That's what I've heard as well from talking with British persons who were adults back then. Thatcher favored the British financial sector, and helped push political process towards completing the de-industrialization of Britain full circle. Essentially, this was a repeat what happened in the US to the 'hard hats' in the 60s and 70s but over a shorter time frame. So many people lost their jobs and careers & in many cases had their lives ruined for the moment.

She was also a crude libertarian ideologue of the hayekian sort that coated her actions with the predictable.

But from the other perspective, i've heard that these industries were collapsing anyway in the 80s/global marketplace and were reliant on public transfer payments. So the nationalist minded (with no stake in these industries) believed that they needed a political type to remove public safety nets and allow market forces to shake-out noncompetitive and noneconomic concerns.

So some believe that "She brought Britain to the 21st century" while others believe that de-industrialization has ill long term strategic effects for Britain.

Oh, you're an Aries? happy belated birthday! Even though I feel similar about them-I like getting wishes and gifts of course but I don't wait eagerly for 'my day'.

Wait wait. Did you really start this thread in May 2012 and revived it only now? Do you want to tell us Joe, that we had a thread for Michael for almost a year and no one posted anything since then?!?

Oh my, anyway, we should celebrate! Yay Michael, congrats for your thread! Be happy!

(I know, these are pretty lame but I tried to use some football gifs here and these were the only ones that I had and found quite suitable here )

Thanks Layla, that Ukrainian kid gif never gets old. I hear congratulations are in order for you too!

I wouldn't say I'm the greatest lover of birthdays you'll ever meet (even if it is a bit like being 100 and wishing you were still 'only' 99 at this point ) but I always try to celebrate them in some way and of course, I appreciate every greeting I get. Where do you stand on birthdays, Mahi? Are you a fan?

Exactly, so much depends on perspective - she pretty much split opinion down the middle in almost every way. Her economic reforms were either facing a reality, ending the British reliance on coal for energy and removing restrictive practices or bringing almost inhumane suffering to the poorest in society. She refused to bow to terrorism in all forms and was against conciliation. Some might call that an admirable view, others might say it greatly delayed the improved situation we have in, say, Northern Ireland now. She was fiercely patriotic too, which endeared her to many but irritated many others. Basically the Marmite of the political world.

...for August!

That kid was the best and lol@that Lewy photo. He's so funny looking to me... and to me he looks unnaturally pale.

Oh yes, I have to go to my thread now!

I'm not sure if you've seen it before but I actually stumbled upon Lewandowski's Twitter account when I found that pic. Some of the photos on there...

So, weren't you keen on having your own thread?

No,I'm not fan.I never celebrated it,I usually get presents, birthday wishes, other people arrange party for me,but always come as surprise as I don't even sometimes remember it,my last one was last 22nd March,I didn't remember until late at night and until people around me made party and others sent presents.I do only care about the getting older thing which has lots privileges and benefits for me,but I don't feel it yeay by year.

Oh, well happy belated birthday for March! It's funny, March and April seem to be some of the most popular months for birthdays - wherever I go, be it school, uni, work or anywhere, I've always ended up meeting someone with a birthday close to mine. November seems popular too, but that one I can understand as it's about nine months after Valentine's Day.

Hmmm, well, as a native north easterner, I'd have to say it's virtually impossible to speak positively about her from a political standpoint. She'll only ever be perceived here as the person who laid waste to the mining, shipbuilding and steel industries that were the lifeblood of the area at the time. But as with almost anyone in a position of such prominence, a lot would have probably depended on where you went and who you asked. She was a completely polarising figure - basically the heroine of 'the right' and the demon of 'the left' - authoritarian, ruthless, forthright and single-minded. Great if you agreed with what she did, your worst nightmare if not.

Sorry that her name brings bitter memories to mind and maybe heart.

Does this part of the country still suffer from what she did until now?

So her given nickname was typically right ''the Iron Lady''.She seems to be so devilish from what I got from your words.

To some, probably, but as I mentioned to Andy, so much depends on your perspective. I suppose my personal opinion more reflects her impact on the area than her overall place in history, and reading some of the news makes me realise how much anger there still is towards her around these parts. But I’m a little too young to remember it first hand or to have been directly affected by anything that went on at the time, so my views are garnered more from information passed down by older family members and whatnot. Hearing word of her passing made me think more about some of my uncles, and other north east miners and their families than anything else.

There's still a lot of unemployment, probably more than in most areas of the country, but we do still have some industry today. The Nissan car company and the IT sector are by far the biggest providers of jobs.

I didn't even know he had a Twitter account I looked at Szczesny's once where he posted pics from the Maldives with his girlfriend. Hmm... <googles Lewy's Twitter> You mean these photos?: https://twitter.com/...wski/media/grid by the way, to me he and his girlfriend are the classis example of 2 people in a relationship who look a lot like each other :|

That's right

That's the one, the pictures of him as Superman and playing Jenga on his own really made me laugh.

I can see what you mean about his girlfriend, their facial features look really similar in some of the photos I've seen. I hear she's a martial artist of some note too, which is pretty impressive. :jimmy:

And March/April are nine months after summer the only 'Birthday-related observation' that I have is that many top models seem to be from the first half of July.

Really? I didn't know that. If I was going to be a parent now, I'd be tempted to try and engineer a July birth, increasing the chances of my daughter growing up to become a top model and making me a ton of money.

Her economic reforms were bringing almost inhumane suffering to the poorest in society.

This makes me feel angry. Some people said her policies killed the working class.

I don't know if it was victimisation as such, but she pretty much worshipped individualism, privatisation and the free market, and often said that she didn't believe in 'society'. Basically, she represented the harshest face of the ruling class that we'd ever seen in Britain.

Aw, thanks Jennka! Joe's going to take me for a spin in the DeLorean later, you're welcome to join us.

I think I might buy myself a Grey's Sports Almanac in the future and then place a few bets when I get home. My memory's not what it once was, but I'm fairly certain that it worked out great in the movie.
