I thought I'd plop these here as a potential reference. I wrote these notes for peeps after I figured out the COH2 engine:

There are lots and lots of COH2 doctrines and they can get confusing. Half of them are not useful while the other half are. I personally hope to see more Soviet anti-tank doctrines released in the future as antitank (particularly tigers, elephants, and panthers) is their weak point.

Most effective COH2 Doctrines:

Soviets:

Guards Motor Coordination Tactics-My favorite all around Soviet doctrine until Armored Assault gets released- Gives you dual T-34/85 call in, Vehicle self-repair, 120mm mortar, Guards rifle antitank infantry, and marked vehicle.

Anti-Infantry Tactics- This doctrine fits well in the early game and attack as its low in CPs and you can use the recon plane, shock troops, KV-8, incendiary artillery barrage, and 'fear propaganda artillery' (an ability that forces German infantry to retreat) to clear the path of German infantry. It works well with Su-85 tank destroyers as it gets rid of Paks and panzershrecks. The recon plane helps you locate a clear path into your opponent's weak spots.

Terror Tactics Similar to Anti-Infantry but also includes the 155mm Howitzer along with fear propaganda, KV-8, and Il-2 bombing strike. No Recon plane. This is a DLC that I don't have.

Mechanized Support Tactics- The Soviet Antitank doctrine: antitank ambush, marked target, ISU-152 (long range antitank and antipersonnel weapon), IL support, and Guards infantry (armed with PTRS). It pretty much has all the Soviet antitank special abilities.

OstHeer:

Assault Support Doctrine-This is a strong and probably the most popular German doctrine. Selling points are Tiger tank, Opel Blitz, strafing run, and fragmentation bomb. Many consider this the best German doctrine.

The special parts: Tiger tank. The Opel blitz is a truck that parks in cap points for additional resources. A great ability. The Strafing run is one of the best air-ground attacks; The Axis aircraft repeatedly attack for a good 20 seconds or so and 'stun' the Soviet infantry & pin them all to the ground. This is very useful for keeping infantry away from an attacking armored group.

Spearhead Doctrine- This is another strong doctrine. It has 251 mortar carrier, smoke dischargers for all armor, tiger tank, fragmentation bomb, and aerial recon support. All the ability are quite strong.

Joint Operations Doctrine- The key strength of this doctrine is both 105mm howitzer, aerial recon, and Pak43 gun. The 75mm light artillery barrage is cheap and good at eliminating enemy infantry concentrations quickly. It's probably the most powerful defensive doctrine in the game.

Released, and then withdrawn for DLC release:

Armored Assault Tactics- It was included with the game at release but then deleted via patch. It was one of the best, and probably the best Soviet doctrine and it focused on enhancing armor. The key unique feature is the ability to produce T-34/85s rather than rely on an expensive 2 unit call-in.

Effective special situations doctrines:Not general purpose, but can be useful

Jaeger Armor Doctrine- It is the German mobile antitank doctrine. You get spotting scopes that double your view range, special antitank mines, Stuka bombing support, recon plane support and the Elefant tank destroyer. This is a good for a big match and open country.

Oddly enough, there is no Pak43 (which would make this doctrine tough in the defense if there is no Elefant)

Fortified Armor Doctrine- It gives you smoke dischargers for your tanks, the very quick Panzer IV command tank, and the Elefant tank destroyer. The command tank is probably the best recon vehicle for the tank destroyer if you're planning on using this tactic.

Festung Armor Doctrine- A fun doctrine. Selling points include smoke dischargers for tanks, Panzer IV command tank, Pak43 88mm antitank gun, and powerful railway artillery (3 salvos).

Shock Rifle Frontline Tactics- I initially considering this a mainline tactic but the IS-2 is not only overpriced but comes very late if at all in a match (IIRC, almost 20 cps). It gives you antitank ambush, KV-8 flamethrower tank, and IS-2.

etc..

There are also 4 doctrines that focus on enhancing Soviet and German artillery (2 that I don't remember the name) and Infantry (conscripts support, Jaeger Infantry) to its maximum extent. I don't find these to be effective due to the status of infantry in this game but they are 'interesting' to screw around with. Then there are a large bunch that are not useful, like storm doctrine or NKVD disruption tactics.

The elite infantry call-in are all Soviet and all very useful: Guards Rifle infantry, 120mm mortar crews, and Shock Troops.

The heavy armor call-in however, is overpriced (in comparison to their alternative, buying SU-85 (115 fuel) and Panthers (165 fuel) and underpowered for their exorbitant cost. The Tiger tank fares the best, but is still worth around 220 rather than 250 fuel. The Elefant is worth more around 200 fuel. The ISU-152 is worth 220 fuel rather than 290. The IS-2 is worth 180 fuel rather than 300.

medium armor dual call in- T-34/85 is 130 fuel each, which is far too much. It is worth 115 like the Panzer IV.

A very odd imbalance: Soviet artillery 155mm has 90 sec cooldown and fires only 6 shells and German 105mm has 25 second cooldown and fires about double.

Yea, ..like SS, I'm aware of the special nature of games (literally, you play and have fun, and then look at the time to see that two hours have passed and your hot bowl/jug has gone cold..).  I also feel that games give one some sort of 'adrenaline' rush so it makes it harder for me to sleep.  I lose sleep to play games so I delete steam and the game files after I'm done 'exploring'.   I've deleted steam many times already.  I just have too much to do at night unfortunately (like sleeping!)

Watch dogs looks interesting.   What are you looking forward to with it?

You don't want to know how much I spend on games the_horror.gif

There's a lot of upcoming games I'm looking forward to. Perhaps none more so than Watch Dogs - I posted a few gameplay/trailer videos here: http://www.bellazon.com/main/topic/46751-watch-dogs/.

The Witness is also one that I'm constantly checking in on with great interest. It looks utterly gorgeous from what they've shown so far, and is incredibly intriguing. It's made by Jonathan Blow, of Braid fame - who's a really interesting guy striving to make rather different and memorable gaming experiences. This is worth listening to if you've got 80 minutes or so to spare

And another of note, talking of DLC, is the upcoming Burial at Sea episodes for Bioshock Infinite, which takes Booker and Elizabeth into Rapture
Here's a trailer:

You know, that has great potential but the trailer doesn't reveal much.  I'm afraid that it may be a low budget piece of work that piggybacks with limited quality.  What do you know about it?

btw, did you do the 'last of us'?

I love sandbox games, provided they a) provide an interesting/immersive world and b) provide an interesting/fun toolset to play around with - be it things to see and do, or things to use within the world. Watch Dogs looks to have both covered pretty well. From what I've seen so far it looks to be a very detailed and believable world (not to mention gorgeous), to a level that I'm not sure has a rival - though I'm sure the upcoming GTA V will have a lot to say about that (GTA IV is pretty much the best example of one so far). The 'hacking' mechanic looks to be a lot of fun and will potentially open up a lot of new ways to interact with the environment and the people therein. It's still yet to be seen exactly what and how much you'll be able to do - but the potential is exciting. Beyond that they've been a bit tight-lipped on character/story elements, so I'm not really sure what it has to offer there yet.

I don't know much about it yet, but I have high hopes for it. I really don't think it's the sort of thing they're going to 'phone it in' with. I don't expect it to be very long but I do expect it to be given the time and attention it deserves. The franchise, and Rapture, are so fondly loved - not only by the fans but by Ken Levine and his team. I guess we'll see though

The Last of Us is still in my backlog.. I might start it soon though

Saints Row IV is pretty awesome.

You have to love all the little in-jokes and references, from the romance dynamics in Mass Effect, over an entire Matrix homage to 1950s styled sitcoms.

And that's just in a couple of hours of gameplay (I only started it yesterday).

Also love the fact that Kinzie has a bigger role in this one as she was my favorite gang member in Saints Row The Third.

^I'm a fair way into it now, loving it

It is actually genuinely funny too.. I love how they've found their own identity after starting as a fairly mediocre GTA clone (apparently - I still haven't played the first two).

Post a pic of your character?

I imported her from SR3 too, but they got rid of the Russian accent in 4, which I was a bit bummed about.

She's French now

I have always found her to be a very beautiful woman.

I have mentioned several times that dark-haired women with long, nice legs are my kryptonite.
