I've seen it noted many times that Freud, Marx, and Nietzsche were the most influential figures in europe during the first half of the 20th century. I myself have only read Marx (Das Kapital- volume 1). However, I haven't touched either Freud or Nietzsche. I have more interest in the latter, but after a casual glance at some of his books I couldn't muster myself the desire to read it.

I think that Das Kapital is an extraordinary book. But it's a deeply insightful but flawed work due to its age and emphasis. I would advise all managerial/economics/financially-literate people to read it. The reason I say this, is because it teaches concepts that are deeply useful, but unfortunately buried due to Marx's ill repute (unfairly, I am sure of it) due to the rise of communism. I found Marx's economics much weaker than his economic sociology, the latter of which I think is very useful for just about everybody. His critique of classical political economy still holds even now.

I would never guess. I never really studied anything from Marx (although my parents had to graduate from Marxism) - your statement has captured my attention for Marx. Although Nietzsche is in my wish list for a longer time (especially after I read some of the Freud´s work) - I would love to know more about him

Time is running, as always. Oh hell.

Of course I will I already have some, but need to upload them at home as soon as I have some free time. Lots of kittens again You would like to have one?

LOL I am more of a dog person but thanks for offering

I can’t remember whether or not you had cats. I think you have a dig or am I incorrect?

I hope you´ll feel better soon that reminds of my allergy - it causes me problems from time to time, pretty annoying as well. I´m deaf on my left ear since I was little, and the allergy causes not only constant smirking and sniffling and tons of napkins used during winter, but also an increased preasure in my right ear, which is nothing pleasant at all. Sometimes it even hurts

I have allergies too. Seasonal allergies. It was something I developed later in life.

With all these chemicals, preservatives, genetically modified foods and etc, it is tough not to develop some type of allergy. I have a family friend who's son has an egg allergy but is able to eat organic eggs that has no antibiotics, synthetic hormones, etc.

Yeah, so little time What I don´t like about these study guides is, exactly like you said, the fact that they do not provide the deeper insight to the core of the whole issue that´s why I decided to just learn on the different subjects alone, from well specified books (not easy to find though).

I think I´m buying that book and see later

Have you tried looking for rare books online? I get most of my book via the internet.

Glad you decided to buy the biology book. Let me know you thoughts on it

How did Freud feel about females? So far I have read 3 of his books but did not notice anything evident there were two cases where he cured women and he seemed to treat them just like he treated men but I will pay more attention in the next books

Refer to Carm’s post

He also slept his “patients”. Speaking of people sleeping together, have you read stuff about Marquis de Sade or Alfred Kinsey?

I have been taking Spanish classes for four years and just need to take a rest for now and learn alone. I was never a talkative person, not even in classes I´m more writing-oriented but alcohol always opens my mouth lol, when I´m drunk I speak like native one

You must be pretty fluent in Spanish then. I only yook 3 years in high school. I can understand more than I can speak or write

When I was living with my parents we had a dog, then when I was living with my fl in his brothers´ flat, we had a dog, but then we moved alone to a one-room flat and since there is no place for a dog, nor we have a time for it. We´re always away for weekends. Since we started going on the cottage, I´ve fallen in love with cats immensely

I have allergies too. Seasonal allergies. It was something I developed later in life.

This world is sick but one thing is great about my allergy - I can´t use make up or any other such things as mascara or perfume. It simplified my life and, well, I save a lot of money and time which I can dedicate to more important things (like buying a chainsaw lol)

Yes, and they are mostly all in English which is not a bad thing, but I don´t feel THAT fluent yet to read on microbiology or maths in English. Maybe later

I will! But the buying is postponed for now - I have no time to read it and have to save money for cottage. First thing is to learn my fl English (he´s going to undertake an interview for work in English), then I have to get through like 260 short stories (I´m one of the judges of one literary competition in Slovakia) THEN I just received a book from the beloved Mel "A Beautiful Mind" which I just can´t wait to read and before that I have to finish that one on black holes. Damn it.

De Sade is a well known name, but I was never interested in him - who is the other one?

And do you still practice?

I´m very shy when it comes to speaking in Spanish. I rather write (I love writing lol) and there are still too many flaws I need to work on

Marx is best read (and I read it in this manner) after one understands the economy in which they live in. I read it after I worked in finance for a few years and developed my own understanding of the economy. Otherwise, it's easy to get confused as Marx speaks from a much earlier time period, and during the first age of globalization. Very thought-provoking text for sure.

Pink recommends that you read a 'Dummies' guide and I had an similar idea along those lines. It is very common for seasoned US or UK professors to release books for the general audience and to expand their influence

Keeping that reality in mind, the books that they release are often quite good, and very user-friendly. A first time reader into a particular subject could get a high quality intro in a short period of reading time. . These books are often derived from courses that they teach, So there's an edge in there- they've taught the subject quite a lot and know the best way to do it. They extract the important information and the framework while not bogging the reader down with details.

I have found that the key to understanding a subject is to 1. understand the general environment first in its entirety 2. understand major concepts 3. Then finally, get into the details. My uncle, who is a polymath doctor that practices internal medicine, often told me this. I found it to be true. Doing #1 would take a few readings of 'basic' type books. After a base a built, then one can precede with understanding the big ideas and concepts better. After this is mastered, #3- the 'devil's in the details' so to speak becomes much easier and far less time consuming.

That sounds pretty logical. Although I´ve always liked the detailed study better - I just feel like missing all the important "whys" in a generally oriented books. But that might of course depend on the writer as well. It´s exhausting, but it feels nice

But I think you´re right there on the 3 steps. For now, all the beloved reading is neglected - I have to teach fl English and have 260 short amateur stories to read till the end of August
