets of a city- everything was connected together.

I recently reviewed a little of Rapture's beginning to refresh my memory and I was more impressed with the 'creepiness' that they were able to construct. The audiologs in the original were better and more extensive than the ones in infinite, and absolutely essential. They are clues to a puzzle, and they keep you thinking and observing the ruins. So it was intellectually simulating.

But the first 1/4 of Bioshock infinite succeeds a great deal more in creating a living, breathing fictional city. The physical surroundings in Rapture are very dry in comparison. In Bioshock infinite, it's all there- down to the details in the streets and the trees. Decay doesn't come until the second half.

My only caveat is that I wished that they cut the length of the game in half, and just extended the very high quality of the first 1/4th!

I haven't run into the Vox yet.. I'm playing it through really slowly. I don't really know what the deal with the beach is.. it was just falling of the edge in a big waterfall. I assume it's just going around in a big cycle with pumps. Doesn't really seem feasible, but the image is worth it

Bioshock 2 was an extraordinary game too, I guess just not as unique an experience as 1 or 3.. especially if you're just watching and not playing. The gameplay was more refined, varied and a bit more fun all round, but the characters (while still good, and very well acted) just weren't as memorable. The story was still interesting, but it seemed something of an afterthought rather than being a perfect melding with the same universe as the first game.

I agree with all you said about Rapture vs Columbia, except the bit about the game's length

Side note too - I like the original design of Elizabeth a lot more, with the corset and short hair.

There is 'the order of the raven'. It's a ku klux klan-like cult that worships John Wilks Booth for killing Lincoln (the devil). You get to explore the mansion that they occupy.

I find the fighting in Bioshock games to be rather generic.

The story takes place in 1912 but there are clearly small arms that are draw from the Great war or later. (with storied histories)

The revolver is the Colt Single-action army. (classic wild west revolver)

The other pistol is the Mauser C-96 (used most by Germany in WW1, and in china in WW2).

The 'carbine' is actually a weapon from WW2-This was the standard firearm for most 'supporting' american troops in WW2/Korean war.

The submachinegun is the MP-18- an elite piece of kit used by German stormtroopers in WW1, and then used by the German police post-war and even in WW2.

Side note too - I like the original design of Elizabeth a lot more, with the corset and short hair.

What's the original design?

Elizabeth is supposed to be a young adult, but they designed her to look more like a pre-teen and disney cartoon. This is contrast with the people in the city- which are drawn looking like real people. I found that contrast to be a little out of place although I'd admit that it makes her appear more 'supernatural'.

lol, what? How so?

In terms of the weaponry, Bioshock and Infinite (from what I've seen) offer the standard fare (pistol, machine gun, shotgun, et al), with Bioshock 2 adding a few more unique things like the drill, rivet gun and spear gun. But beyond that, between your weapons, plasmids/vigors and all the passive abilities you can select from, the gameplay is anything but generic. You can play through them games a multitude of ways and have a different experience every time. Bioshock 2 also added another dimension by adding more ability to lay down defensive traps and turrets and so forth. And then skyhooking in Infinite is another gamechanger, in terms of movement, coverage and awareness. It doesn't look or feel remotely like any other shooter I've played.

Well I'm sure she went through several, but a bunch of the trailers and promo artwork (including the Rockwell one you posted) has her in the corset/jacket outfit with short hair, rather than the blouse/neckerchief and ponytail she has in the game.. unless there's a costume change later I don't know about <_<

I read a thing about the design of Elizabeth the other day actually, regarding her cartoonish appearance.

"we wanted to exaggerate her facial structure so that you could see her across the room and read the expression she has on her face. Even at 1080p your ability as a player to look at the screen and analyse what's going on - that is tough," says Robertson. "There are so many things - a gun, the UI, combat, things to pick up, you're moving constantly. So the resolution you're seeing all these things at is diminished somewhat just by the pure choice you have in what to look at. So we wanted to give Liz a nudge up, and that's why she's hyper-realistic."

So having gotten out of work early, I picked this up and played for the last hour or so.

I have really enjoyed it so far, it looks gorgeous. I also like the intuitive tips (once or twice already I was briefly stuck when the tip more or less handed me the solution to my problem).

Mozart's Lacrimosa is the song used at Lady Comstock's memorial site. Good choice of music.

There are references to the Illumanti and so forth. I like those nutjob paintings that you can find in the mansion:

Outside of the skyhook feature, everything of signficance in it has been done before in half life. The actual shooting & running stuff is very half-life-ish imho. The guns are also unrefined, and not suitable for, say, a multiplayer like RO2.

The place where shooting games can show innovation is most obviously in artificial intelligence. The AI in this game is the same as those in games ten years ago . From a viewer's (rather than player's) perspective, the fighting is boring to watch...(sorry). The game's Computer AI just can't match real human opponents in intensity and unpredictability.

Elizabeth (I don't think this is much of spoiler) changes her tattered clothes and cuts her hair mid-way into the game. So she will be wearing that outfit!

That song fills the room (Y)

I can't help but be reminded of The Big Lebowski whenever I hear that though

Good thing they're made to be played and not watched then

Of course you can't match human opponents, but you don't need to if the gameplay and mechanics are strong enough, and the AI still decent enough to require a challenge.. particularly when different types of enemies are combined together in the same fight.

Having played both series extensively, Half Life and Bioshock don't feel anything like one another to me. I agree the gunplay was not particularly refined, especially in the first Bioshock - it felt a little loose and floaty. It's gotten a bit better over the course of the series, but the feel of the weaponry still has remained fundamentally the same. It has its own signature though, and is part of the character of the game. Bioshock is not a pure shooter - not acknowledging the plasmid and tonic powers, and the range of gameplay options they offer is a misunderstanding of the game's fundamentals. With the right setup, you can be a beast with just the wrench if you want.

Elizabeth (I don't think this is much of spoiler) changes her tattered clothes and cuts her hair mid-way into the game. So she will be wearing that outfit!

Ah.. you know as I wrote that I actually started thinking that it was likely to be the case - I thought it seemed odd

I'm just at the point in the game where I'm back with Elizabeth after we were separated, and she is a bit worse for wear.
